Re: The Dear Loser comes into his own. (North Korea)
I woke up in a cold sweat last night after dreaming that we declared war with NK. Trump has having a press conference and after his usual dumb comments, he turned the podium to Mike Pence who somehow had the authority to declare war. I remember waking up and about to wake my wife to tell her to pack up and that we need to head east away from CA as we're within range of their nukes. Thankfully I woke up out of the fog and realized it was a dream.

North Korea preparing long-range missile test: RIA cites Russian lawmaker
At least the market is bullish on America, so that's good. Right?North Korea is preparing to test a long-range missile which it believes can reach the west coast of the United States, a Russian lawmaker just returned from a visit to Pyongyang was quoted as saying on Friday.
Anton Morozov, a member of the Russian lower house of parliament’s international affairs committee, and two other Russian lawmakers visited Pyongyang on Oct. 2-6, Russia’s RIA news agency reported.
“They are preparing for new tests of a long-range missile. They even gave us mathematical calculations that they believe prove that their missile can hit the west coast of the United States,” RIA quoted Morozov as saying.
“As far as we understand, they intend to launch one more long-range missile in the near future. And in general, their mood is rather belligerent.”
Tensions have risen in recent weeks over North Korea’s nuclear weapons and missile programs as Pyongyang has test-fired several missiles and conducted what it said was a test explosion of a hydrogen bomb as it advances toward its goal of developing a nuclear-tipped missile capable of hitting the U.S. mainland.
Morozov’s comments drove up the price of U.S. Treasury bonds, as investors, worried about the prospect of new North Korean missile tests, moved into assets the market views as a safe haven in times of uncertainty.

North Korean hackers stole U.S. and South Korean wartime plans, Seoul lawmaker says
No worries, I'm sure that Trump has a new secret plan that is far better than the old not-so-secret plans.North Korean hackers stole a huge trove of classified U.S. and South Korean military documents last year, including a plan to “decapitate” the leadership in Pyongyang in the event of war, a lawmaker in Seoul said Tuesday.
The revelations, if substantiated, come at a time of heightened tensions over North Korea, with President Trump most recently saying that “only one thing will work” when it comes to Pyongyang, hinting at military action.
The defense minister in Japan, a close military ally of the United States, said Tuesday that Trump might take such action against North Korea as soon as next month.
“I think President Trump will judge in the middle of November how effective pressure and other efforts have been,” Itsunori Onodera told reporters in Tokyo. “If there have been no changes from North Korea, it’s possible that the U.S. will take severe measures.”
In Seoul, Rhee Cheol-hee, a lawmaker in the ruling Democratic Party and a member of the parliamentary national defense committee, said that North Korean hackers broke into the Defense Integrated Data Center in September last year to steal secret files, including American and South Korean “operational plans” for wartime action. The data center is the main headquarters of South Korea’s defense network.
According to Rhee, the stolen documents included OPLAN 5015, the plan drafted two years ago for dealing with full-blown war with North Korea and said to include procedures to “decapitate” the North Korean leadership. He said the cache also included OPLAN 3100, outlining the military response to infiltration by North Korean commandos or another local provocation, as well as a contingency plan in case of a sudden change in North Korea.

China blocks access to 'sacred' mountain near North Korea
NK Nukes to trigger a volcano?Donga Ilbo reported Thursday that Chinese authorities have temporarily closed parts of the national park in northeastern Jilin Province amid rising fears in the region about radioactive contamination, following North Korea's sixth nuclear test on Sept. 3.
China has limited access to a nature reserve on its border with North Korea after mysterious seismic shakes at the rogue nation's nuclear test site were detected less than 10 minutes after it launched a missile earlier this month.
Beijing reportedly closed the site over fears that underground detonations by the North Koreans at a facility near Punggye-ri could lead to rockslides and even trigger an eruption of the active volcano Mount Paektu, which is sacred to North Korea and located right on the border between the two countries.
The notices from Chinese authorities, restricting access to the Changbaishan National Nature Reserve, were posted on China’s state-regulated analog to Twitter Weibo, South Korea’s Donga Ilbo newspaper reported Thursday. It covers a radius of around 70 miles from the Punggye-ri test site.

Securing North Korean nuclear sites would require a ground invasion, Pentagon says
The only way to locate and secure all of North Korea’s nuclear weapons sites “with complete certainty” is through an invasion of ground forces, and in the event of conflict, Pyongyang could use biological and chemical weapons, the Pentagon told lawmakers in a new, blunt assessment of what war on the Korean Peninsula might look like.
The Pentagon, in a letter to lawmakers, said that a full discussion of U.S. capabilities to “counter North Korea’s ability to respond with a nuclear weapon and to eliminate North Korea’s nuclear weapons located in deeply buried, underground facilities” is best suited for a classified briefing.
The letter also said that Pentagon leaders “assess that North Korea may consider the use of biological weapons” and that the country “has a long-standing chemical weapons program with the capability to produce nerve, blister, blood and choking agents.”
The Pentagon repeated that a detailed discussion of how the United States would respond to the threat could not be discussed in public.

Re: The Dear Loser comes into his own. (North Korea)
And do we want to?
North Korea's nuclear test site in Kilju, North Hamgyong Province is turning into a wasteland after six underground nuclear tests, according to witness accounts.
North Koreans who defected from the region said 80 percent of trees that are planted die, underground wells have run dry and babies are being born with defects.
The Research Association of Vision of North Korea, which includes North Korean defectors, interviewed 21 defectors who used to live in Kilju in the last couple of years.
...
Other defectors said local specialties like trout and pine mushrooms have disappeared from the region. "Trout and pine mushrooms were sent to senior party officials as gifts in the 1980s, but they disappeared after the first nuclear test in 2006," one said.
...
Officials are trying hard to prevent accounts from inside Kilju spreading to other parts of the North. One said, "People who boarded trains to the border with samples of soil, water and leaves from Kilju county were arrested and sent to prison camps."
The Unification Ministry here has been conducting radioactive contamination tests of 30 North Korean defectors from Kilju since last month.

They're spelling Kaiju all wrong in that article. It's the Kaiju Region. It's supposed to be radioactive.

North Korean defector survives absurdly dangerous sprint to South Korea
A North Korean soldier defected to the South on Monday by surviving an absurdly dangerous sprint across one of the most heavily militarized borders in the world.
He was shot twice by North Korean troops as he ran but survived and was taken to a South Korean hospital, according to South Korean officials.
The escape happened in the village of Panmunjom, the only place within the Demilitarized Zone where soldiers from both sides stare each other down over a distance of several yards.
On Monday, at 3:31 p.m. local time, the North Korean soldier abandoned his guard post and simply ran for it.

Hmm, I read he was being kept live through respirator, was unconx and had 4 or 5 bullets removed so far with 2 more still in there. I don't think he's out of the woods. Pretty sure the South Korean hospital will be doing EVERYTHING they can to have him pull through.Moliere wrote: ↑Tue Nov 14, 2017 2:46 pm North Korean defector survives absurdly dangerous sprint to South Korea

I read that, in addition to the bullet wounds, the defector is being treated for multiple intestinal parasites.

The entire population of North Korea faces compulsory military service, currently 10 years for men and 7 years for women. There just isn't going to be enough "good" stuff to go around for the entire military, although I don't doubt that there are elite units that receive special privileges.
The BBC recently ran an article about conditions for females in the Nork army. Spoiler: it isn't pretty.

CNN
North Korea has replaced nearly all of the soldiers along the border where one of their former comrades defected, a South Korean lawmaker said Friday.
The change comes as the North Korean People's Army sought to prevent other soldiers from defecting by planting trees and apparently digging a trench at a section of the demilitarized zone, according to the chargé d'affaires at the US Embassy in Seoul.
Marc Knapper, the highest-ranking official at the US Embassy, tweeted a photo this week showing North Korean soldiers supervising what appears to be the planting of two trees and the digging of a trench where the North Korean soldier dashed across the border November 13.

Re: The Dear Loser comes into his own. (North Korea)
I was just thinking that we're overdue for another one.
North Korea has fired a ballistic missile, South Korean media say, quoting military officials.
The Pentagon said it was still assessing the "probable" launch, which took place at approximately 03:30 local time (18:30 GMT).
South Korean news agency Yonhap reported that the missile flew eastward from Pyongsong, South Pyongan province.
It is not clear how far it went or whether it flew over Japan as other missiles did earlier this year.
North Korea has test fired several other missiles this year, including its first intercontinental ballistic missiles, as tensions increase over its nuclear programme.
South Korean and US authorities are working together to analyse the latest missile's trajectory, according to a statement from South Korean military chiefs. It is unclear what range it had.

North Korea tests suspected ICBM, splashes down near Japan
The South Korean military said the missile, fired on a steep trajectory, reached an altitude of around 4,500 km (2,800 miles) and flew 960 km (600 miles) before landing in Japan’s exclusive economic zone.
“It went higher frankly than any previous shot they’ve taken, a research and development effort on their part to continue building ballistic missiles that can threaten everywhere in the world, basically,” U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told reporters at the White House.
Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe spoke by phone and agreed to boost deterrence capability against North Korea, Yasutoshi Nishimura, deputy chief cabinet secretary, told reporters in Tokyo.
“It is a situation that we will handle,” Trump told reporters at the White House, speaking about the latest test.
Trump, who was briefed on the missile while it was in flight, said it did not change his administration’s approach to North Korea, which has included new curbs to hurt trade between China and North Korea.
Japanese officials said the missile flew for 53 minutes and broke up before landing in Japan’s exclusive economic zone. Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera said it was judged to be ICBM class given its lofted trajectory.
“If these numbers are correct, then if flown on a standard trajectory rather than this lofted trajectory, this missile would have a range of more than 13,000 km (8,100 miles) ... Such a missile would have more than enough range to reach Washington, D.C., and in fact any part of the continental United States,” the U.S.-based Union of Concerned Scientists said.
However, it was unclear how heavy a payload the missile was carrying, and it was uncertain if it could carry a large nuclear warhead that far, the nonprofit science advocacy group added.

That's just a little terrifying. Senator Lindsey Graham was throwing around talk of war after this launch. I don't know of any good options when it comes to North Korea, but war can't be the best option on the table.Max Peck wrote: ↑Tue Nov 28, 2017 8:25 pm“If these numbers are correct, then if flown on a standard trajectory rather than this lofted trajectory, this missile would have a range of more than 13,000 km (8,100 miles) ... I think a good rule of thumb would be that the governing body welcomes aid. How's Syria working out so far?
What's your plan? Hold the NK government at gunpoint while you distribute food and water?
I mean, does Puerto Rico even have power yet? I appreciate that you want to save the world, but your not even doing a bang up job at home.
Honestly, what's your plan? What makes NK special? What, specifically, is the end game of military conflict with NK? You've JUST HAD numerous military actions with much smaller, less well armed and organized countries. Are you happy with the results in Afghanistan and Iraq? Is that how you anticipate NK will go?
Your own government is currently doing untold damage to your way of life, but you have time to pick and choose other countries that should be beaten into submission?
Is it that Americans don't learn lessons?

Someone needs to go watch the Eddie Izzard skit on murdering fuckheads again.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

If we're taking geopolitical advice from a comedian, Eddy also said you can't hold Eastern Europe/Asia.

It's interesting that you only see 2 possibilities, both of which are war.
You've already fought NK in a war. How'd that go? Why do you feel it would go better this time?

We say we won't allow him to have nuclear missiles capable of striking us and he says he will make them no matter what we do to stop him.
What else could happen?

The Dear Loser comes into his own. (North Korea)
Because ass kicking wars are part of MAGA. WHOSE ass has been kicked in previous similar crusades is up for debate.
