Apple encouraged phone upgrades...

Post by Montag »

Surprised there hasn't been a thread on this yet. I have looked for one. Apple now has 5 class action suits against it for throttling version 6 and version 7 iPhones for the "benefit" of the customer due to degraded battery performance without informed consent. At best, extremely boneheaded thing to do. I am leaning towards criminal. My sister in law has a seven and it does appear to have degraded performance. My brother said this may prompt them to go Android.

On the one hand, if doing this prevents random shut downs because the battery craps out after a year or two, then I guess it's good that it helps you limp along longer. On the other hand, it seems pretty crappy that they don't let you replace the battery, and then degrade performance because of a gradually failing battery that you can't replace.
I can't imagine, even at my most inebriated, hearing a bouncer offering me an hour with a stripper for only $1,400 and thinking That sounds like a reasonable idea.-Two Sheds

When I upgraded our two 6's to iOS 11, I would say performance dropped by half. Almost unusable. By the time I figured out what was going on, they had already pulled the ability to go back to iOS10 (meaning if you reset, it goes back to whatever it shipped with).

Read a few articles on the throttling issue related to battery, downloaded the free app to check mine, and yep, my battery was extremely "tired". Spent $23 for a replacement kit (including new battery and all needed tools) and now my speed is back where it was before I "upgraded".

Lesson learned about upgrading to the latest iOS willy nilly, especially on old models.

iPhones have always been designed as disposable devices. They don't want people to easily fix or upgrade elements - just toss it and buy a new one. None of this surprises me.
My brother said this may prompt them to go Android
I'd love to hear how that works out, particularly if he's using multiple Apple products in his home.

He will still use the Ipads.

I believe a battery replacement option is available at Istores for about $100. A much cheaper option than a $1000 X model. The sleeze is not presenting the full story to the customer.

Yeah, the only issues I have with this are that:
1. They absolutely should have stated more clearly what was going on.
2. They should have added an option in settings for it (which is likely not going to happen)

Personally, i'd rather have the phone slow down than just have really bad battery life. I had several samsungs that I got rid of because I could no longer make it through a full work day (not even a full day) with them that weren't even 2 years old. Also, there are many complaints of the same thing on Android devices as well. Well, at least the ones that ever actually get an update.

Do you have a link for that? I just upgraded to the X but I'd like to swap out the battery on my old 6s and give it to my mom.

Through Apple care new batteries are around $86 shipped. Third party they're closer to $25, but you install them and you void your warranty.

Or, you know, $12.

When I upgraded my 6+ to iOS 11, I started getting all sorts of application crashes. I don’t recall it slowing down much but maybe my battery wasn’t tired enough to slow down, but was tired enough to show what happens without the adjustment?

Either way, they got what they wanted and I have an iPhone X now

Does an iohi5really use a 1700mAh battery? Theta pretty impressive if they can go all day with that small of a battery.

The Verge
Apple just published a letter to customers apologizing for the “misunderstanding” around older iPhones being slowed down, following its recent admission that it was, in fact, slowing down older phones in order to compensate for degrading batteries. “We know that some of you feel Apple has let you down,” says the company. “We apologize.”

Apple says in its letter that batteries are “consumable components,” and is offering anyone with an iPhone 6 or later a battery replacement for $29 starting in late January through December 2018 — a discount of $50 from the usual replacement cost. Apple’s also promising to add features to iOS that provide more information about the battery health in early 2018, so that users are aware of when their batteries are no longer capable of supporting maximum phone performance.

Apple hasn't been the anti corporate they started out as in many many many years. The way they do people and the prices they charge and the way they did me I almost wish they'd burn to the ground...almost. Wish they would just go away though for the most part. The only thing I like them for a little bit is their ancient history.

If this truly is the case then end user replaceable batteries should be a design priority and I hope this is hammered home in the law suits. This event may benefit consumers in the long run.

Just replaced mine and wife’s. Took about 20 min (each).

I was about to add “but I guess you mean like a laptop battery “ and remembered that my last 2 work laptops (Dell) did not have easily replaceable batteries (ie you couldn’t just slide a button and remove like on older models).

So nothing about the battery issues with Ipads? My Air 2 battery life/performance was decimated by these latest updates. It's gotten marginally better with the last few patches (even though they blamed youtueb app) and they did fix the not charging issue (1 month later after denying it was their fault)but it's still at least 50% worse than it was before the lovely 11. updates. But hey I got Apple Pay now! It was so bad at one point as to be basically useless without being plugged in. 1% of battery life per 1 minute of light-moderate use. Again, better now but a major noticeable hit in performance. What really pisses me off is the complete denial on Apple that it was anything they had done. I blew $50 on new chargers and cables because they insisted this was the issue while they were actively working on a patch to fix it. I at least crossed the Ipad Pro off my Christams list :)

9 to 5 Mac
Apple had already said that a future iOS update will give users more insight into the state of their battery. In an interview with ABC News, Tim Cook was asked for his take on Apple slowing down iPhones with degraded batteries. He revealed that the developer beta including these features will be released next month, with a public release to follow after.

Moreover, he says that this forthcoming update will give users the option to disable the throttling to maintain normal CPU performance, but will be at risk of unexpected shutdowns.

In its public apology letter on Apple.com regarding the iPhone slowdown debacle, Apple described the update in the following way:
Early in 2018, we will issue an iOS software update with new features that give users more visibility into the health of their iPhone’s battery, so they can see for themselves if its condition is affecting performance.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Had my battery replaced over the weekend for $30 and 3.5 years of pocket lint fished out of the charging port so I could actually charge it without resorting to old rabbit-ear tricks with the cable.

Enjoy your new car! Remember in 5 years it will not go above 25 mph any longer and will use twice as much gas. But we're thinking of you so if you bring it back we'll sell you a new one.

Last time I liked Apple was the early 80s because in Jr High math class we played DnD on their Apple II c or or E i think.

Trough the rest of the 80s I was indifferent to them. In the 90s I didn't care about them because I was a big gamer and they didn't game and what they claimed was gaming made me laugh at them.

In the mid 00s I think it was I got my wife a iPod 3rd Gen. She loved music on players like that. The battery lasted about a year I think it was before it failed to hold a charge and they would do nothing.

Over time I started seeing where they would either refuse to fix stuff or make things so others couldn't fix them. And they stuff broke a LOT....especially batteries.

But in the 2010s when I needed a new router I went with an Apple Airport. Supposedly the best and easiest router out there. I got the PC version. On the box it even states PC. But nope. When I got it it refused to work. I called Apple and they outright told me straight up Id need a Apple iPhone to get it up and running. I kindly said fuck off..I mean no thank. Sold the router to someone on OO and got a working Asus one.

Since that day I have HATED Apple with a passion and would hope they crash and burn for good if not for the competition they provide and keep PC stuff cheaper.

It's time to upgrade my faithful iPhone 6. I've been trying to schedule a shopping appointment with an Apple specialist via the website. Previously they only let you book 3 days in advance. So today I checked in, hoping to be able to schedule a weekend appointment, and at some point between Sunday and today, they increased it to 5 days in advance.

So now all the weekend appointments are booked and the next available appointments are next Monday. I said, "screw this" and ordered my iPhone 12 pro max via the ATT store. Now it's being delivered and I face the prospect of doing the upgrade and data transfer myself.

I've never done this before but I think it's as easy as backing up my old phone to iCloud and restoring the backup on my new phone. Has anyone else done their own iPhone upgrade and are there important steps that I should not miss?

I don’t remember it being difficult at all. It felt like I turned the new phone on, logged in to my account, and it was done. But it’s been awhile since I’ve done it.

Make sure you back up your phone before you start the transfer.

It is pretty much that easy although I don’t know if moving from a 6 to a 12 will impact the process, be sure to research a bit.

A few notes from my past experiences:
- if you use any 2fa Authenticator apps, they usually don’t back up their configs so you may have to reconfigure them after upgrade, having your old phone available during this makes it much easier if for nothing more than remembering which accounts to configure

- for all that is holy, do NOT, reset to factory on your old phone until well after you’ve ensured all is well and good on the new one. This happened to a friend of mine, he reset the old phone before going through the entire restore from backup process, and his backup to iCloud hadn’t actually worked. Not a fun few days for him.

Wow 6 to 12 is going to be a major leap, hope you like the new hardware.

I would recommend not relying solely on the iCloud backup. Do a backup to a computer as well just to be safe. I don't know if you are using the latest OS or not (14.x); if so it should be seamless either way. But if you are using an older version it may be better to do it the old fashioned way.

Truth be told I was looking to upgrade last year but then heard rumblings about how the 2020 model would be a big leap, so I held out; even through times where my iPhone would take over a minute to load OO :). For cases like that though, I gritted my teeth, closed my phone, and waited until I could access my home PC.

So the watch face on my Apple Series 0 watch fell out while I was running. I tried to pop it back in but it wouldn't stay. I checked online and turns out it could be due to a swollen battery. The charge to replace it is almost as much as getting a new watch. So I was planning on getting the Apple Watch SE, which Amazon is offering at $230 as a pre-Black Friday sale.

The problem is I need to pair the watch with at least an iPhone 6s and my iPhone 12 pro max isn't arriving until the first week of December. Should I just buy the watch now and wait until I get the phone to pair it?

Yeah, I was debating doing that as well, but see above for my frustration with trying to schedule an Apple store appointment during the weekend. Plus, I was reading on the internet and it looks like if the watch is out of warranty then it's a toss-up as to whether the store will replace it for free or charge you $79 to replace the battery.

If I'm being honest I do want a new watch to go with the new phone :). And on that note I got a surprise email today. Apparently, my iPhone is being shipped and is scheduled to arrive tomorrow; which is when my watch is also due to arrive!

My phone and watch arrived yesterday. Phone upgrade was a breeze. I just activated the new phone by following the included directions, which had me going to att’s website. Then the new phone told me to take a picture of this glowing particle blob on the old phone. This initiated a data transfer from old to new which took about 20 mins. Then new phone was ready to go.

Looks like all my data and history are intact.

Then it was on to the watch. Setup was also a breeze there. Just had to tell the phone that it was a new watch, not a re-pair of the old one.

The phone is massive and will take some time to get used to. Also the UI has changed a bit from the iphone6. I had to lookup how to get to the setup shortcuts (pull down from upper right corner of screen). All the apps are super responsive now though and my news sites load up very quickly.

The watch by contrast is smaller than the series 0, which I like. It feels more like a watch instead of some big piece of gear on my wrist.

One snag is that I did my phone protecting procedure wrong. I put the phone in the Speck protective case before I put the screen protection film on. The screen protector kit has a hard plastic shell that helps guide you in proper placement of the film but it’s meant to go on a naked phone and now I can’t get the phone out of the case :/. I’ll save that step for later I guess.

Just found out that Apple is offering 3 free months of Apple Arcade and a year of free AppleTV for purchasers of a new phone. Will check that out.

Ironically the times when I would be playing mobile games are almost non-existent given COVID and the fact that I’m working from home.

Peel/push back the corner of the case where the camera is on the back (upper-right when looking at the face of the phone). The case is slightly more giving in that corner due to the hole in the back. Warming it with a hair dryer can help temporarily soften it as well. I'd get the screen protected right away. For all their claims of "super duper impervious gorilla glass!!! /flex" I've found that my iPhones will pick up very faint scratches just going in and out of my pocket during the day.

Thanks for the tip. Screen is now protected
