I have not seen it in the articles I have read, but which nation gets the automatic entry into World Cup 2026?

It hasn’t been determined yet. FIFA says that it is up to CONCACAF to decide.

I heard Trump is threating to tear up the agreement unless we renegotiate and give the US more games.

Don't want to spoil anything for those who might have it on dvr but SPA v POR was friggin great. Too bad more soccer games aren't like that one; America would be a whole lot more interested in the sport if they were.

Oh, I'm spoiling it! Ronaldo, Ronaldo, Ronaldo!

What a free kick to cap off an amazing day! Spain looked absolutely broken in the last couple of minutes of stoppage, despite the result. For Team Chaos, that could be it for them despite how well they played until then.

I really like Messi and preferred him over Renaldo....

But Renaldo doesn't miss in situations like these.

Thank god for those "90' in 90" highlight packages that Fox Soccer puts together. I don't have either the time or patience to sit through many games, and those are perfect to get caught up.

Crazy stat they brought up on the Iceland/Argentina game. Argentina has as many registered soccer players as Iceland has in their total population.

Finally had a chance to watch a game, Mexico v Germany was fantastic. Germany utterly dominated the game, but simply could not find the net.

Fun game!

Certainly did not see that result coming. Mexico looked bad coming into the WC, but they pulled off the upset and played a perfect game plan. Should of won by more with all the 2 v 1 and 3 v 1 counters they had.

This article says it won't be decided till next year. Should not matter anyways since FIFA is expanding the number of nations invited to the WC. Mexico and the USA should qualify through competition, so that leaves Canada. Or they might not give out any automatic bids. Probably comes down to who puts the biggest bribe in.

I know GER dominated time of possession, number of shots, passing accuracy etc. All the measurables but I really felt like MEX defense was pretty terrific. Of all of the shots GER had, and there were a lot, it really seemed like the Mexicans were able to funnel those shots thru specific lanes to where their keeper was perfectly positioned. Not something we usually see out of that team but it was impressive. Now I do think they played with fire and got lucky as well. GER did not have anything approaching an above average game let alone a special one and I feel like on balance if you give Germany that kind of possession and chances you're not gonna win. I know a bunch of guys at work that are gonna be bouncing on clouds for the next week (and not so subtlety reminding me the US isn't there 🤬).

England!!!! Thank goodness for Harry Kane. He saved their bacon in a game they should have run away with. So many missed opportunities and failures to finish. Still, 3 points is 3 points. :D

I was laughing at my buddy, who has suddenly decided he is a soccer expert and is laying bets left and right this WC, when he told me he'd bet the under on this game that ENG should've had 5 goals in the first 20 minutes(the under was 2  ).

On a different note, soccer officiating is absolutely maddening. While I didnt disagree with the call vs ENG on the PK, I wouldnt have argued if the ref had just swallowed his whistle there. But OK, he called it...fair enough. But then how do you NOT call the 2 flagrant body slams of Kane in the box on 2 separate corner kicks???

I would have thought this would be the Aussies...
Around 7,000 Sweden fans were in Nizhny Novgorod to celebrate the country's first World Cup win in 12 years on Monday, and supporters apparently enjoyed the festivities so much that the centre of the western Russian city ran out of beer.

Sweden got off to a dream start by winning their first game of the 2018 World Cup 1-0 against South Korea, thanks to a penalty from captain Andreas Granqvist, meaning they matched Mexico at the top of Group F with three points.

So happy were the Swedes that the supporters who travelled for the game managed to drink up most of the beer in the city centre before a ball had even been kicked, according to reports.

Top scorer: Own goal
The own goal has been utterly dominant so far in this World Cup. Five own goals as we continue through the second matches of pools already total the 2014 number for the tournament, and there may be more to come.

We're now just one goal away from the record for most own goals. In 1998, players found their own net six times, all in the group stage. In fact, of the 46 own goals in World Cup history, 36 have been in the group stages, and only two have occurred past group stages since 1982.
...
June 15: Aziz Bouhaddouz, Morocco (90+5')
The first own goal, off Morocco's Aziz Bouhaddouz, may have been the toughest of the tournament. It came five minutes into stoppage time for the second half, and it ultimately gave Iran a 1-0 win in its opening match.

June 16: Aziz Behich, Australia (81')
Another late goal that ultimately ended up being the difference, this goal was retroactively taken from France's Paul Pogba and "awarded" to Australia's Aziz Behich. The goal gave France a 2-1 win over Australia late.

June 16: Oghenekaro Etebo, Nigeria (32')
The second own goal of the day gave Croatia a 1-0 win over Nigeria. A pretty header by Mario Mandzukic careened off of Oghenekaro Etebo and into the net in the first half. The score would ultimately stand in a tough loss for Nigeria.

June 19: Thiago Cionek, Poland (37')
Another wildly unlikely goal, this one looked more like a hockey deflection. After a screamer off the foot of Idrissa Gana hit Thiago Cionek of Poland, it sneaked in past the Polish keeper to put Senegal up 1-0. While that goal didn't end up being the game-winner, Senegal did go on to win 2-1.

June 19: Ahmed Fathi, Egypt (47')
Another own goal to open the scoring, Fathi tried to slide to break up a weird bouncer. However, the ball took a weird angle, and ended up in the Egyptian net to put Russia up 1-0, a lead it would later open up to 3-0. A Mohamed Salah penalty set the final at 3-1, Russia.

This Tunisia keeper has made some poor choices. Belgium has been sick on the attack though, not taking anything away from them.

So...do we believe in Argentina now or what?? I honestly don't know. I feel like that was a better game from them today and yet...they were extremely fortunate to escape. And now France? I dunno about that...but a possible Ronaldo v Messi match-up looming is awesome.

Survive and advance.

I'm not sold on them, but they do seem like a side with the potential to flip the switch at any moment, so who knows.

Argentina's defense is just not that good. Most of that is on the coach, he put the team together. Not sure how far they can get.

ESPN had a stat that Germany had the most shots of anyone in the tourney, but only came away with two goals. 26 shots today, and only 4 on goal.
Sounds like someone needs some serious finishing practice.

Another interesting stat. Of the last 5 World Cup winners, 4 of them failed to get past the group stage in the following tournament.

France, Italy, Spain, and now Germany? If so, there's a geographic connection there. It also, then, looks like Russia is next to win and then flop.

A friend if mine is a huge Germany soccer fan. He's Mexican by ancestry but was born on a USAF base in Germany and grew up watching German football. He just sent out a text telling everyone that he is NOT consoled by Mexico advancing. I guess because everyone was consoling him with Mexico advancing. I love World Cup.

I do not think Argentina will get past France. France has not looked great, but Argentina does not look like a team operating on the same page.
