Another dev journal out today!

What does the "Freedom to Fail" philosophy mean? We don't force you to follow a linear path in Star Control: Origins and you're free to do crazy stuff - you're just not free from consequences. ;)

Still looking forward to this more and more. I think I can get past the planets pretty quickly once I start playing.

But have you guys considered getting the Starflight IP and doing it a good turn as well? the way you scanned, landed on, and mined planets in that game on the Sega Genesis is still my most favorite way to mine minerals in a space game.

Theres some mineral scanning and mining in this video below. You start wit ha low level scanner but as you make money you can upgrade it to find more abundant mineral deposits and increase your cargo hold too.

No need for that. Starflight 3: Universe (made by the original developer) is on the way.

Hey Island Dog, is there any update on bringing folks into the Not-fleet battles Beta? I just realized I purchased the Founders Edition almost two years ago, and was curious. Thanks!

Is the beta just for pre orders? I hate that type beta but I see why you do it a little bit. keeps it small and to the ones who want it the most.

The Fleet Battles beta is available to anyone who pre-orders. The beta for the main part of the game is private and letting in select players who are interested. :)

Wait...you mean the voice of our ship and the character we see if we see ourselves interacting with aliens is a female? We are forced to play a girl character?

If humans can master the genome and cloning, men become obsolete... which kind of makes good sense, from an evolutionary standpoint. Men tend to be more destructive and power-mad. If you want to build a cooperative, you need lots of people willing to cooperate with less ego.

I guess I missed this somewhere... the ship to ship combat, is it player controlled button mashing? I'm too old and slow for that. I'm happy with how combat works in GalCiv3 and I might be able to handle some timed player input, but fast paced button banging is going to be too much I'm afraid.

There was plenty of button mashing in SC 2... and I don't think it was really that difficult, but it was also 20+ years ago. Heck, that was with a joystick too--a modern controller would have been a breeze.

Can't wait for this one though.

If there's a demo I'll see if combat is fun or frustrating. Do companies even make demos anymore?

As I recall, Star Control 1 and 2 had a very simple, top-down system where you'd fight other ships one on one (the less said about SC3's system the better). It was more or less rock-paper-scissors, except with twenty varieties of each. You could also turn control over to the bot, but it would almost always lose.

About 90% of the time, I just went for the Spathi Eluder with its B.U.T.T. missiles. With the exception of faster craft, the Eluder could basically kite anything and win most of the time. Had to weave sometimes, especially vs the Kohr-Ah ships. Special cases included Arilou vs Mycon, and Pkunk vs final boss. Utwig Jugger was pretty good too, but I could never time the shield right. Earthling Cruiser was ok vs Druuge as I recall. And ZoqFotPik vs... absolutely nothing ever. Nothing says "winner" like melee-range weapons, slow speed, weak hull and no active defenses.

Eventually, you could upgrade your flagship to the point where it would wipe the floor with anything you fought, skill or no skill.

I forgot the whole point of this rant, which is that combat wasn't *that* twitchy. You needed two buttons and the arrow keys (some ships did special stuff when you pressed both buttons together). Hopefully the new incarnation sticks to a similar formula.

It's not much of a game without the inter-species ship combat. Hell, the first SC was only combat.

Without having any actual knowledge, I would expect that there is an easy setting that would make the combat pretty manageable. I hope it's there, anyway.
