Microsoft has uncovered new hacking attempts by Russia targeting U.S. political groups ahead of the midterm elections.

The company said Tuesday that a group tied to the Russian government created fake websites that appeared to spoof two American conservative organizations: the Hudson Institute and the International Republican Institute. Three other fake sites were designed to look as if they belonged to the U.S. Senate.

Microsoft didn’t offer any further description of the fake sites, and the Russian officials dismissed its claims as unfounded.
...
Microsoft calls the hacking group Strontium; others call it Fancy Bear or APT28. An indictment from U.S. special counsel Robert Mueller has tied it to Russian’s main intelligence agency, known as the GRU, and to the 2016 email hacking of both the Democratic National Committee and the Clinton campaign.
...
Microsoft has waged a legal battle with Strontium since suing it in a Virginia federal court in summer 2016. The company obtained court approval last year allowing it to seize certain fake domains created by the group. It has so far used the courts to shut down 84 fake websites created by the group, including the most recent six announced Tuesday.

Microsoft has argued in court that by setting up fake but realistic-looking domains, the hackers were misusing Microsoft trademarks and services to hack into targeted computer networks, install malware and steal sensitive emails and other data.

Smith also announced Tuesday that the company is offering free cybersecurity protection to all U.S. political candidates, campaigns and other political organizations, at least so long as they’re already using Microsoft’s Office 365 productivity software. Facebook and Google have also promoted similar tools to combat campaign interference.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Interesting tonal shift from DHS this morning
Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen on Wednesday called out Russian President Vladimir Putin by name for interfering in the 2016 US election, calling it a "direct attack" on US democracy.

"At Vladimir Putin's direction, Moscow launched a brazen, multi-faceted influence campaign to undermine public faith in our democratic process and to distort our presidential election," Nielsen said at George Washington University in Washington. "Although no actual ballots were altered by this campaign, make no mistake: This was a direct attack on our democracy."

Nielsen continued that the administration "will not tolerate" such interference nor "let it happen again."
My guess is that she makes this statement so the administration can say "See, we're tough on Russia!" without having to actually, you know, do anything.
When darkness veils the world, four Warriors of Light shall come.

Are you saying that Russia didn't directly alter a ballot, or that they didn't sway a voter? I'm not sure they compromised a vote once it had been cast, but they certainly played a role in everything up to that point.

We have no way of knowing whether Russia manipulated votes after they were cast because most states didn't do audits and some states can't do audits b/c no paper trail. We do know that Russia hacked or tried to hack into the computer election systems of many states. What if anything they accomplished, we don't and likely will never know because of the above two issues. So my point is that it is incorrect to say that Russia didn't change vote totals because we can't be sure whether they did or not.

Why hasn't Trump been confronted with this approach:

Liberals may hack the voting system to depress Trump votes. We need to improve our voting systems to make them impenetrable in response.
"If the facts don't fit the theory, change the facts." - Albert Einstein
"I don't stand by anything." - Trump
“Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing.” - John Stuart Mill, Inaugural Address Delivered to the University of St Andrews, 2/1/1867
“It is the impractical things in this tumultuous hell-scape of a world that matter most. A book, a name, chicken soup. They help us remember that, even in our darkest hour, life is still to be savored.” - Poe, Altered Carbon

Because deep down, he really wants Putin to turn more of those 3.6 million fake votes into real votes for him. Putin can't do that if we start locking the screen door he used last time.

Manafort and Mueller may have come to a plea deal:
Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort has tentatively agreed to a plea deal with special counsel Robert Mueller that will head off his upcoming trial, sources familiar with the negotiations tell ABC News.

The deal is expected to be announced in court Friday, but it remains unclear whether Manafort has agreed to cooperate with prosecutors or is simply conceding to a guilty plea, which would allow him to avoid the stress and expense of trial, according to three sources with knowledge of the discussions.

You know who gets indoctrinated that easily? Weak minded people.

And purging conservatives from tech giants will only result in you guys getting even dumber IT support. Stop whining about not getting fair coverage (which is a lie anyway, but hey...you saw it on Fox so it must be true!) and go build your own damn social media platform. The rest of us are tired of doing everything for you.

It's true, during university / at university are socialistic expressions. Ask any Canadian or European. IN AMERICA we go to college. We graduate from College. We we're done, we will have spent our time in college and earned our college degree and will have attended college. Our high school is for college prep. We label degrees Bachelor's and higher from a University (That and the toon degree). But that's it. Everything else, unless you are referring to University by name. College.

Round here, if you say "during university" you may as well say "It was boot the time I got my ring in engineering."

Troll factory in St Pete firebombed last night:
The office of Russia’s infamous troll factory believed to be at the vanguard of Russia’s information war has been set on fire in St. Petersburg overnight...

...The Fontanka.ru news website cited police as saying that an unknown suspect broke the agency’s ground-floor window and threw a Molotov cocktail inside at around 3 a.m. on Tuesday.

Assorted news items on where the Russia investigation may be going.

Here's my favorite part, though:
“I think we’ll be treated very fairly,” President Trump told reporters yesterday, after meeting with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. “Everybody understands there was no collusion, there’s no Russia. It was all made up by the Democrats.”
Now Trump really has Mueller over a barrel. Mueller got so excited over various possible misdeeds between Trump and Russia, he *forgot to check whether Russia is a country*. Since there's no Russia, there's nothing for Trump to collude with, and the investigation must be shut down.

Seems airtight.
