Growing up in MI you get grandfathered into being a Lions fans. Your grandfather watches the Lions so you watch the Lions.

I've been paying attention to Lions games since, oh...about 1973 or '74. In the early '90's I became an active watcher (Did you ever SEE Barry Sanders run!? G.O.A.T.)

So, in almost 45 years of watching Lions games I gotta say that was the worst I've ever seen. Even worse than when Mike Utley got paralyzed.

A buddy of mine (an uppity Eagles fan, even) was giving me grief about last night's game. I explained that I think I just freed up 14 Sundays this fall. (He asked about that number, but I explained Lions fans always get two turkeys on Thanksgiving.)

Going from the high of the first play from scrimmage to everything that followed (especially in the second half) was... not fun.

The Lions horror actually worked out pretty well for me last night. I went out to my favorite local bar to watch it, and ended up having a lady friend come out to join me. I had absolutely no reason to pay any attention to the game and had a lovely conversation. Every time I'd glance up at the screen the Jets were casually strolling into the end zone, holding hands and singing follow the yellow brick road or something. Things might be going somewhere with the lady, so it was perfect.

Awesome, good luck! If things go the distance, perhaps Stafford can dedicate an interception in your honor!

The GB Vikings game is really exciting to watch! And as much as I enjoyed hating the Redskins I’ve always wished Kirk Cousins well and he’s doing great in his debut. Amazing what a QB can do when he has protection.

Which cemented my absolute worst sports weekend in recent memory.

- Utah loses a winnable game to Washington due primarily due to boneheaded mental mistakes
- Raiders lose to Broncos on a last minute FG
- BYU beats the #6 team in the country, a win I'm sure those of us in SLC won't hear the end of for the next 10 years

Wakes up to see if Giants scored yet, but instead sees Eli gets crushed trying for the touchdown. I think there are no real winners in this game as they fight to see who gets the bottom of the division. Hmmm, I wonder if the next episode of Ballers is on yet...?

I was mystified by that play in the Chargers - Bills game where one of the Bills picked up a fumble in his own end zone and got lambasted for a safety. But because his helmet came off they gave the ball to the Bills at the one yard line. Shouldn't it still be a safety but enforce the roughing penalty on the kick?

No. The Bills player didn't pick up a fumble. The ball was still considered in the live kick state (the original dude didn't get possession because he was tackled as the ball was arrived, which should have been a penalty). So you've got a live ball in the end zone which is where the Bills player obtained possession. At which point his helmet was torn off and the play is over instantly, as a touchback. Then the addition of the 15-yard for a helmet to skull hit delivered by an additional Charger, because the refs didn't whistle the play dead.

Of course, whether or not the ball should have still been considered in the live kicking state, I do not know. I'm also trying to figure out how a clear fumble by the Chargers, with no view of recovery under the pile, but where the Bills came out of the pile with the ball, was somehow called Chargers ball on the field, making it impossible to overturn. Odd.

But he didn't rip Landry's helmet off. He ripped his own helmet off. Which is still a penalty.
