[Movie] How about trailers for Shazam and Aquaman?

Post by DD* »

Shazam
Aquaman

For me, Shazam looks good, I can take or leave Aquaman. Didn't really think all that much of the character in Justice League and this didn't change my mind much.

Neither of those look that good to me, but Shazam just seems awful. I will say casting Stuie from Family Guy as Black Mantis in Aquaman looks fun.

Shazam I was meh until Chuck showed up. That looks fun. Aquaman and King Kong I won't bother.

Shazam looked surprisingly good to me. The images I've seen haven't looked great. But the trailer made it look like a fun movie, which is rare for DC. I've gone from "meh" to "cautiously optimistic".

Aquaman looks like it has a high chance of being complete crap. I'll still see it though, because I'm a sucker for super hero movies. Even the awful DC ones.

I've heard nothing about the Shazam movie. Looks like it could be good fun! (And wasn't the original comic a sort of knowing wink at Superman?)

Aquaman looks 100% formulaic. It will probably be awful.

I couldn't quite tell yet about either. I only have the Marvel and DC movies as benchmarks.

Shazam: DC making a fun film? I dunno. It *could* be bad, but what expectations do we have for DC? It could surprise us. 5/8 tentacles.

Aquaman: Hmmm... I'm not too convinced of the huge battle scene yet.

They both looked bad to me. And for me, Batman is still the only DC movie I have liked.

I was pretty MEH on the new Wonder Woman. Watchable but not near my favorite of all the comic hero movies.

Aw, c'mon...Shazam looks fun. We asked for something "not Snyder-ish", so they're giving us something light.

You can be light without looking like your costume was made in the parking lot of a Costco by a homeless guy, or your jokes written by Nick Nolte.

I'll give it a chance though. The only thing that might save it is a self aware script and the charm of Zachary Levi.

I actually really liked both of them. The Shazam costume was a little much, but if that's the only thing I saw wrong, I'm happy.

Both seemed fairly true to the characters, too.

Reel Aquaman in when it hits TV

Watch 3Titans episodes before I decide. Looks like that got Jason Todd all in my Dick Greyson.

Shazam looks like a movie my 9 year old would enjoy. I might chuckle a few times.

Aquaman looks, as said before, formulaic and kind of uninteresting for that. Nice visuals, though.

I love how you and I have the exact opposite take on everything. The camp of the costume made me laugh. The idea that we're getting a DC Superhero movie basically from the narrative of just entering puberty entertains me.

Zack Levi... aw man, I don't know who but not him... A younger Zack Braff maybe... There we go! Donald Faison could fake being young enough ,right? How great would he be in that costume being a modern version of Big the DC universe superhero?

the more I watch the Shazam! trailer the more it grows on me if I don't take it too seriously and view it as a campy super hero movie.

Shazam, in my opinion, both the comics and the movie, are best looked at, not as a modern superhero film full of adults with adult issues, but as a troubled (but good hearted) 14-year-old's fantasy about what he'd do if he became a superhero. Mostly because that's exactly what it is.

If I was a kid Id probably love the new Shazam. As an adult Id watch it free on tv most likely. It looks bad to me. May turn out to be damn funny with lots of adult in jokes kids wont get. The costume though is ...bad. I grew up on the 70's tv show though and loved that but kids today would shit on it Im sure. Hell I might. But I think Id rather watch it than this movie. Yet I am possibly wrong. been wrong once or twice.

FWIW, the costume in the trailer is not the final costume. They made a last-minute change to it before the teaser, and weren't happy with how it turned out. The final suit is supposedly darker red, and the lightning bolt isn't just a light-up shape.

This would be unfilmable without a lot of CGI. You'd either get no movie at all or you'd get 70s style movie underwater. Neither of which would be a good outcome.

So my wife and I saw Aquaman today. It's ... wow... something. It definitely doesn't sit still. I still haven't quite figured out my opinion of it. It's somewhere between entertainingly awful or awfully entertaining. It's a visual spectacle at times. They cram a LOT of story into 2.5 hours. At times it feels like the movie never stops to take a breath. And it's simply amazing how much shit they cram into it. Trying to avoid spoilers, but I was awed at the scale of the ending, and at the same time couldn't figure out if I thought it was awesome or just too much.

I will give them credit for actually making the Aquaman telepathy rings actually seem kind of cool. Anyway, I think we liked it.

What I can't past in the trailers is the feeling that someone somewhere said "Get Willem Dafoe for this role, except he needs to look weirder".

Watched Aquaman yesterday, regular not 3D, matinee, theater was pretty empty.

CGI was good, but then this is 2018. Scale of final battle was impressive. What do have problem with is the initial intro segment and the premise.
Spoiler:
Okay, Manta hijacks a Russian sub (at the behest of King Orm as part of power grab) He docks the stealth sub onto the hull of the Russian sub. They somehow broke through the hatch, kills half the crew, and the other half hid... where? Did they say the torpedo room or the engineering spaces? Didn't the stealth sub land in the FRONT of the sub? Why didn't they just gas the sub, as every bad guy was wearing masks except dad and son? /// Oh, and how did the human sub got past the perimeter guards to ambush the amphitheater any way?
The eco message was a bit... heavy-handed. But then, I guess they are pressed for time.

I just have a problem with Arthur being the ONLY ONE in the Seven Seas who can talk to fish... Despite 7 kingdoms (well, a lot fewer now) that lives underwater...

Saw Aquaman yesterday. Better than most DC offerings, not quite to Wonder Woman levels, but still not a film that I had any major issues with.

I wasn't a fan of Manta. They got the look right, but there was no depth to the character before the 'defining moment'. When you're measuring up against Killmonger and Thanos in recent films, having a one-note villain is kind of jarring, even if he is second-tier to the fish king.
It's almost as if people are the problem.
