Re: MLB Offseason Thread - 2018-19
People can badmouth Showalter and Duquette but I'll always be thankful that they broke the streak of 14 losing seasons and brought playoff baseball back to Baltimore. Yes, they tried to extend the window too far, and this last year has been miserable, but I think a lot of that is the fault of ownership and Brady Anderson meddling around. Not much bright on the horizon but at least there were some cool memories over the last few years.

I’m not badmouthing Showalter. I’m just bummed that we broke his streak.

Angels hire Brad Ausmus as their new skipper. Any thoughts from the Detroit crowd?

Re: MLB Offseason Thread - 2018-19
He managed a perennial WS contending team of Jim Leland (and to Guap's pleasure also a team of Dombrowski) in to last place over a few short years, with many of the players leaving the team, going on to be a part of WS championship teams in other towns. He probably lost the Tigers six or ten games a year and I can't think of any his decisions won. He'll tell you he's managing a season not a game loss after loss.
The players will love him though, even as they lose game after game, and the theory is he's supposed be be metrics guy even if I am too dumb to see it. By the end of year 2 it was clear to me we couldn't get rid of fast enough.
So if there was a WAR for managers I'd have to say he's a -8 at least.

I'd be happy getting Eovaldi too.
David Price has said he will opt in to the remainder of his contract (he has until tonight to make it official). I'm fine with this even if he is a dumpster fire. Five year grace period is in effect.
The parade is also currently in effect.

And hey, if they signed Eovaldi, they could save a buttload of cash, as I'm pretty sure that they could fire all of their other starters and just have Eovaldi start every day.stessier wrote: ↑Wed Oct 31, 2018 11:30 amI'd be happy getting Eovaldi too.

They also picked up Sale's $15 million option for 2019. That seems like a bargain.

Kershaw re-signs for 3 years for $93 M. That does not seem like a bargain.

Re: MLB Offseason Thread - 2018-19
Kershaw when healthy is still a great regular season starter. But I do believe he is going to have to become a "smarter" pitcher and learn to use his pitches better. It was pointed out several times during the post season how his pitches speeds were closer than they should be and how he continued trying to pitch to the same areas batter after batter.

Is there some ritual to be performed when your team hires a manager that's younger than you?
Chris Woodward will be managing the Texas Rangers. He's a month younger than I am.

Gratz nadnaek for taking one of our best. Keep in mind that he will not give a rat's ass about fans support of players. If he thinks he can get value in trading MadBum, he'll trade him in a heart beat. All that guy looks at is spreadsheets so get ready for some changes that you may not understand at first.

why they want anyone in the dodger organization is beyond me. Failure after failure. Hopefully he's learned from his mistakes.

Re: MLB Offseason Thread - 2018-19
He has not made any mistakes. There are no failures of process in his/their world. The players have not played to expectations when there is failure. Remember all of this!!!!
Also probably because the Giants haven't made the playoffs in donkey's years and haven't won the division in what, hey THE LAST SIX YEARS THAT THE DODGERS HAVE WON IT.
It can't really surprise you that they'd want the Dodgers GM??? Seriously?

Two straight World Series appearances seems pretty much the opposite of failure.
Unless you're going to judge a GM based on a seven game sample.

Re: MLB Offseason Thread - 2018-19
Cuba
Major League Baseball on Wednesday reached a historic agreement with Cuba’s baseball federation, modeled after those with leagues in Japan and Korea, that will regulate and streamline the entry of Cuban players coming to the U.S., the league confirmed. An announcement was expected later Wednesday.
The agreement, the result of years of negotiations between MLB, the MLB Players Association, the Cuban Baseball Federation (FCB) and the U.S. government, is designed to end decades of fraught relations between MLB and Cuba and eliminate the need for Cuban players to defect. The new system won’t change how Cuban players are compensated by MLB teams, but will result in “release” fees being paid to the FCB for those players’ services.
Under the new system, Cuban players will be signed out of Cuba and, subject to U.S. government approval, granted a work visa. However, a State Department spokesman confirmed that players will have to travel to a third country for their visa, like other Cuban nationals, per current U.S. policy.
In MLB’s view, the move was motivated by humanitarian concerns to halt the influence of smugglers and traffickers who have preyed upon Cuban defectors in the past.
...
Under the new agreement, Cuban players can still elect to leave the island, establish residency elsewhere and join MLB, but they would be subject to a waiting period of as long as two years, and the MLB team that signs him would still have to pay a release fee to his former Cuban club.
...
It was unclear how MLB obtained authorization from the State Department to work around the embargo that would otherwise block such an agreement.

He went to the WS two years in a row while your team didn’t even think about making the playoffs. Although now that you have OUR GM maybe things will get better for you, managing the organization the Dodger way.

Salary dump, plain and simple. The Dodgers must be looking at acquiring either an outfielder or a first baseman.
