The Violence Against Women Act first passed in 1994 and will lapse on Dec. 7 for the second time since its passage. The law would have expired Sept. 30, but an extension appeared in the stop-gap funding bill that kept the federal government operating at full capacity, according to Roll Call. The federal government’s partial shutdown may be delayed by two weeks in a bipartisan short-term compromise
A new stop-gap bill filed in the House Dec. 3, postponing the showdown for a government shutdown on Dec. 7 by two weeks to avoid conflicting with the state funeral of President George H.W. Bush, lacks the language to extend the law, House staffers told Roll Call.

The Act's 2012 renewal was opposed by conservative Republicans, who objected to extending the Act's protections to same-sex couples and to provisions allowing battered undocumented individuals to claim temporary visas, also known as U visas. The U visa is restricted to 10,000 applicants annually whereas the number of applicants far exceeds these 10,000 for each fiscal year.[13] In order to be considered for the U visa, one of the requirements for immigrant women is that they need to cooperate in the detention of the abuser.[18] Studies show that 30 to 50% of immigrant women are suffering from physical violence and 62% experience physical or psychological abuse in contrast to only 21% of citizens in the United States.
I can't imagine why the current Congress and administration wouldn't want to make it a top priority to remedy.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

The Right to chuck snowballs shall not be infringed!
His mum said he first learned of the technicality ban during a visit to the town hall of Severance, which is north of Denver.

Kyle Rietkerk, assistant to the Severance town administrator, said "all the kids always get blown away" when they find out was illegal to throw snowballs there, AP reports.

"So, what ends up happening is [town leaders] always encourage the kids with, 'You have the power you can change the law'. No-one has," he said...

...The law itself is thought to date back to the town's founding about 100 years ago, although no-one is believed to have been charged with the offence.

After the young campaigner's presentation, the result was unanimous from officials.

When the ban had officially ended, the town's mayor handed Dane and his four-year-old brother Dax the first legal snowballs in the town's history.

Given the size of it, I would imagine there is something illegal in something in there - there would almost have to be when it's that scale (not in that it's illegal because of the scale but in that, as an analogy, if you looked at one million people, you're bound to find someone that's a criminal in that group). The question is, is it something small and minor? Is it tax evasion? Is it funding (or being funded by) things like drugs? Dr Evil's giant laser?

announced today the unsealing of an indictment charging RAMSES OWENS, DIRK BRAUER, RICHARD GAFFEY, and HARALD JOACHIM VON DER GOLTZ, with wire fraud, tax fraud, money laundering, and other offenses in connection with their roles in a decades-long criminal scheme perpetrated by Mossack Fonseca & Co. (“Mossack Fonseca”), a Panamanian-based global law firm, and related entities.

Three of the four defendants named in the indictment have been arrested. BRAUER, who worked as an investment manager for Mossfon Asset Management, S.A., an asset management company closely affiliated with Mossack Fonseca, was arrested in Paris, France, on November 15, 2018. VON DER GOLTZ, a former U.S. resident and taxpayer, was arrested in London, United Kingdom, on December 3, 2018. GAFFEY, a U.S.-based accountant, was arrested in Medfield, Massachusetts, this morning. OWENS, a Panamanian attorney who worked for Mossack Fonseca, remains at large.

Almost as infuriating is the continued "it's unprecedented!!!" weak sauce blowback by those affected. Hopefully they are going to fight it in the courts, but again, this argument, to me, is meaningless, as if somehow, because it's never happened before, it's going to make a bigger impact or somehow shame the guilty party into...retreating? "This is unprecedented" is a bullshit answer to the shit going down all around us, when it's so easily countered by "SO WHAT?".

"Never in Wisconsin history “has an extraordinary session been used to deny the will of the people and take away powers from the newly elected governor and newly elected attorney general,” Democratic Rep. Chris Taylor said."

I think this is just a pet peeve of mine, since it's used on an almost daily basis, and appears to be some kind of seemingly useful contribution to resisting.

Same with Trump, obviously. Let's stop wringing our hands about the fact that these clowns are doing something that no one before them has, and fucking do something about it! Or at least to prevent it from happening in the future. Again, I am not sure what else can be done, other than citizen protesting (check) or lawsuits (probably incoming, half check).

Canadian said to be detained in China, Huawei CFO due back in court
A former Canadian diplomat has been detained in China, two sources said on Tuesday, just hours before a top executive at Chinese telecoms giant Huawei Technologies [HWT.UL] is set to return to a Vancouver courtroom for a bail hearing that has angered Beijing.

It was not immediately clear if the cases were related, but Canadian analysts had already predicted China would retaliate after the arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou at the request of U.S. authorities.

The former diplomat is Michael Kovrig, who is based in China. He works for the International Crisis Group, which said it was seeking his prompt and safe release.

Canadian foreign ministry officials said they were not immediately able to confirm that Kovrig was in detention.

Also it invites endless what-about-ism attacks where some Democrat somewhere did something slightly similar. Of course, leaving out the context that whatever it was was not part of a much larger well-funded organized effort to undermine Democracy across the United States.

Super long article on the Woman's March and some of their problems, particularily in their leadership, from anti-Semitism, to conflicts between the national group and the local organizers, to dubious financial arrangements and other things.

Is the Women’s March Melting Down?
It was there that, as the women were opening up about their backgrounds and personal investments in creating a resistance movement to Trump, Perez and Mallory allegedly first asserted that Jewish people bore a special collective responsibility as exploiters of black and brown people—and even, according to a close secondhand source, claimed that Jews were proven to have been leaders of the American slave trade. These are canards popularized by The Secret Relationship Between Blacks and Jews, a book published by Louis Farrakhan’s Nation of Islam—“the bible of the new anti-Semitism,” according to Henry Louis Gates Jr., who noted in 1992: “Among significant sectors of the black community, this brief has become a credo of a new philosophy of black self-affirmation.”
As its fame grew, so did the questions about the Women’s March’s origin story—including, at first privately within the inner circles of the organizations, questions pertaining to the possible anti-Jewish statement made at that very first meeting. And that wasn’t the only incident from the initial encounter that would have far-reaching consequences. Within a few months of the original marches, key figures who came from outside or stood apart from the inner circle of the Justice League, an initiative of The Gathering for Justice, left the organization. And many of those involved began questioning why it was that, among the many women of various backgrounds interested in being involved in the March’s earliest days, power had consolidated in the hands of leadership who all had previous ties to one another; who were all roughly the same age; who would praise a man who has argued that it’s women’s responsibility to dress modestly so as to avoid tempting men; and, at least in one case, who defended Bill Cosby as the victim of a conspiracy.
The Women’s March leaders have often dismissed their critics as right wing or driven by racism, but over the past two months their fiercest challengers have come from within their own shop—with women of color, and their own local organizers, often leading the pack. As of this article’s publication, numerous state chapters have broken off from the national organization—notably Houston, Washington, D.C., Alabama, Rhode Island, Florida, Portland, Illinois, Barcelona, Canada, and Women’s March GLOBAL.*
The development of the origins of the Women’s March and its transformation into a vehicle that promoted a small coterie of women—three of whom bizarrely professed their admiration for the openly anti-Semitic, homophobic, and misogynistic Nation of Islam preacher Louis Farrakhan—was a deliberate act, one that had nothing to do with the general spirit out of which the March was born.
At the end of January, according to multiple sources, there was an official debriefing at Mallory’s apartment. In attendance were Mallory, Evvie Harmon, Breanne Butler, Vanessa Wruble, Cassady Fendlay, Carmen Perez and Linda Sarsour. They should have been basking in the afterglow of their massive success, but—according to Harmon—the air was thick with conflict. “We sat in that room for hours,” Harmon told Tablet recently. “Tamika told us that the problem was that there were five white women in the room and only three women of color, and that she didn’t trust white women. Especially white women from the South. At that point, I kind of tuned out because I was so used to hearing this type of talk from Tamika. But then I noticed the energy in the room changed. I suddenly realized that Tamika and Carmen were facing Vanessa, who was sitting on a couch, and berating her—but it wasn’t about her being white. It was about her being Jewish. ‘Your people this, your people that.’ I was raised in the South and the language that was used is language that I’m very used to hearing in rural South Carolina. Just instead of against black people, against Jewish people. They even said to her ‘your people hold all the wealth.’ You could hear a pin drop. It was awful.”
On March 11, 2018, the Women’s March had their biweekly phone call with national organizers. The public controversy had started to explode over Mallory’s attendance at the Saviours’ Day event, during which, in the course of a three-hour speech, Farrakhan blamed Jews for “degenerate behavior in Hollywood, turning men into women and women into men.” Angie Beem, president of the Washington state chapter, remembered that phone call.

“Many of us were upset,” Beem told Tablet. “She is the face of a women’s march, and our mission and values are equality and inclusion. To openly praise someone like this went against everything we were supposed to stand by.” Beem described a sense of awkwardness as Mallory went on to defend Farrakhan to over 40 women on the call. And she wasn’t alone, Beem said; Perez and Bland jumped in to defend him as well. “They said to us: ‘You know, he has done some great things for people of color.’ They didn’t denounce anything he said, they only did that recently. Some state people supported them and some who were very brave stood up to them. One woman said something like, ‘Just because somebody does one good thing doesn’t mean they are excused for everything else.’ They said, ‘We hear you.’ But then they refused to do anything about it.”
“There are no Jewish women on the board. They refused to put any on. Most of the Jewish people resigned and left. They refused to even put anti-Semitism in the unity principles.”
In any case, Morganfield and others began pointing to what they said were deeper problems. “There is no LGBTQIA representation on their Board of Directors—this is not an intersectional organization—it’s smoke and mirrors,” said Morganfield. “Their Disability Caucus has one person in it. One. Their Veterans Caucus HAD one person in it. They no longer have a Veterans Caucus.”
It would appear that the Women’s March has been a banner success for CrowdRise—a high profile and much lauded progressive cause raising millions on its platform. And yet, it’s not at all clear that the Women’s March is even eligible to raise money on CrowdRise. “To qualify for a Charity Account on CrowdRise, nonprofits must be listed in the GuideStar database and recognized as a U.S.-based 501(c)3 nonprofit,” the site states and details in its terms of service. But the Women’s March is not a 501(c)3 nonprofit, it’s a different kind of organization, a 501(c)4, and it was not listed on the Guidestar database as the requirement clearly states. Reached for comment about this apparent discrepancy, CrowdRise replied with a one line answer: “We did look into it. Women’s March Inc. is a 501(c)(4). Thanks!”

Canadian Michael Spavor detained in China as Huawei row continues
A second Canadian has been detained in China on accusations of harming national security, as tension continues between the two countries.

It was confirmed on Thursday that Michael Spavor, a businessman, had been detained in addition to former diplomat Michael Kovrig.

Canada drew Chinese protests after it arrested an executive at telecoms giant Huawei at the request of the US.

Meng Wanzhou has been bailed but may face extradition for fraud.

She denies violating US sanctions on Iran through Huawei's business dealings. China has threatened unspecified consequences if she is not released.

So high-profile is the case that US President Donald Trump said he could intervene if it helped to avoid a further decline in relations between the US and China, which are locked in a trade war.

However, Mr Trump's own officials frowned on the idea, with US Assistant Attorney General John Demers remarking: "What we do at the justice department is law enforcement. We don't do trade."

China is going after Canada because they can. They aren't in the middle of an economy defining trade conflict with Canada.

Never mind that we are doing it at the US's behest, as a good treaty signee should. I have yet to see China even acknowledge that this is the US's doing, let alone criticize the US for it.

Hilarious. Not for the Canadians under detention in China of course, but geezus.

And drumpf understands that when he says he might step in if it gets him what he wants, is basically the same thing as admit he has taken a hostage and is extorting China, right? I mean, right? Either it's a just request or it isn't. realpolitik exists, and maybe the two countries come to an agreement behind closed doors, but you don't admit to extortion on the world stage, unless your goal is to become everyone's enemy, maybe?

Even some national Democratic leaders have criticized the plan, fearing that it undercuts Democratic efforts to attack what they term Republican strong-arm tactics in state capitals across the country.
Ya think? It's not wrong only when they benefit from it. It's just wrong. That says to me your democrats in power are as bad as, if not worst than our republicans, where retaining power is first and foremost.

Have never been a fan of Holder, but I stand with him.
It overhauls the makeup of a redistricting committee to give more power to legislative leaders. It also establishes a “fairness test” requiring district maps to reflect how major political parties perform in statewide elections for governor, senator and president.
What does that even mean?

All I know is what you posted. What you posted sound like NJ state gov't is trying to constitutionally run from what Michigan is running away from. Michigan just constitutionally passed running to what NJ is running away from. Your democratic leaders can say it's a will of the people thing all they want but when the empowered leaders are further empowered to draw "the will of the people" you literally end with empowered leaders choosing who their voters are.

Signed, a voter in one of the worst gerrrymandered states in the union which voted strongly to end that shit, a voter who is thankful so many crossed party lines to reject the lies of the empowered minority and their strong financial backing. It's gives hope.

Knew this is coming but is very emblematic of the lack of intellectual rigidity on the right. #NeverTrumpers are essentially being purged from the Republican party (if they haven't done it themselves such as Tom Nichols did). As others have commented this is more evidence that they will circle wagons around Trump and go down fighting. Why? Who the hell knows.

They're just fully embracing their dark sides and giving up on being human. Like when a town in H.P. Lovecraft's universe is mostly converted to fish people, they mob up and destroy the regular humans so they can shed their skins and return to the depths.

Only the GOP isn't returning to the depths. They're expecting to dance naked in the moonlight, chanting and making human sacrifices, in full view of all the neighboring towns and have no one raise a hand to stop them.

NeverTrumpers are in a terrible position.

Kristol, for example, hates Trump for Trump's slimy lowbrow griftiness, but he is still perfectly willing to embrace the trickle-down fantasies of Ryan/McConnell. Since he has never apologized for his own past transgressions (such as propagandizing against the social safety net or for the invasion of Iraq as the solution to Al Qaeda), few to his left are inclined to embrace him.

The easiest route is to reject conservative orthodoxy and declare yourself a center-right independent (e.g. Max Boot, Rick Wilson, Tom Nichols, in varying degrees), but Kristol is still keeping to the Reagan Faith (the real one, not the fuzzy myth). And Reagan is where the rot began.

Under current circumstances, it's sad to see The Weekly Standard fail. Under normal politics, we would be happy to see its decline.

If you haven't seen the video of the New York subway woman going insane on an Asian lady for no reason at all, it's bonkers. I'm guessing she's mentally unstable and probably needs help.

However, I do have to admit to loving the response from one passenger who spoke up and was then called "Fucking Mohammed," by the woman.

"What? Bitch, I'm Dominican!"

For some reason, that line cracks me up.

A Nebraska elementary school principal has been placed on administrative leave after banning candy canes from her school, FOX 42 reports. She reportedly sent a memo to school administrators to ensure no Christmas-related imagery appeared on assignments or in classrooms.

In the memo, Principal Jennifer Sinclair allegedly wrote of candy canes: "Historically, the shape is a ‘J’ for Jesus. The red is for the blood of Christ, and the white is a symbol of his resurrection."

I'm glad that the great diety Disney was represented by Olaf which was allowed in class.

Where did she get that info about candy canes? Facebook?

(From Wikipedia, the cane is to remind us of the shepherds present for the birth of Jesus and the white color represents His sinless life. I guess Olaf it is, blessed be The Mouse)

Rep.-elect Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) announced she plans to wear a traditional Palestinian gown when she is sworn into Congress next month.

She made the announcement in a post on Instagram featuring a photo of the thobe on Friday.

"Sneak peek: This is what I am wearing when I am sworn into Congress," Tlaib captioned the photo, in addition to the hashtags #PalestinianThobe and #ForMyYama — which means mother in Arabic.
P.S. The gown is lovely.

Considering you can be sworn in on pretty much anything besides a bible, this is small potatoes. In fact I don't understand what the controversy is here. Admittedly I don't know the significance behind the piece of clothing, but it just looks like a normal piece of clothing to me. If it wasn't labeled, would anyone even know there was something to be upset about?

I believe the issue is that the gown is traditional in the sense it is the clothing traditionally worn before jumping out of closets to eat your God-fearing Christian children.

I don't think there is a controversy yet, Skiny is just laying the groundwork.

Texas
Bahia Amawi, a speech pathologist who has worked as a contractor in a Texas school district for nine years, received a new contract agreement to sign in September for the upcoming school year.

The agreement asked her to affirm that she did not boycott Israel and assert that she would not while working for the school.

She declined to sign it. Amawi, an American citizen of Palestinian descent who was born in Austria, said the statements infringed on her principles: her stance on Israel’s treatment of Palestinians and her belief in the First Amendment. So she was forced to stop working with the district.

The contract, which stems from a 2017 law passed by the state’s Republican-held legislature and governor that prohibited state agencies from contracting with companies boycotting Israel, is the subject of a lawsuit filed this week by Amawi in federal district court in Austin.

Amawi says the state’s enforcement of the law violates her right to free speech.
...
Amawi started working for the Pflugerville Independent School District outside Austin in 2009. Her work entails doing evaluations of Arabic-speaking children, according to the complaint she filed. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and the school district are named in the lawsuit.

In a statement posted on Facebook, the district said it was bound by the recently passed Texas state law, which it cast in a negative light.

“This language is required by the State of Texas for all school districts in Texas, along with other governmental entities,” the statement said. “Unfortunately, Pflugerville ISD and all Texas school districts are at the mercy of the state and the regulations printed into law, and in situations such as this, we are forced to spend time on state political issues and not on our core mission — educating students."
...
The bill’s language has been interpreted so broadly that the application for some grants for victims of Hurricane Harvey included a similar provision, drawing rebukes from local officials and the American Civil Liberties Union.
...
Fred O. Smith, a constitutional law expert at Emory University, cited two Supreme Court precedents: a 1996 case that found that it was unconstitutional for government officials to retaliate against independent contractors for their speech, as well as 1976 ruling, Elrod v. Burns, that found it unconstitutional for governments to refuse to hire people for their political views, in most circumstances.
...
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) tweeted his support for Israel on Monday as news of Amawi’s lawsuit began to circulate.

“Texas stands with Israel,” he wrote. “Period.”
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Not so fast re: Texas (per Volokh):
In short, this story is being widely misreported, the hysterical claims that Amawi is being forced to sign a pro-Israel pledge or personally do or not do anything in particular regarding Israel outside the context of her business are false, and the First Amendment lawsuit will almost certainly lose. Moreover, it's nearly impossible to think of a way in which Ms. Amawi's speech pathology business would ever have an opportunity to in any way boycott or otherwise economically harm Israel, rendering this pure political theater.

Blood boiling rage right now - (paraphrasing) only 2 children died? I'd say unbelievable but people like him are normal now. Talk about a heartless culture we have on the right now. I saw outrage at first and thought based on the beginning that it was overblown. That was up until he got into the dog whistle racism in the middle of the segment and knew the beginning was just the fake shit he knew he had to say.

California Women's March Canceled for Being 'Overwhelmingly White'
Organizers of a planned Women's March in Eureka, California, cancelled an event due to concerns that too many white people would show up—which is a pretty damning indictment of intersectionality, the ubiquitous yet contradictory philosophy of the modern activist left.

A rally had been scheduled for January 19, but Women's March leaders aborted their plans because "up to this point, the participants have been overwhelmingly white, lacking representation from several perspectives in our community," according to a press release. "This decision was made after many conversations between local social-change organizers and supporters of the march."

This news attracted much derision, and deservedly so. For one thing, the disproportionate white involvement might simply reflect the fact that Eureka is about 75 percent white, according to U.S. Census data. For another, leftists often claim that white people are responsible for President Donald Trump's victory in 2016—inexplicably, white women are held in particular contempt, even though they vote Democratic more often than white men—and need to change their attitudes. But here's some white folks expressing enthusiasm about joining their comrades of color in the #Resistance, only to be told, Well, maybe you should stay home.
