[Movie] Vice

Post by Kraken »

I was psyched to see this until I read a savage 1.5 star Globe review yesterday. By then I'd already bought tickets based on personal interest in the Cheney administration and a bunch of Golden Globe nominations, so I dove in with reduced expectations.

Although some of the Globe's criticisms are valid (and I'm not linking it because I don't agree with its conclusions), I was not disappointed. It's entertaining, informative, and infuriating. It was carefully researched and as accurate as it could be, given Cheney's care in staying behind the scenes. Recommended for all the political junkies here.

Plus, Rockwell was awesome as Bush. I wish he'd had more screen time, but he's only marginally relevant.

Those ads for the movie look like hero worship. Not a movie for me.

Hah! No, it is not a sympathetic portrayal. Not by a long shot.

How was that your takeaway from the commercials and trailers?

Imma refrain from saying anything more so as not to spoil it for people. Go see it so we can talk. :)

The trailer is snappy and has cool graphics and shots of Cheney acting cool. Even shoots someone like an cool outlaw. Nothing I attribute with a grumpy, greedy politician.

I'm not a Cheney fan so I'm biased.

So the movie is pretty factual then? Even I don't like Dick Cheney.

That's about right.
Spoiler:
Bush drops out of the picture after Cheney gets control of the WH. Although this is Cheney's story, I do wish that they had made Bush more than an inconvenient distraction. I'd have liked to see more about their relationship. Did Bush ever try to rein Cheney in? Not if this movie is to be believed. Their relationship must have been more complicated than that, and "Vice" doesn't go there at all.

I just watched the movie. I see no hero worship of Cheney. It's a portrait of a man who lusted for power after he got his first taste of it and wanted nothing more than to acquire more. Bale was impressive as Cheney, that's for sure.

Spoilers, obviously.
He makes a good point that Trump probably isn't going to be able to load the government up with his cronies like Cheney and even to a larger extent Obama was able to do. Trumps cronies aren't in the available pool for the most part, they have to come from outside and then they have to survive Trump's performance reviews. It's too bad he doesn't have more children.

I just saw about half of this movie on a flight yesterday. God it SUCKED hard. I wanted to like it in spite of mostly negative reviews since I liked The Big Short so much. But good lord was it terrible. It was what I would expect if a high school sophomore were writing a play around Dick Cheney.

Cheney: "Let's go steal some power for power's sake, eh?"
Rumsfeld: "YES! Let's get some power because we like being powerful and don't care about any ideology just power and maybe money, but mostly power!"
W. Bush: "I can't follow what you fellows are saying because I am dumb and easily manipulated!"

I'm not a big fan of any of the political figures involved here, but this is a comic book villain version of each of them.

Were there any discussions about leverage?
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Mostly about power. Basically everyone sits around talking about power and what big fans they are of it.
