I say it isn't effective because very few people decide their vote on what some hacks uncovered. In the same token very few voted for Trump because he was preferred by Putin.

If there hadn't been a single political hack in the two years before the election it wouldn't have changed the results an iota.

No, they just cause Trump/Putin supporters to seek out tentacle pr0n sites and 4chan to defend their ridiculous arguments. Other than that, nothing else at all in the world has changed.

Le Pen isn't a moron, and her support for Putin would not have been inadvertent.

Also, it was just a joke riffing on the issue of the effectiveness of the Russian interference. If I weren't joking, I'd have asserted that the Russian efforts are effective because even if they don't swing an election, they still provide a mass of misinformation that can be used to undermine the election results and degrade public confidence in the government. The Russians literally can't lose at this game.

I don't agree that Le Pen would have been a puppet (I never said she was a moron). Nor do I believe that Trump is actually working for Putin (although I do enjoy teasing Rip about it). I do believe that Putin saw a greater threat to his plans in Clinton, and so he worked behind the scenes to get the mangerine into office. Although I do believe Putin also worked his magic through some of Trump's people.

Le Pen is a populist and right now I truly believe Putin sees that as his best way to isolate NATO allied nations. Breaking up the European Union a little piece at a time is a great start. She would have inadvertently helped Putin in that regard.

Le Pen actively desires the break up of the EU (she promised a FREXIT referendum if she won the presidency); she and Putin are fellow travellers in that regard.

Vive la révolution!
Pollsters are projecting that French President Emmanuel Macron's party is on course to win a crushing parliamentary majority following the first round Sunday of legislative elections marked by widespread voter apathy.

Pollsters' projected that as many as one-third of votes went to Macron's camp in the first stage of the two-part election - putting his candidates comfortably ahead of all opponents going into the decisive second round of voting next Sunday for the 577 seats in the lower-house National Assembly.

Pollsters estimated that 400 seats or more could end up in the hands of the Macron camp - and that the opposition in parliament would be fragmented as well as small. The National Front of far-right leader Marine Le Pen seemingly failed to convert her strong showing in the presidential election into a large number of legislative seats. Pollsters projected it could have 10 or fewer legislators - more than the two it had in the last parliament, but not enough to make the National Front the major opposition force Le Pen was hoping for after she advanced for the first time to the presidential runoff vote that Macron won on May 7.

The two mainstream parties that dominated French politics for decades were again left licking their wounds, marginalized by the swing of voter support behind Macron's political revolution.

The former banker and economics minister who had never before held elected office gambled correctly that voters were ready for something completely new: a movement occupying the political center ground, made up largely of new faces, many of them with no political experience at all.

The record-low turnout, however, took some shine off the achievement for Macron's Republic on the Move! - a fledgling party fighting its first-ever election and dedicated to providing France's youngest-ever president with the legislative majority he needs to be effective and enact his promised program of far-reaching change for France.

Voter rejection of old-style, established politics - already seen in the April-May two-round presidential vote that handed power to 39-year-old Macron - was again felt in the legislative vote.

Macron wins strong parliamentary majority, estimates show
President Emmanuel Macron won a commanding majority in France's parliamentary election on Sunday, pollsters' estimates showed, sweeping aside mainstream parties and securing a powerful mandate to push through his pro-business reforms.

The result, if confirmed, redraws France's political landscape, humiliating the Socialist and conservative parties which alternated in power for decades until Macron's election in May.

Two pollsters projected that Macron's Republic on the Move (LREM) and its Modem allies would win 355-360 seats in the 577-seat lower house, lower than previously forecast.

A third poll by Elabe initially showed a far bigger majority, projecting 395-425 seats for the Macron alliance, but later brought down its forecast to 373-403.

The three projections predicted the conservative Republicans and their allies would form the largest opposition bloc with 107-133 seats, while the Socialist Party, in power for the last five years, and its partners would secure 30-49 seats, their lowest ever.

"Tonight, the collapse of the Socialist Party is beyond doubt. The president of the Republic has all the powers," Jean-Christophe Cambadelis said after announcing he would step down as party chief.

He said the party would have to rebuild itself from the top down. Cambadelis was knocked out of the running for parliament in last week's first round of voting.

Far-right leader Marine Le Pen won a seat in the French Assembly for the first time and the polls showed her National Front winning four to eight seats.

Why does Emmanuel Macron’s presidential approval rating keep falling?
At home and abroad, the name Emmanuel Macron elicits vastly different reactions.

In many countries, the 39-year-old French president remains a symbol of youthful dynamism, a darling of social democrats shocked by Brexit and the ascent of Donald Trump. But in France, the man whose landslide victory in May marked the end of Europe’s populist surge is falling out of favor — and fast.

In view of the sky-high expectations for Macron, his initial slide in the polls was to be expected, political analysts say. After little more than three months in office, however, he faces a full-fledged nose-dive in public opinion. According to the latest YouGov poll, published at the beginning of August, just 36 percent of the French now approve of their president, roughly the same as the percentage of Americans who approve of President Trump. On May 7, 66 percent of French voters supported Macron.

That steep decline — especially given the relief that followed Macron’s trouncing of the far-right Marine Le Pen — has baffled political operatives and pollsters here. And although poll numbers fluctuate, the latest figures also have many wondering about the viability of the president’s newly established political party and his ambitious economic proposals.
If this keeps up, it'll be interesting to see whether, in future elections, French voters revert to the old norms or swing to FN.

WaPo
When French politician Marine Le Pen needed cash for her far-right party, an obscure Russian bank agreed to help.

Four years later, the bank has gone bust. The owner is facing a warrant for his arrest. Former Russian military officers are demanding money. And the party’s treasurer is sending off some $165,000 every few months to a woman in Moscow, unsure of where the payments ultimately will go.

The money failed to deliver Le Pen the French presidency in last year’s election, denying the Kremlin a powerful ally in the heart of Europe. Instead, the 9.4 million-euro loan, then worth $12.2 million, dragged her party into the shadowy underworld of Russian cross-border finance, putting it in league with people accused of having ties to Russian organized crime, money laundering and military operations.
It's almost as if people are the problem.
