[Movie] Glass

Post by Smoove_B »

From M. Night Shyamalan, the first full trailer for Glass:

I'll fully admit that I haven't seen one of his movies in a long time. I think maybe the last one was the elevator with the devil in it? I missed Split, and am only now just learning of what happened at the end (and how it ties into this film).

I know many hate him and don't think he's done anything worth watching after The Sixth Sense. I can't completely disagree, however, I do think Unbreakable is a better movie and probably one of my favorites of all time. It's hard to keep the timing of the movie in context because we're now completely overrun with Marvel and DC films media, but when Unbreakable was released it really was an interesting and unique take on the superhero origin story and apparently this brings it all to a conclusion.

Coming in January of 2019.

Loved Unbreakable. Had no interest in Split and didn't even know it was part of the series.

He's making a comeback. The Visitors was quite good, Split was excellent, and this looks killer. Unbreakable was way ahead of its time, and it's awesome to see him tying it all back together.

He fell out of favor for me quite awhile back, but I'm really happy to see him on an upward trend. This could be the film that fully brings him back into fans' good graces.

Unbreakable was good, but I was always turned off by the bleak lighting in that movie. It was just too oppressive throughout the movie to me.

Split is one of my favorite movies. I might even like it better than Unbreakable. I'll be in the theater watching this one.

Split was fantastic. Probably his best work. The ending was iffy, but not as iffy as some of his others. The rest of it was fantastic though. McAvoy was simply amazing. He reminds me of an early Edward Norton.

If you haven't seen Split because it's Shamalamadingdong, you should probably remedy that.

edit: As YK says, The Visitors was quite good as well. Lots of creepy moments.

I haven’t seen Split, but not because of the director. I just feel I’m not emotionally cut out for the theme of the movie. I don’t find suffering entertaining.

I did love more movies of his than most, and I am looking forward to Glass.

I absolutely loved Unbreakable. It wasn't until near the end that I connected the dots that it was a hero origin story. As a former/recovering comic book geek, that was *huge* bonus points for me.

Drifted away from Shyamalan afterward, but if there is more along that vein, then I am interested.

Split was awesome. It's been a really long time since I've seen Unbreakable though. I'll need to fix that, and go back and watch Split again, before seeing Glass.

It's been a long time since I've been excited for an M. Night movie.

Split gave me renewed hope that M. Night hadn’t completely been absorbed by his own ego (let’s not forget he’s made himself a character in most of his films..even going as far as making one of those characters a writer whose work will someday save the world). It told a good story and then linked it back to an even better story. So I’m hyped for this one.

I get that, but it's not torture porn or anything like that. While it's true that some people are abducted, they aren't tortured. It's less suffering than in, say, Silence of the Lambs.

The premise is less about those who were abducted and more about McAvoy getting his crazy on.

Which is not to say that everyone in the movie comes to a good end.

Despite having posted in this thread before now, I just watched the trailer posted in the first post.

I did not expect to see Jackson, Willis and McAvoy in the same room together.

That's...exciting.

Also, I can't help but feel like I failed to convince Fret to see Split. Can you guys help me? I believe his concern is that there is a lot of explicit torturing (mental, physical) but maybe he can clarify.

There is very little, if any, torturing in Split. The abducted girls are not tortured in any significant way (for a movie). Silence of the Lambs "Or it gets the hose again" is worse than anything that happens in Split, if I recall correctly. I'm not sure offering to make a sandwich for your captives is what Fret's worried about.

You really need to see Split, Fret. Especially if you are excited to see Glass, since it looks like the two are heavily entwined at this point. Plus, in my opinion, McAvoy is quite good. Seeing him in action is worth the price of admission. I fear they've made his character too overt and ruined it for Glass. The end of Split was the least interesting part for me, and it looks like his role in Glass is almost exclusively what he did at the end of Split. It still looks great though.

I get the distinct impression that he spends most of this movie as the beast, so it makes sense that he bulked up even more than in Split.

Looks good to me. Split was a pleasant surprise for me. Hopefully M. can hold his ego back and give us a film in the Unbreakable universe that isn’t as self indulgent as many of his previous works.

So I heard this movie stinks and I'm bummed, because I just re-watched Unbreakable and almost done watching Split (yay for long term hospital visits) in preparation for this. Now I don't know if I should waste my money next weekend when the family is out of town, or go see Spiderman and wait for video for Glass.

Good lord, I can't imagine how that could have happened. You could have just shoehorned each actor's character into a rom-com and it would have turned out awesome.

It takes specially suckage to screw this up.

I agree with stimpy. Venom got 28% on Rottentomatoes from critics and 84% from audiences (I liked it too). Critics' opinions don't necessarily mean anything.

I loved Unbreakable and honestly believe it was a direct link to the mainstream superhero movies we have today. (and while not a direct link I'm still a fanboy of the movie interpretation of Tank Girl perhaps the most). I don't remember the critics at all but I remember loving the take on comics in a way no one was exploring.

As much as I enjoyed Unbreakable I'm surprised I never even knew Split was a thing until this thread. Though I have to admit M Night lost me long ago, so shrug. Likely it will rent it and rent Glass one weekend in the future.

Unbreakable has a 69% on RT. Maybe not glowing, but certainly decent reviews. Glass, on the other hand, is getting crushed (currently at 36% and even the “tomato” reviews don’t read very positively).

To each their own, but I’ve found that my tastes usually align much more closely with the critics’ assessment than the audience scores. I just looked up a few terrible (IMO) Michael Bay movies (Transformer sequels, Pearl Harbor, Armageddon) and they all scored in the 30s or below with the critics but over 50% with the audience.

When it was released, it was hated by the critics and fan reviews were mixed. Most were expecting something more like The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable absolutely was not that. I completely think it helped to set up the modern re-telling of the superhero story, even if movies like Iron Man are more comic-booky than Unbreakable was. I think the movie demonstrated clearly that there's room to explore the idea of what it means to be a superhero (similar to what comics did in the 1970s) and what the MCU ultimately started doing on film.

Anyway, I think Unbreakable is criminally underrated and underappreciated. It's absolutely one of my favorite movies. There was a free HBO weekend here a few weeks ago and I recorded Split, but haven't watch it. I'll be seeing Glass as soon as humanly possible.

I remember watching Unbreakable when it first came out, and coming away from it mostly just 'meh'. It was decent, but I didn't really understand why everyone seemed to be raving over it. I probably need to watch it again at some point and see if my opinion on it changes any.

I had never even heard of Split until the guy next to me was watching it on a plane once. I had to ask him what he was watching about 30 minutes in because it looked interesting. I enjoyed it, but that was mostly due to the remarkable job McAvoy did in portraying multiple characters. Outside of his work, it wasn't anything particularly special.

I probably would have seen Glass if reviews had been great. Since they're not, I'll just skip it entirely and maybe catch it on a flight in a couple months.

+1. On the plus side, McAvoy is on screen for like 90% of the movie. And 1/2 the time he's not on screen, no one is. He is the movie.

Critics......
Still, Collider's Vinnie Mancuso gave "Glass" begrudging respect, calling the film "a spectacle, but in a singularly un-Marvel manner. It’s not gods dropping from the sky, it’s gods toiling in the Earth. Think The Flash getting caught in a traffic jam or The Hulk filing a W-2."

This line made me think of "American Gods". Not the show, because I haven't seen it, but the book. If it's an apt comparison, that sounds fantastic.

If the worst burn on this by critics is that the superheroes aren't absurdly powerful and flying around with hammers, that's not a bad thing.

I'm glad I ignored the critics. The movie was just as good as Unbreakable and Split and did a fine job wrapping things up. I enjoyed it. The actor who plays all the personalities should win an award.

Box office numbers have been good. On par with both of those movies. While you might hope for better based on the good impressions from those movies, it's far from a flop and in fact is doing well, if not stellar.

James McAvoy is the actor. I haven't seen Glass, but his work in Split was impressive. I get the impression from the ads that he's a bit over the top in Glass, which is probably appropriate for the movie. He's much more subtle in Split (I believe), and in my opinion that makes it even more amazing.

I didn't feel he was over the top. It definitely felt like he was going through those personas at a much quicker pace, but that was more due to sharing screen time, and advancing the story.

I haven't seen it, but yeah, when I said "over the top" I just meant "bigger, faster, more expressive". More overt. In Split his character development (of all his personalities) is slower, quieter and less overt. Revealing all his personalities is pretty much the entirety of Split, so it makes sense to draw it out, let us see some of the more passive personalities first. In all the ads for Glass his personalities on display are "big".

So I don't mean "too much" I just mean "loud and proud".

It won the box office, but came in well under where it was predicted. I saw predictions at $75 million for the 4-day weekend, and it's projected to finish at $47 million.

I'm excited to see it, but it will be awhile. I don't think I'm available for a few weeks.

Never underestimate M. Night's ability to get in his own way.

Also, the fact that a non-Michael Bay directed Transformer's film is getting great reviews gives me hope for the future.

A future in which Michael Bay is only doing commercials.
