Video card suggestion
My video card died (again...but this time reseating it didn't help). I had an Asus Strix 970 which was fine for me. I'm mostly a console gamer these days, although I do get some of my rpg and most of my strategy fix via the PC.
Should I go with the newly released RTX 2060 at around 350 to 389 dollars (the one I'm looking at is 379), or go with a GTX 1060 at around 250 bucks? Supposedly, the new 2060s run at higher than 1070 TI speeds, which is nice. The ray tracing is a gimmick for the time being, and I doubt anything will come of it for quite a while...at which point my 2060 will most likely be obsolete. I just wonder if the power increase is worth 139 bucks.
My CPU is an i7 6700K 4.0Ghz, by the way.

A 2060 will stomp a 1060 pretty well. Id be more worried about a little future proofing and get more vram on it..thats probably the 2060 too. I haven't looked.
EDIT: A quick look at Newegg seems to show both have 6 gig memory. Shrug.

I'm just going to be playing Pong, so I should be good with either a 1060 or a 2060.

Don't neglect your CPU. You'll need a whole bunch of fast cores to really enjoy all the features.hepcat wrote:I'm just going to be playing Pong, so I should be good with either a 1060 or a 2060.

Re: Video card suggestion
What resolution do you want to play at? If 1080p a 1060 or an AMD 580 is fine. (The 580 is cheaper and generally outperforms the 1060 - and I am a guy who is biased towards nVidia. Tom's Hardware recommends the 580 over the 1060 for 1080p gaming.) At higher resolutions the 2060 makes more sense though anything less than a 2080 will mean dialing down settings for 4K.

Re: Video card suggestion
I'm leaning more towards the 2060 after some reviews. Specifically the Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2060 Gaming OC 6G. The reason is that the price difference between a 1060 and the 2060 is only about a hundred bucks, give or take 20 or 30 dollars. But the difference between a 2060 and a 1070 (which is what they're saying the 2060 performs at or better than) is pretty much nil (actually, most 1070s are more expensive).
So I think I'll order that in an attempt to "future proof" myself for a few years more than a 1070 would give me. Even if it's not a big proofing act.

And a serendipitous article appears... Is 6GB VRAM Enough for 1440p Gaming? Testing Usage with Nvidia's RTX 2060 - TechSpot
Today we're investigating claims that the new GeForce RTX 2060 is not a good buy because it only features 6GB VRAM capacity. The RTX 2060 offers performance similar to the GTX 1070 Ti, but that card packs an 8GB memory buffer, as did its non-Ti counterpart.

Re: Video card suggestion
Interesting. So 6 gigs should be fine for the next few years. By the time it isn’t, I’ll most likely be in the market for a new card anyway.

Re: Video card suggestion
Gigabyte RTX 2060 Gaming OC received and installed in less than 3 minutes. Worked great right out of the box. Now I just need to actually buy some games that will take advantage of all that power.
