Ford & Takata
Ford has announced plans to recall 953,000 vehicles worldwide—including 782,000 in the United States—amid fears that the passenger air bag inflator could explode and injure riders.

The recall is part of a larger recall of Takata airbag inflators, which can hurl shrapnel if they explode after deteriorating over time due to heat and humidity. Ford says it has not received any reports of injuries due to the defect, but worldwide 23 people have been killed by the inflators in other brands.

Ford is urging owners of the 2010 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX, the 2010 and 2011 Ford Ranger, the 2010 to 2012 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ, the 2010 and 2011 Mercury Milan, and the 2010 to 2014 Ford Mustang to set up appointments with dealers, who will replace the recalled part for free.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Takata
Auto components maker Key Safety Systems completed on [April 11th] a $1.6 billion deal to acquire air-bag maker Takata Corp, whose faulty inflators triggered the auto industry’s biggest recall and have been linked to at least 22 deaths around the world.
...
The combined companies would be renamed Joyson Safety Systems, after a consortium led by KSS’s Chinese parent company, Ningbo Joyson Electronic Corp, provided funding to acquire most of Takata’s operations, Joyson Safety Systems said in a statement. The new company will be based in Michigan.
...
The agreement on Wednesday marks the denouement in the drawn-out demise of family-run Takata. Founded in 1933 as a textiles company specializing in parachute manufacturing, Takata at its peak was the world’s No. 3 air-bag maker and produced one-third of all seatbelts used in vehicles sold globally.
...
The acquisition excludes Takata’s liabilities related to its faulty inflators, and leaves the Japanese company, restructured as part of U.S. and Japanese bankruptcy proceedings, responsible for those operations.

As part of its bankruptcy, Takata has been broken down into three parts: one holding its good assets, including operations for seat belts and other safety systems which were acquired by KSS; operations to manufacture replacement inflators until the global recall is complete; and an entity which will oversee claim payments and be wound down eventually.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Chocolate
Candy sold by a Kentucky company and QVC is being voluntarily recalled for fear that it might be contaminated with hepatitis A, according to a U.S. Food and Drug recall notice.

Bauer’s Candies' famous Modjeskas, individually-wrapped marshmallow candies dipped in chocolate or caramel, came in contact with a facility worker who tested positive for the contagious liver disease. Customers who purchased the gourmet candies after Nov. 14 should throw the candies away, according to the FDA.

The employee who tested positive for the virus worked at the company until Nov. 23. Anna Bauer, president of Bauer’s Candies, said in a statement that the company voluntarily discarded all in-house candy, sanitized equipment and began working with federal state agencies after learning of the possible contamination. She said no candy products made after Nov. 25 were affected.

The FDA says the risk of contracting hepatitis from the candies is low, but advises customers who ate the recalled candy contact their doctor to see if they need medication to prevent a possible infection.

Hyundai & Kia
Despite a government shutdown, Hyundai and Kia are moving ahead with a recall of about 168,000 vehicles to fix a fuel pipe problem that can cause engine fires. The problem stems from improper repairs during previous recalls for engine failures.

The affiliated Korean automakers have been dogged by fire and engine failure complaints from across the nation. They're both under investigation by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which has been trying to figure out whether initial recalls covered enough vehicles. But the agency is mostly closed due to the shutdown.

In addition to the recall, each automaker says it will do a "product improvement campaign" covering a total of 3.7 million vehicles to install software that will alert drivers of possible engine failures and send the cars into a reduced-speed "limp" mode if problems are detected.
...
Hyundai and Kia started recalling 1.7 million vehicles in 2015 — about 618,000 of which are Kias — because manufacturing debris can restrict oil flow to connecting rod bearings. That can cause bearings in 2-liter and 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines to wear and fail. The problem can also cause fires. The repair is an expensive engine block replacement.

Now the companies are acknowledging that the engine replacements may not have been properly done in all cases by dealers. A Kia statement says the high-pressure fuel pipe may have been damaged, misaligned or improperly tightened while the engines were being replaced under recall. That can allow fuel to leak and hit hot engine parts, causing fires.
...
The fuel injector pipe recall covers some 2011 through 2014 Kia Optima cars, 2012 through 2014 Sorrento SUVs, and 2011 through 2013 Sportage SUVs, all with 2-liter and 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines. Also covered are many 2011 to 2014 Hyundai Sonata cars and 2013 and 2014 Santa Fe Sport SUVs.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

The fruit was distributed in stores including Walmart, Costco, Aldi, Fairway, Market Basket, and Hannaford.
...

The peaches, nectarines, and plums sold at Aldi are packaged in a 2-pound bag with the brand Rio Duero. The nectarines sold at Costco are packaged in a 4-pound plastic clamshell with the brand Rio Duero.

Infant liquid ibuprofen
The recall of an infant pain reliever has been expanded over worries that the over-the-counter medication may contain dangerously high concentrations of the drug.

On Thursday, the drug maker Tris-Pharma said that additional lots of Infants' Ibuprofen Concentrated Oral Suspension, USP (NSAID) 50 mg per 1.25 mL — sold in 0.5 oz. bottles at Wal-Mart, CVS Pharmacy and Family Dollar Services — may have higher concentrations of ibuprofen than what’s on the label.

Routine tests found that some units contained 10 percent more ibuprofen than specified levels. Normal levels per bottle are 50 mg of ibuprofen per 1.25ml.

“Studies have shown that safety issues or toxicity is generally accepted to be a concern in infants at doses in excess of 700 percent of the recommended dose. To date, no serious adverse events have been reported related to this recall,” the company said.

The FDA, which monitors drugs in the U.S. said infants already susceptible to the adverse effects of ibuprofen may be at a slightly higher risk if they receive medication from an impacted bottle, in a statement issued Wednesday.
...
The original recall last November was for three batches of of the ibuprofen drops. The new recall includes three more batches.
...
Walmart sells the recalled product under the “Equate” label and the National Drug Code (NDC) 49035-125-23; the products being withdrawn have the lot numbers 00717005A, 00717009A, 00717015A and 00717024A on their label.

CVS offers it under the “CVS Health” label, with the recalled products bearing the NCD number 59779-925-23 and the lot numbers 4718, 00717006A and 00717024A.

At Family Dollar, it's sold under the “Family Wellness” label with the NCD 55319-250-23 and lot number 00717024A.

H-E-B
The U.S.D.A. issued a recall for 2,100 pounds of chicken products for incorrect labeling and undeclared allergens on Saturday.

The department has recalled the products from Taylor Farms, a company out of Dallas, because labels that are supposed to be ready-to-eat "HEB Roasted Spaghetti Squash with Alfredo and Chicken" are labeled as "Chile Relleno." The products also contain wheat, which is a known allergen, and is not listed on the product's label.

With all the rubber in the chicken when I saw the car recall I thought maybe there was chicken found in them.

Whats with all the rubber in chicken? You'd think they'd only use machinery made of stuff that can be detected.

Chicken nuggets are made from meat slurry. The rubber comes from gaskets and seals breaking down in the injectors. They're supposed to be replaced before they fail as routine maintenance.

Ford
Ford is issuing three recalls covering about 1.5 million Ford and Lincoln vehicles, citing an unintended downshift to first gear in certain F-150 pickups that's caused at least five accidents, among other safety concerns, the company said Wednesday.
...
Ford is issuing a safety recall on select 2011 to 2013 Ford F-150 vehicles with six-speed automatic transmissions, 2017 to 2019 Lincoln Continental vehicles, and select 2019 Ford Mustang, Lincoln Nautilus and Lincoln Navigator vehicles.

The roughly 1.48 million F-150 trucks have a defect that can cause the truck to temporarily downshift into first gear. Ford is aware of five reports of accidents, including one report of "whiplash" potentially related to this condition.

About 27,000 Lincoln Continental vehicles may have a problem with silicon contamination in the door latch, which can prevent it from fully engaging. This means the door could open while driving. Ford is not aware of any accidents connected to this recall.

About 4,200 Ford Mustang, Lincoln Nautilus and Lincoln Navigator vehicles may have a defect that causes the instrument cluster to be blank while the video starts up. Ford is not aware of any of any accidents connected to this recall either.

Honda
With a simplified trim range, above the average fuel efficiency, and a five-star overall vehicle safety score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Honda Ridgeline had a strong 2018 with more than 30,500 units delivered to customers. In fact, 2018 and 2017 were the truck’s two best-selling years in the last decade which is fantastic news for the Japanese automaker.

Not everything is perfect, however, as the company will have to inspect 106,683 examples of the pickup for a potential fire risk. This might sound like a pretty common service recall in the industry, but the reason for it this time is rather unusual. NHTSA says that exposure to acids, including car wash soaps, may result in the fuel pump feet port cracking, thus increasing the risk of fire.

Honda is already talking to its dealers and will be notifying owners of affected vehicles soon. Ridgelines from model years 2017, 2018, and 2019 are affected, and Honda promises, if necessary, to install a new fuel pump cover to protect the pump from acids. The recall is scheduled to begin on March 7 and owners are advised to contact Honda for more details. All fixes will be free of charge.

Subaru
Subaru is recalling 1.3 million vehicles in the U.S. because chemicals used in everyday products -- including shampoo -- could prevent the brake lights from illuminating properly.

The recall covers certain 2014 to 2016 Forester, 2008 through 2016 Impreza and 2013 through 2017 Crosstrek vehicles.
...
Subaru says it's gotten 33 reports of problems in the U.S. related to the recall, which was announced late last week. According to the company, consumer products containing silicone -- like shampoo, fabric softener or nail polish -- can emit a gas that can seep into the brake lamp switch and cut off the electrical contact. That can stop the rear brake lights from working but brakes will still function, the company said.

Subaru, Tesla, BMW, Volkswagen, Daimler Vans, Mercedes and Ferrari are recalling about 1.7 million vehicles to replace potentially deadly air bag inflators made by Takata Corp. of Japan.
...
In the latest round, Subaru is recalling 826,144 vehicles, including various Forester, Legacy and Outback models from 2010 to 2014. Mercedes is recalling 288,779 vehicles from model years 2010 to 2017. Volkswagen is recalling 119,394 vehicles, including Audi and Passat models from 2015 to 2017. BMW is recalling 266,044 vehicles from 2000 to 2004 model years and the 2007 to 2015 model years.

The recalls also include 159,689 vehicles from Daimler Vans spanning model years 2015 to 2017. Tesla is recalling 68,763 Model S vehicles from 2014 to 2016 and Ferrari is recalling 11,176 vehicles of various models ranging from 2014 to 2018 model years.
Just took my in-laws' Subaru in to get this fixed.

I had the day off (spring break), so I just went to a coffee shop and relaxed. They told me to expect three hours but took only two, so it was easy.

Kiddie cosmetics
The Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday it has confirmed the presence of asbestos in makeup products from tween retailers Claire's and Justice first reported in 2017.
...
Three products from Claire's and one from Justice were found to contain asbestos, the FDA said. FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said Claire's has refused the agency's request to recall those three products.

Claire's did not immediately return a request for comment. The retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last year.

Rick Locker, a product safety lawyer who represents retailers and manufacturers, says Chapter 11 allows companies to avoid liability, but "many bankrupt companies do work with regulators and still continue to honor recalls.”

The proceedings do stop all civil litigation, so consumers wouldn’t be able to sue the company over the presence of asbestos.

In the case of Claire’s, Locker said, it will be up to the bankruptcy judge to determine what Claire’s response can be.

The FDA does not have the authority to recall cosmetics, as it does with food and drugs. Cosmetics manufacturers are not required to test their products for safety.

The FDA instead issued a warning to consumers not to use Claire’s Eye Shadows batch No./lot No. 08/17, Claire’s Compact Powder batch No./lot No.: 07/15 or Claire’s Contour Palette batch No./lot No. 04/17.

All suspect Justice products, including one that tested positive for asbestos, were recalled in 2017.

We went to Claire's a lot until the mid 90s. It had stuff my wife loved and Trolls that we collected. But it turned all kiddie sometime after that and we gave up. I think we went maybe twice since the mid 90s and didn't care for it either go. Not surprised they are bankrupt.

Takata (Honda)
A type of Takata air bag inflator once thought to be safe has now come under scrutiny after a crash and explosion in Maryland injured the driver of an older Honda minivan.

The incident forced Honda on Tuesday to recall about 1.2 million vehicles in North and Central America from the 2001 to 2016 model years that were not included in the massive string of Takata recalls for air bags that can hurl shrapnel into the passenger compartment.
...
The recall covers certain Honda and Acura models largely in the U.S. and Canada. Included are the 2001 to 2007 and 2009 Honda Accord, the 2001 to 2005 Civic, the 2002 to 2007 and 2010 and 2011 CR-V, the 2003 to 2011 Element, the 2007 Fit, the 2002 to 2004 Odyssey, the 2003 to 2008 Pilot, and the 2006 to 2014 Ridgeline pickup. Also included are certain 2003 Acura 3.2CL cars, as well as the 2013 to 2016 ILX, the 2003 to 2006 MDX, the 2007 to 2016 RDX, the 2002 to 2003 3.2TL, the 2004 to 2006 and 2009 to 2014 TL, and the 2010 to 2013 ZDX.

NHTSA, the government's highway safety regulator, issued a statement Tuesday acknowledging the recall and saying that not all vehicles that received replacement air bag inflators are affected by the recall. The agency urged owners to check for open recalls by keying in their 17-digit vehicle identification number on the NHTSA website www.nhtsa.gov/recalls .

Fiat Chrysler haunted by the ghost of Volkswagen.
Fiat Chrysler said a recall of more than 800,000 vehicles reported earlier Wednesday by Reuters was the result of routine testing under new emissions guidelines adopted by the Environmental Protection Agency
...
The EPA said the recall was the result of “in-use emissions investigations conducted by EPA and in-use testing conducted by FCA as required by EPA regulations.”

Vehicles affected include 2011-2016 model years of the Dodge Journey crossover, 2011-2014 Chrysler 200 and Dodge Avenger sedans, 2011-2016 Jeep Compass SUVs, and 2011-2012 Dodge Caliber hatchbacks.

“We are advised that today’s EPA announcement reflects a new policy for announcing routine emissions recalls,” Fiat Chrysler said in a statement. “This campaign has no safety implications. Nor are there any associated fines. This issue was discovered by FCA during routine in-use emissions testing and reported to the agency. We began contacting affected customers last month to advise them of the needed repairs, which will be provided at no charge.”

HP batteries
HP’s latest battery woes actually stem back to a recall covering 50,000 affected units first issued in January 2018, which was then expanded earlier this year to include another 78,500 or so at-risk systems and battery accessories. Meanwhile, on the most recent recall alert posted by the CPSC on March 12th, a note at the top of the CPSC website says “This recall expansion was previously announced independently on January 17, 2019 by the firm due to US government furlough.”

HP’s laptop battery recall primarily affects a number of the company’s commercial notebooks including various HP ProBooks and HP ZBook workstations, though there are a few consumer laptops mixed in there such as the 11-inch HP Pavilion x360 and HP Envy m6. Some recalled batteries were also sold as accessories or replacement batteries for existing laptops for systems such as the HP Envy 15 and assorted HP Mobile Thin Clients.

So far, the CPSC says HP has received eight new reports of these faulty battery overheating, melting, and charring, with one instance of a recalled battery causing minor injury.

Consumers with laptop batteries who think they might be subject to recall are asked to go to this website and download HP’s Battery Validation tool to check if their battery needs to be replaced, as some of the systems affected by the recall have internal batteries that are not user replaceable.

Butterball
Butterball, LLC. officials on Wednesday, March 13 announced the recall of approximately 78,164 pounds of raw ground turkey products that may be contaminated with salmonella.

According to officials with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), the prepacked raw ground turkey was produced on July 7, 2018.
...
FSIS and public health partners, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Wisconsin Department of Health Services and Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, have been investigating a multistate outbreak of “salmonella Schwarzengrund” illnesses involving five case patients from two states.

Wisconsin collected three intact Butterball brand ground turkey samples from a residence where four of the case patients live.
So if you have any turkey that's been sitting around for nine months, you should probably throw it away.

Dog food
Eight more varieties of canned dog food are being recalled for potentially toxic levels of vitamin D, Hill's Pet Nutrition announced Wednesday.

The company voluntarily recalled 25 products for the same concern earlier this year. The number of dog food affected now totals 33. Varieties of the company's canned Prescription Diet and Science Diet foods, sold and recommended at a variety of veterinarian offices across the nation, were affected.

In a letter to veterinarians, Hill's said a review of its products determined the issue was isolated to a vitamin premix used in its canned dog foods that is limited to specific production lots.

None of Hill's dry dog foods, cat foods or treats were affected, according to the company.

Avocados:
California-grown avocados sold in bulk to retail stores in six states by the Henry Avocado Corporation are being recalled due to potential contamination with the bacterium listeria monocytogenes, the company announced on Saturday.
"Henry Avocado is issuing this voluntary recall out of an abundance of caution due to positive test results on environmental samples taken during a routine government inspection at its California packing facility," reads the company's statement. There have been no reported illnesses associated with the recall at this time.

Fisher Price
Fisher-Price recalled nearly 5 million infant sleepers on Friday, after more than 30 babies died in them over a 10-year period.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said anyone who bought a Fisher-Price Rock 'n Play sleeper should stop using it right away and contact Fisher-Price for a refund or voucher. The sleepers, a soft cradle that vibrates, are used to put babies to sleep.

Fisher-Price and the CPSC did not specify how the infants died, but said the deaths occurred after the babies rolled over from their backs to their stomachs or sides while unrestrained. In an article this week, Consumer Reports found that some of the infants died from suffocation.
