[News] California Earthquakes

Post by Isgrimnur »

LA Times
A 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck Southern California on Friday night, the second in less than two days.

The quake was centered near Ridgecrest, location of the July 4th 6.4 magnitude temblor that was the largest in nearly 20 years.

That quake caused minor damage and injuries around the epicenter.

This quake was much larger.

When Thursday’s quake hit, scientists had warned that it could lead to a larger quake. Ridgecrest had been rattled by numerous aftershocks over the last day, including a 5.4 magnitude temblor on Friday morning.

This quake was larger than the destructive 1994 Northridge quake, which measured 6.6 magnitude. But that temblor occurred in an urban area, while this week’s huge quakes occurred 100 miles from L.A.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

That was not fun. I was in Burbank and it seemed never ending.

Felt it here as a slow burn. It was near the China Lake Naval Air Station.

I grew up in Ridgecrest and have been getting my parent's house ready to sell. I have no idea what two major earthquakes back to back have done to it. :/

Had to get a JPL account for work a few years ago. Now I'm getting text and email JPL alerts about the earthquakes. Hope everyone stays safe out there!

As TS Garp would say, it's pre-disastered!

As with the one on the 4th, there was a brief discussion about getting off the couch. :coffee:

Draz - you had a brief discussion about getting off the couch? You discussed this with the cats? :)

I'm not judging, if I was alone with my cat, I probably would.

On a more serious note, hope everyone and their friends & families are safe.

GB - g'luck w/ the house. Hopefully it's survived with no significant issues.

We felt both of them, and in the last 59 years I bet I have only felt 4-5 previous to that. These reminded me of the Coalinga earthquake from the 80's. I was outside and didn't feel the SF quake in 89 (?) and didn't feel the Northridge one from the 80's either. These were long, slow rocking quakes. Even 200+ miles away they were pretty impressive.

The World Series Of Poker Main Event Day 1c was in progress at the time. It probably generated the only bad beat story worthy of attention.

Thankfully its behind us.

I didn't care for this, because they were slow rollers. The type where you doubted yourself and made you think you were having a dizzy spell. The unnevering part is for the next 2 hours I could see a chandelier sway in my house and you knew it was from the aftershocks. For the next 2 hours after the quake there was about a quake a minute raning from 2.0 (cant feel em)-4.0 (oh, just barely felt it) I am about 200 miles away am guessing. Even that far away I still was feeling it. Will never get use to that feeling. Dont care for it. At least no mass casualties, just property damage.

I guess being as far away as I am we only felt the two big ones and not the aftershocks. I am glad about that.

heh yeah. The first one I was playing Path of Exile and at first I thought it was just the screen shake. Then I started getting motion sick and it felt like it would never end. The second one I was watching Spiderman, and it was kind of interesting about 10-20 people seemed panicky and left the theater. I was like, uhh, where do you think you are going and I heard other people saying there's no place safer. I suppose if there were speakers mounted on the ceiling maybe they could fall and hit you on the head, but I'm pretty sure this theater doesn't have any speakers above. Anyway, about 5 minutes later they filtered their way back in.

I'm in Ridgecrest right now and just got a 3.something aftershock. It's interesting, at least. Thankfully the house seems more or less ok.

Agreed. It can be seen with high-power cameras from satellites.
