Madmarcus wrote: Sun Apr 28, 2019 10:03 pm I'm not one of the regulars in this thread so hopefully this isn't too obnoxious of a brag but I'm down below 185 without even trying!

For years I was between 190-195. Too heavy but not so heavy that I cared about it. But it had been creeping up and my last two annual physicals were just over 200. I generally eat fairly healthy when we are cooking and I eat out infrequently enough that it isn't a problem. The problem is that I tend to eat way to much if someone puts out a sweets - the church coffee hour, the cake in the teacher's lounge, sampling all the deserts at a Christmas get together, and so forth.

The solution turned out to be moving to Korea. No more church coffee hours. This school has BBQs and the like for the expat staff but there is no culture of random food in the teacher's lounge or deserts at the BBQ because baking is expensive and difficult here. Flying to the US is expensive so we weren't around for family feasts in Nov. and Dec. Plus the Korean love of soup matches up well with my love of soup so when we do eat out I'm filling up on water.

At 5'8" I'm still too heavy but it is still nice.
I'm in the same height/weight class as you and would also be happy to get below 185 again. I look and feel my best around 175-180, but have been getting dangerously close to my all-time high of 203. I think 185 is a realistic goal for this year.

This month is making a bid for the rainiest April ever, so I'm still housebound most mornings. Still hoping this weather pattern will break and I can get back to wearing out shoes next week.

Just wanted to update my mileage. After a record-rainy April, May had 24 precipitation days (out of 31), which didn't set any records but did keep me inside most of the month. I am cautiously optimistic that June will allow me to start racking up miles again.

 I hope my weight will reverse direction pretty soon -- it usually does over the summer -- but mostly I'm using this thread to tally up my mileage (and motivate me to walk on days when I'd rather not). I need to average at least 12 miles per week through September.

Last update was April, so time for another check-in:

I'm down to 191.5, which is a solid 10 pound loss from my high in December. It still fluctuates up and down a bit, but it's safe to say I've finally broken through the 195 barrier.

My next goal is 185, which is going to take some better eating habits which I've begun in earnest. It's also going to take getting my butt back on the cardio circuit. I have let the Spartan stuff essentially replace my running routine, but now I feel like I'm ready to do both.

Speaking of the Spartan stuff, I've continued my Saturday workouts and weekly homeworks (which continue to kick my ass). However, I've seen solid results - not just in the weight department, but in overall strength and fitness as well. Becoming more comfortable with the gym, my peers, and the trainers has been a HUGE confidence boost and has encouraged me to stick with it. I haven't signed up for any more races this year since the only other close one is on my wife's birthday, but my goal is to keep regular with all the workouts and hit the race circuit hard next year. I'd love to hit my Trifecta (Sprint/Super/Beast) next year, but I've still got a ways to go.

Getting in actual "good shape" is one of the toughest things I've ever attempted. It's a slow, torturous bitch, and if you set your sights off it for just a moment the world will do everything in its power to erode your progress.

I don't have any actual weight loss to report (I'm not really keeping track of that right now for reasons I'll get into.)

I've tried working out so many times. I hate it. It bores me so much. The longest I've ever managed was four consecutive weeks.

This time I invested in a set of wireless earbuds and an audible subscription to have something to keep my mind busy while I'm performing a super simple repetitive task hundreds of times. My workout involves a set of planks, followed by a stint on my stationary bike. It's the only equipment I have, and it's doing the job. I started at low intensity. My bike tracks pulse and adjusts the resistance to keep my heart rate in a target zone. I started at 20 minutes, 60-70%. After a week, 25 minutes. A couple weeks later, 70-80%. A week after that, 30 minutes, 70-80% (which is 'ideal'.) I haven't missed a single workout in over three months, five days a week. My record (set today) is 10.2 miles in 30 minutes, and 401 calories burned. That's not half bad. It's enough that I've begun to see the results during the rest of my day, too. Standing up from the couch is just... standing up. Not pushing myself up. Bringing the groceries up doesn't wind me anymore. I sleep better. My back hurts less.
I have a lot more energy.

At the same time, I've been seriously reducing my meat intake. Red and cured meats are maybe once a month. Other meats are maybe once or twice per week. The rest is all meat 'alternatives', some of which I've come to really appreciate. I avoid cheese as well. I've only drunk skim milk for probably 20 years. I don't drink sugared drinks, and only have desert maybe once a week or so. I'm also tracking my caloric intake with the MyFitnessPal app (and making sure I get enough protein, fiber and miscellaneous nutrients at the same time.) I set it to 1800 calories per day, which I adjust for the calories burned on the bike. I have a 'splurge' day once a week or so, although I don't go to overboard then, either. I just don't want as much as I used to.

I haven't lost much weight, though. I can feel the difference from day to day, and I'm going from sitting 16 hours a day (sleeping the rest) for 18 years to 10 miles of biking plus planks, so I figure that I'm building a lot of muscle in my legs (which I can feel.) On the scale? Net loss over three months is ~8 pounds. I'm hoping that as the muscle catches up with the workout, the numbers will start to fall.

Still, I'm happy with the effort I've put in.

This thread just won't go away will it? LOL I haven't lost anything, but I think I'm eating a bit healthier at least. Way less soda, less red meat, less carbs. I made spaghetti with zucchini noodles courtesy of this nifty device I bought brand new at Goodwill for $1.49

Switching from red meat to chicken and pork? Yeah, about that....

It's only one small study, so not gospel. More research is called for.

Which is why I switched to mostly 'no meat' to begin with, although you'll still generally get more saturated fat from red meat.

Hi 190 this morning, which is 12 pounds down from peak high in December, and 8 pounds down from my typical plateau. Very encouraging.

Next goal is 185.

Crushed the scale at 208.2 the other day, still, it's down from the carnage I created a few weeks ago at the doctor's office when I clocked in at 211.7. The long, inactive winter was very, very bad for my blood sugar and I was given 3 months to move in the right direction or face a doubling of meds, the precursor to having to take insulin shots. Aside from walking, though, it's still not possible to fit in anything approaching cardio. Bike has not yet left the garage this year, and trying to bike with the kids would be like those jet fighters trying to intercept Krusty flying the Wright Brother's plane on The Simpsons. I have to walk slow so my daughter can keep up on her bike.

Started running again about a month ago. Slow going as I'm in my early fifties now and my knees just ain't what they used to be. But something needs to be done. During my last physical, my doctor decided to be a wise ass again and started reading off weights from my medical history as if they were a greatest hits list. I think the only reason I stick with him is because his last name is "Brown" and he still doesn't seem to know why I chuckle every time I call him "Doc Brown".

15 weeks. This, however, is going to be a hell week for me. I'm trying to keep myself honest, and I want some feedback:

If I put in enough walking (the equivalent in steps to my workout, calculated at about 6,000 steps based on a formula I found), is it fair to count that as my workout for the day, or am I just making lame-ass excuses to be lazy?

I'm going to be moving around a lot the next few days, and it would help to skip the workout one day, but I don't want to let myself start making excuses.

I'm a tad biased, since I still walk almost daily since I invented it 15 years ago...but power-walking is nearly the best aerobic exercise you can do. Slower than running, sure, but low-impact is friendlier to aging knees and hips. I can't quite sustain 4 mph, but I routinely do 16-minute miles for a full hour. IDK how many steps that is but I'd guess 3 miles is around 6000. Tomorrow's update will record that I covered more than 20 miles last week.

To clarify, I've got several very busy days this week, and I expect to be pressed for time and exhausted. I'm trying to figure out whether it is legitimate to count one of those days of activity as a workout and give myself a breather.

Lowest reading of the year. Pushing to break 190 by the end of the month. Maybe even next week, if the stars align.

Going on vacation the second half of this week means restaurant eating for 4 days. I'll be happy if I can just avoid backsliding next week.

Hard to say if my mini-vacation did any damage or not. Yesterday's weigh-in was 1.5 lb higher than today's. Before I left, I had unofficially broken through the 190 barrier. Probably no lasting effect, at least; I should see the 180s again next week.

I think I feel a tiny bit thinner, I'm not going to jinx it by getting on the scale.
Technically, he shouldn't be here.

The 190 barrier is stubborn.

Now we're getting somewhere. Down 6.8 from my highest reading.

Quick update:

Hit 188, which is a low for the year and 2 pounds down from mid-June.

I'm sitting at roughly 12 pound loss from the start of the Spartan workout stuff, and that's with not greatly changing my eating habits. Those workouts continue to kick my ass every week, but it's encouraging to see the results.

The big challenge will be to maintain during the upcoming fall/winter months, which is usually where I undo all my past progress. Just have to keep focusing on consistency.
