Thoughts on the Trea Turner interference call? I get the general sense that the umpire was technically correct (or within the bounds of the rules) in making the call, but kind of a bullshit call to potentially decide a World Series that way. Though fortunately it didn't.

Also I enjoyed the irony of Alex Rodriguez (in the postgame show) getting passionate about somebody getting called out for interference at first base in the playoffs.
I thought it was bullshit call. When you are a right handed batter, to get outside the lines means you cannot take a straight line for the base. He lined himself up at the last second and hit the center of the bag. Not sure what he could have done differently. If he had been outside the lines and came back to the center of the bag I think the same thing would have happened.
Also it was a pretty shitty throw. Oh well, the cosmic balance evened out eventually.
I watched and by rule it's likely the right call as he was inside the baseline the entire time. Would most people actually MAKE that call? No probably not... They won so I guess it doesn't matter.

It was mostly just weird optics on that play. The runner was already past the fielder when his glove came off. One of the few occasions where if he dives into first he would have probably been called safe.

I flipped over to the Lakers game while they were still debating the call. When I came back I saw the score at 5-2 and at first thought they must have called him safe.

It was the runner's leg that took the glove off. Though whether the ball was both catchable and in range for an out is less clear

How so? Their lottery system weighted the worst performing team, so they had the highest chance of getting the top pick. Did they change this system? Are they still using cold envelopes for the team they really want to win the top pick? :ninja:

They debated it for a long time on replay. I'm guessing they didn't want to make the call, but it was the right one.

They weren't debating the call (by rule that call was unreviewable). The Nationals wanted to lodge an official protest, so they were talking to MLB about whether the Nationals *could* file an official protest over something that was ultimately an umpire judgment call (answer: no).

Also - what was really stupid (but apparently following the rules) was that the Nationals runner who was on first had to go back to first, even though he was already at second when the 'interference' happened. Even if you assume that the first baseman would have caught the ball and gotten Turner out, the other runner would clearly have gotten to second, so it seems ridiculous to make him go back to first.

MLB
Baseball Rule 5.09(a)(11) states:

A batter is out when: In running the last half of the distance from home base to first base, while the ball is being fielded to first base, he runs outside (to the right of) the three-foot line, or inside (to the left of) the foul line, and in the umpire’s judgment in so doing interferes with the fielder taking the throw at first base, in which case the ball is dead; except that he may run outside (to the right of) the three-foot line or inside (to the left of) the foul line to avoid a fielder attempting to field a batted ball.
Dead Ball
The ruling of a dead ball halts the game and no plays can legally occur until the umpire resumes the game, though baserunners can advance as the result of acts that occurred while the ball was live.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

So shouldn't the Nationals runner (who started at first) stay at second? I'm sure he made it to second before the interference call. But the announcers were saying that the rules required the runner to go back to where he was when the pitch was thrown.

Baseball Rules Academy
If the umpire declares the batter, batter-runner, or a runner out for interference, all other runners shall return to the last base that was in the judgment of the umpire, legally touched at the time of the interference, unless otherwise provided by these rules. (Definition of Terms (Interference))

In the event the batter-runner has not reached first base, all runners shall return to the base last occupied at the time of the pitch;

Do you ever wonder what goes through an umpire's head when he's about to make a call like that?

Should I really call interference like this in the World Series?

Sort of like when Jim Joyce called Jason Donald safe to ruin Galarraga's perfect game.

I really hope that guy was safe.

I think that's exactly what happened but the fact that the runner's thigh popped the glove off tied his hands.
By running inside the line then veering right at the last second but clipping the baseman's glove, the runner took a more judgment call and made it more concrete. I don't know much about baseball but knocking off someones glove seems like interference. Other wise why don't runners still tackle each other, or at least clip the baseman on every close call.

A. This umpire is HORRIBLE
B. Max isn't making it past 6
C. Nats look dead

But it's a 1 run game so obviously they are very much in it. I would love to see the Nats win, but don't really super care. At least it's not the Yanks.

One key strikeout was a good 6 inches inside the plate if not more. It's ridiculous. Nats won fair and square but that shouldn't happen.

Yeah, usually when a disputed balls / strikes call happens they show the replay and I'm like "well, maybe a bad call, but that was borderline". There were a lot of calls this Series where it was like "ok I honestly can't understand the call - that wasn't even close."

I think my favorite was actually from the ALCS, when the home plate umpire called a foul tip on a ball that passed a good six inches or so away from Gary Sanchez's bat, and then called him out on a strike three that was six inches off the plate.

The talk seems to be he will become a Yankee. I hope not. I would love him as a Dodger but as long as he doesn't become a Yankee I am fine.

I see the Yankees didn't take the option on Encarnacion so he is a free agent now.

One other thing we wondered about. Rendon has the same pre-pitch batting stance/style as Justin Turner. I remember seing another player using that towards the end of the season. Is some coach teaching that? It is an unusual backwards leaning move before the pitch is thrown.

It would make sense for him to become a Yankee (unfortunately), but the good news is that Hal Steinbrenner is a cheapskate, so the Yankees probably aren't going to open a bank vault for him. Which means that there should be a fair number of teams in contention for his services. And the Dodgers seem fairly profligate, so they probably have a decent shot.

The Red Sox should be trying to get him as well, but austerity seems to be the word of the day there too going forward, so probably not.

The Seattle Mariners are the only current Major League Baseball franchise to have never appeared in a World Series; the San Diego Padres, Colorado Rockies, Texas Rangers, Tampa Bay Rays, and Milwaukee Brewers have all played in the Series but have never won.

The Dodgers could afford him but I don't know if they'll go for him. They might, perhaps it could FINALLY be obvious that Kershaw is not going to win them a world series.
