Now gather around children as I continue retelling the adventures of that plucky, brave crew of the Sack Time Sally...

Waves of fighters pounce on the formation. Three Me 109s approach from 10:30 but a friendly fighter pounces on one of the bandits in return leaving two fighters continuing their attack. Raydude, Daehawk fire at the Me 109 approaching from 10:30 level and score solid hits on the fuselage. The fighter begins to arc towards the ground and the pilot bails out. Gbasden fires at the fighter at 10:30 low, hitting the left wing and possibly damaging its gun. The bandit misses the bomber and it flies off.

Three fighters from the next wave attack from 12:00 and 3:00. One fighter peels off, engaged with one of our escorts. A Fw 190 ace flies at the bomber from 12:00 level. Raydude and Daehawk fire and the tail is sheared off by the fire. Amazingly, the pilot is able to bail out as it plummets towards the ground. Another Fw 190 flies in from 3:00 low. Gbasden scores a hit but causes no damage while the fighter fires back and misses. The fighter curves away from the Sally and searches for another target. Eventually the skies clear and the formation flies on.

As the bombers make their way towards Austria the planes take advantage of the clear skies and tighten up the formation, hoping to be more effective against further attacks.

Nice random event=Tight Formation. You get a favorable DRM when rolling for how many waves will attack the formation and because it's a tighter group of bombers there's also a favorable DRM when rolling on the bomb run table.

Other than the initial attack, the bombers fly over Yugoslavia unimpeded and they also don't encounter fighters over Hungary. There's some cloud cover as they cross into Austria and fighters make an appearance.

A pair of Fw 190s attack from 12:00 level and 1:30 low but our little friends are really earning their pay today as they drive off one of the bandits. The other one is destroyed by Raydude's and Daehawk's combined fire as the pilot bails out and floats towards the ground. Zenn7 readies his twin guns but is horrified that one of the guns is jammed due to ice and he frantically works to clear it before another wave attacks. There is a pause in fighter attacks as the planes approach the aircraft factory and fly into the flak box. Puffs of smoke surround the bombers and occasionally they hear the sound of shrapnel hitting the plane like hail. Isgrimnur is now in control of the bomber as the Sally flies toward the release point. Some clouds have obscured the factory but hopefully the tighter formation will help their accuracy. The lead bomber drops his bombs and Isgrimnur releases the Sally's payload. NickAragua steers the bomber away from the target as the formation hightails it for home. The flak has gone silent which only means that bandits are going to engage the bombers...

So not as nice a random event. It was a "extreme cold, all gunners check if guns have frozen" which was an issue at 20,000 feet. Hopefully, Zenn7 will make the appropriate dice roll and unjam his gun. Lucky for him he's manning a twin gun and only one gun was jammed. Also having "fair" fighter escort coverage vs the "poor" coverage in the last mission really makes an impact on the bandit attacks.

Man, I thought we got two updates, but it turns out to have just been an instant replay.

Hey Isgrimnur, did we hit our target this time? Hope I didn't shake the plane too much.

You try to piss on that gun, we're trading seats before you start (welcome to the dual guns of piss-on!)

AND DON'T SEND THE GREMLIN EITHER!

<And I thought it was bad when the pilot said he got his license out a cracker-jack box... this engineer doesn't even seem to be THAT qualified...>

Actually, as cold as it is up here, if he pulled it out and tried, wouldn't it freeze before it got too far out? He could end up stuck there by his... crosshairs...

Strap in boys...

Three Fw 190s approach the Sally from 9:00 high, 12:00 high and 3:00 high. Dbt lands a solid hit on his bandit and the fighter splits in half with the broken pieces falling to the ground. Raydude and Daehawk also score hits on their bandit but the damage is minimal and the fighter fires but misses. As the Fw 190 passes behind the Sally, Zenn7 is able to unjam his gun and hits the plane which explodes in midair. TheMix and his bandit trade shots but both miss each other and the fighter flies away.

The formation continues it's journey home but the skies over Austria seem to be filled with fighters as a fresh wave pounces on the bombers. This time three Fw 190s attack from 10:30 high, 12:00 high and 1:30 high. Daehawk and Dbt fire at the 10:30 high fighter and the right wing is hit, damaging the plane's gun. The bandit fires its remaining guns but misses, arcing away towards a different target. Raydude sends a stream of tracers towards the ace at 12:00 and lands a solid hit on the fuselage, causing the plane to go into an uncontrollable spin and explode. TheMix misses his bandit and the fighter also misses, passing the Sally and hoping for better luck with a different bomber.

As more fighters press their attack on the bombers, a Me 109 dives at the Sally from 12:00 high. Raydude and Daehawk fire and bullets punch holes in the cockpit and the pilot who slumps over, causing the plane to dive into the earth. Eventually the bomber formation leaves Austria, a few planes short, and crosses into Hungary.

Unfortunately, their luck doesn't change as more fighters fly at the formation to challenge the bombers. Three Me 109s fly at the Sally from 12:00 while a fourth approaches from 10:30 level. With the number of fighters attacking the Sally, no gunners are able to get a bead on the fighter at 10:30 but the bandit misses the bomber and dives at a new target. Daehawk is able to destroy his target at 12:00 level as it explodes after being struck in the fuselage. Raydude misses his target but the ace misses in turn and goes searching for new prey. Gbasden is able to land some solid hits on his target at 12:00 low. But the bandit is undeterred and rakes the Sally with gunfire, scoring multiple hits. Shrapnel flies around the bomb bay, hitting one of the fuel tanks but it self seals and no fire or leakage occurs. The right wing and left wing is peppered with holes and the landing gear on the right wing takes a critical hit and it's not certain that the Sally will be able to use it to land. In the flight deck where NickAragua and Smoove are, shell fragments and shrapnel fly through the compartment and there's a loud bang but no explosion as NickAragua's oxygen tank gets a large hole punched through it. Smoove acts quickly to get a portable tank connected to NickAragua's mask while he tries to maintain control of the Sally. NickAragua knows that Smoove will have bought him only a few minutes of oxygen before he needs to leave the safety of the formation and dive to 10,000 feet. After landing multiple hits, the bandit passes under the Sally but doesn't return to finish her off. There's no pause in the action though as a second wave flies at the formation...

A pair of Fw 190s approach from 10:30 high and 3:00 level. Dbt and Daehawk hit the bandit at 10:30 and the pilot appears to have been wounded but he still presses his attack and misses the Sally. The ace at 3:00 level is hit by Gbasden but not fatally while TheMix tries to fire and his gun jams. The fighter returns fire and hits the bomber in the bomb bay and damages the bomb bay doors which isn't a problem for the Sally since her bombs were dropped long ago. Dbt, however, takes some shrapnel to his thigh (specifically the vastus muscle) but other than a sharp pain he's still able to man his gun. The ace flies off looking for another target but the Luftwaffe isn't done with the formation yet as a third wave can be seen forming up on the bombers. And NickAragua is running low on oxygen...

The number needed for a successful landing with all crew safe is fairly generous, a 2-12 needed. Due to modifiers that can make your result lower and even negative you can have anything from a totalled plane but crew walks away to make a roll for injuries to fiery death for all. I still like your odds of surviving the landing even though you have a - 3 DRM due to the landing gear damage. I'm just not as certain about y'all getting back to base since you're still pretty far from home.

Dont worry we all had a lot of beans before the flight. I mean chow always serves a lot of beans. So we can make our own tailwind. Just remember to face towards the front of the plane. No , no the other way...the other front..your other front...someone turn him around.

Oops, not quite done with the 2nd attack wave since that ace that shot up the bomb bay and put some shrapnel in Dbt's leg only has an FCA result allowing it to attack again if he has a round left over. And he does, so...

After shooting up the bomb bay and sending some shrapnel flying at Dbt, the ace loops around and comes at the Sally from 1:30 high. Daehawk misses and now Raydude's gun jams. The bandit fires and scores some superficial hits on the Sally. More holes for the ground crew to patch but nothing important hit. The fighter flies off and leaves the Sally alone. But as another wave attacks the formation, the bomber draws the attention of an Fw 190 diving at the Sally from 10:30 high.

Daehawk and Dbt miss the bandit but the fighter peppers the nose with holes but only causes superficial damage. The left wing however is hit in the wing root which still holds together but three more hits in that area will cause it to shear off.

The fighter passes behind the Sally and into the sights of Zenn7 who lets loose a stream of bullets and fills the bandit with holes. It has had enough for the day and flies off.

With a lull in the fighting, NickAragua is finally able to bring the plane down to 10,000 feet and he can now breathe without an oxygen mask. The gunners take the time to redistribute some ammo and while Raydude is able to clear his guns and get them working again, TheMix is still having trouble unjamming his gun. Flying at a low altitude draws the attention of an AA emplacement and some flak clouds surround the Sally. One shell hits the left wing, destroying the flap. NickAragua and Smoove struggle to keep the plane level and succeed. Eventually the Sally crosses into Hungary and is closer to home.

The Sally eventually leaves Hungary and crosses into Yugoslavia. The weather has taken a turn for the worse as thick clouds surround the bomber. But even though she's out of the formation she's not alone as escort planes keep a close watch on the Sally. They don't deter the occasional flak bursts and she takes another hit in the bomb bay, this time destroying the inflatable rafts. This will make survival in the water a little more dicey if the Sally needs to ditch in the Adriatic. More flak targets the bomber and she takes some superficial hits but keeps on flying. Finally TheMix clears his jam as a pair of fighters attack the bomber. The escorts manage to chase off one of the fighters while Gbasden and TheMix fire at a Fw 190 approaching from 3:00 low. They hit and damage the propeller, throwing off the pilot's aim and the bandit misses. The Sally continues on but manages to avoid bandits and only takes some superficial hits from flak.

Finally the Sally leaves the AA guns behind and is over the Adriatic Sea. A trio of fighters finds the bomber but she's well protected by her escorts who engage the bandits and chase them away. The little friends give the same treatment to pair of fighters flying toward the Sally. A strange B-17 with German markings can be seen in the distance. Perhaps it was calling in the Sally's position but it fades into the clouds as the Sally approaches Italy and home. Storm clouds cover the base and the weather is poor. NickAragua warns the crew that they'll have to make a belly landing. All loose items in the cabins are jettisoned including the ammo which at this point would be a liability. Gbadsen gets out of the ball turret and squeezes next to DocD as best he can in the filght deck. The plane descends as pellets of rain hit the windshield. NickAragua eases back the power, working with Smoove to keep the Sally stable with just the one working flap and Sally flies lower...lower...lower...

The plane lands and sparks fly as the belly slides along the runway. The propellers crumble but miraculously the engines stay on their wing and eventually the Sally skids to a stop. No smoke can be seen however as the crew makes their way out of the plane. The Sack Time Sally looks mortally wounded but in the end it brought her crew home safely!

Congratulations, crew of the Sack Time Sally! You have another mission under your belt and you all survived! With the landing gear DRM and a poor weather roll over the base your landing roll added up to...zero. But that result turned out to be "Crew safe, bomber irreparably damaged". I'll take that result!
