Wow, has it really been almost 10 years since BW made her first appearance? The marvel universe film franchise has been around longer than I expected.

Isn't it a little late for a Black Widow movie? I mean, I could always use more Black Widow but it seems like everything is sort of wrapping up, and what could be more important than the final Avengers battles?

It’s late, but not too late. The MCU will continue on after Infinity War. It’s just that no one knows what it will look like then.

I would have really liked a Netflix series. Pull an Arrow and tell a story in present day with flashbacks to her origin story that has only been hinted at so far.Blackhawk wrote:They could always do an 'origin' type film.

Re: [Movie] Black Widow
I can see a reason to do a Black Widow movie. This current phase of movies is going to end with epic epicness, what with all the characters vs Thanos in the Infinity War thing.
So what do you do after that? If you're Marvel, you must know you can't keep ramping up the epicness. The solution is you go small, you go personal. Imagine you're a rock band who just released a meticulously produced, no expense spared double album's worth collection of music that was years in the making, how do you follow that up? Maybe by getting the band in the studio and recording yourselves jamming in a spare, raw collection of primal rock that only took a few days to put together.
So maybe Marvel's next phase starts low key, relatively speaking. No wildly powerful characters. no worlds hanging in the balance. Just individuals fighting more personal battles.

She's a great character for that, too. We've seen snippets of her "on the job" as an agent outside of super-heroics. I could watch a whole movie of that. I think it was called 'Atomic Blonde' ... ?gameoverman wrote: ↑Thu Jan 11, 2018 5:39 pmSo maybe Marvel's next phase starts low key, relatively speaking. HR
Marvel Studios’ Black Widow stand-alone movie has its director.
Cate Shortland, the Australian filmmaker perhaps best known for the Nazi drama Lore, has signed on to helm Black Widow, Marvel’s action-adventure project that will star Scarlett Johansson.
...
Shortland, who does not have agency representation, had a fan in Johansson, who pushed for the helmer. The actress admired Shortland’s handling of the female lead in Lore, a critically acclaimed 2012 drama that tells of a young woman who leads her siblings through Germany as the Allied forces roll in. Shortland's most recent film was Berlin Syndrome, a 2017 thriller that stars Teresa Palmer.
...
Johansson’s Black Widow is reportedly set before the events of the first Avengers movie and sees the actress reprise the role of the Russian spy turned superheroine. The movie will be Marvel’s second female-focused film after Captain Marvel, which is set to open March 8, 2019.

Scarlett will begin filming as soon as she wraps up her role as Harriet Tubman in the Underground Railroad movie.

THR
Stranger Things star David Harbour is joining Scarlett Johansson in Black Widow, Marvel’s stand-alone feature on the Avengers spy turned superheroine.
The movie is casting up as it heads toward a June production start in London and recently added rising actress Florence Pugh to the call sheet.
Cate Shortland, the Australian filmmaker behind the 2012 Nazi drama Lore, is directing the project, which has a script by Jac Schaeffer.

The Verge
After the Avengers footage, the trailer travels to Budapest, which Clint Barton (Hawkeye) has periodically referenced in the Avengers movies as significant to Natasha’s history. There’s an amazing fight scene between Romanoff and a woman named Yelena Belova. Belova becomes the second Black Widow in the comics series, and is referred to as Romanoff’s sister in the trailer.
...
Stranger Things’ David Harbour plays Red Guardian, a Soviet equivalent of Captain America. He’s seen interacting with Romanoff and the rest of the assassins he calls their “family.” They run around in white suits, but their goals are unclear.
...
The trailer ends with Black Widow battling the film’s main villain, Taskmaster. ... It’s unclear when Marvel will release the trailer online. The last time Marvel Studios was at D23, Feige debuted the trailer for Avengers: Infinity War, which didn’t show up online for months.
Black Widow is a prequel to the events of Iron Man 2 and The Avengers

Shouldn't the Romanoff family be speaking in Russian to each other?
Anyway, looks like it should be a solid movie.

I thought the trailer was interesting, and that's more than I expected. Harbour and company looked potentially entertaining. And I've always liked Taskmaster. I hope his movie version holds up.

Re: [Movie] Black Widow
Nah. Humans ran out of ideas decades ago. You can time it by the rash of remakes and old titles. The movie industry was sold and taken over by aliens right around that time. There are no real humans in the fields of acting or behind the scenes. Aliens. All aliens. We pay them in used car batteries. Didn't you ever wonder where those things go?

I think the movie looks good. I am sure I will see it. But my enthusiasm is highly dampened since she was killed off. It just seems weird to release her movie after that - unless this movie is going to retcon her death or something.

The welcome home fight with her sister really eliminated any desire to see this movie. It just screamed "pointless action."
Wait, serious grammar question. If I write that it screams "pointless action," does that sentence have to end in an exclamation mark?

Yeah, that scene really ruined my hopes that this movie would be a nuanced character drama exploring the ennui of post-Soviet Russia as they grip with the loss of an idealized socialist past while trying to build new lives within Russia's evolving capitalist system.

I just watched the Harley Quinn movie, and while I enjoyed it, it felt like the plot was a way to string a bunch of cool action scenes together. Definitely pointless action scenes.
I'll cross my fingers that Black Widow isn't that way. I'll see it anyway. My daughter is a Marvel fanatic.

Just caught an AM showing. It was good! Honestly, they should have just made this right after Civil War (since that is when this takes place).
Kind of a combination of Captain America: Winter Soldier, Jason Bourne, James Bond and even The Americans.
And, yes, there is a post-credit scene at the very end.

Re: [Movie] Black Widow
We saw it last night and it GREATLY exceeded my expectations. I don't really care much at all for the Black Widow character - never read the comics, and on my rank of Avengers she only slightly edges out Hawkeye to avoid dead last.
The movie, however, is a heck of a good time, primarily due to the cast. Florence Pugh is brilliant as always, and David Harbour steals nearly every scene he's in. There's a lot more emotion to this one than the typical Marvel film, which helps break up the action sequences.
Does the plot sometimes get a bit hokey? Sure. Do the Russian accents become tiresome after about 2 minutes? Yep. And you're not going to be wowed by any big surprises. But I came out caring much more for Black Widow than I did going in. Even if, like me, this one didn't rate high on your must-see list, I encourage you to give it a chance.
This was the first true return to the cinema for me since March of last year, and I had a blast.

Re: [Movie] Black Widow
Just got back from Black Widow (this is my second movie in a theater post-vaccine, and it still feels weird). I really enjoyed it.
By Marvel standards, it's a "small" movie, in a good way: the stakes are less than apocalyptic, there's room for real dialogue between reasonably fleshed-out characters. Of course, there are still plenty of big action set pieces and overwrought special effects.
I wish they had made this before Infinity War/Endgame, since it takes place before them and does a nice job of fleshing out Natasha's character.
As for the post-credits scene:

Streaming on Disney+ BUT the paid option only at this time. Meaning you need to pay above and beyond your existing Disney+ fees. Not sure what either cost is sorry.
