Don't forget that you can choose to lose one card from your hand or two cards from your discards in order to prevent damage. And there is nothing to say that you can't do that even if you are full health and the damage is only one point... When things look like they are well in hand, just run up next to the closest bad guy or two and prepare to discard. Also, short rests force you to lose a card. So once it looks like the scenario is easily in hand, start doing a short rest every turn.

Oh it's definitely easy to get if you are trying to. You can just play lots of lose card actions. He was just very death averse. Plus his character was a support character, so he wasn't taking a lot of direct damage. Some other personal quests are MUCH more difficult to achieve.

Lots of good Thanksgiving boardgaming with my extended family over the past few days: Inis, 7 Wonders, Pax Pamir, Cosmic Encounter, Flamme Rouge (with the peloton expansion).

Flamme Rouge was my personal triumph. We played a crowded 6-player game, with no one able to execute an effective breakaway. By the end, everyone was limping toward the finish line, but one of my racers had a five-move card left, which allowed him to barely squeak across the finish line at the front of an enormous peloton.

I'm back home now, and meeting up with some friends tomorrow to try Trismegistus, a new game that according to everything I've read is too complicated for its own good. Wish me luck.

Minimal gaming over the holiday. My usual gaming group for thanksgiving we’re all tied up, so just went with some light games like codenames and Dungeon Mayhem.

I think we only have 2 characters left to unlock. It's been fantastic fun so far. My only negative is that it quite literally has excluded any other game from getting to our group table for a year now. That's not likely to change anytime soon given that we have the expansion on standby, and Isaac is working on a bigger expansion as we speak.
When I move next year, I hope to find a group like that! That sounds exactly like what I want to experience.
For now though, I'll have to settle for solo play.
Lost the 2 scenario the first time around, then beat it on the second. Not sure if I'll have time to play #3 today or not. Back to work tomorrow, so may be tough to get any play time in this week.

So, Trismegistus. Systems within systems, all of obscured by a confusing (though thematic) symbology. Each player is an alchemist, tramsuting materials (lead, tin, gold, etc) into other materials using "essences" (salt, sulphur, etc). You're trying to collect the right combinations of materials to complete experiments (recipes, essentially) that award points.

I liked the game overall, but at a certain point it starts feeling like complexity for complexity's sake. There are other games out there that offer a similar experience with a somewhat lower barrier to entry.

I picked up a used copy of Defenders of the Last Stand and took it for a spin tonight -- not a full game, just wrapping my head around the rules.

Tom Chick posted a video earlier this year making the case that Last Stand is a really good game held back by terrible development. After my brief exposure, I'd say he's right. I love the theme, the world, the flavor text. The dice-chucking is great. But the graphic design is pretty lousy, typos are not uncommon, and the rulebook and card text leave too much ambiguity and uncertainty. I understand there's a fan-written version of the rulebook on BGG and will be checking that out.

Anyway, here's that Tom Chick video.

My play group still prefers Defenders of the Realm over Defenders of the Last Stand. Last Stand just feels disjointed to us. Reminds me, need to sell that off in my next auction drop.

That copy of Earth Reborn is a steal at 32 bucks for the figures only, let alone the really interesting and unique game behind them.

And of course Ashes needs no pimping from me. It’s greatness is well known.

Thanks for flagging this! Any idea if the sale will last beyond Christmas? I suspect that Santa may bring me a board game or two, so I don't want to order Yet More Board Games until I know if I'll have the shelf space.

I don't know how long it's for, can't seem to find any mention online either. In the past FFG has always advertised their holiday sale on their website but it seems this year, it's all under Asmodee and they're keeping things quiet.

I've had a cold since Friday but have the next next 2 weeks off. Even with the heavy head, I managed to squeeze in 2 scenarios of Gloomhaven. I'll finish another today. We'll see how many more I can squeeze in during my vacation!

Other than a new apple watch my christmas haul was 100% board games.

Cryptid
Sagrada
Space Base
7 Wonders: Duel

my 10yo got Zombie Kids: Evolution

Zombie Kids is the only one we have played so far and it's a pretty cool game for playing with younger kids. It is co-op and not totally brain dead. Of the other games, Cryptid is the only one I haven't played but I've watched a couple instructional video reviews and I am very excited to give it a shot. The other are all games I have played a few times and am a big fan of so hopefully I can find an audience for them.

Got a copy of Marvel's Crisis Protocol from my little brother, but I haven't even opened it yet. I really don't need another miniature's game. Unfortunately, he doesn't believe in gift receipts or I'd exchange it for something else. :(

I've been slowly assembling my minis for my game. I picked it up after I saw a couple of game play videos. It really looks like a solid game. I'm going to get the rest assembled and do quick tabletop paint jobs with contrast paints, hopefully before the break is over.

They did a pretty nice job of including terrain with the game, including the lamp posts and dumpsters and cars and the newsstand. I'm not really happy with the size of the minis, though...all of my existing terrain is a little small for it.

Watch a gameplay video or two. This is the one that convinced me:

Apparently my loved ones have figured out that we like board games, because a lot of board games were received this Christmas.

Me:
Conquest of Paradise
Champions of Hara
Conspiracy: The Solomon Gambit
Oaxaca: Crafts of a Culture

Child:
Minecraft: Builders and Biomes
Leaving Earth

Of these, we've only had a chance to try a couple. Leaving Earth is delightful, very similar to High Frontier but a bit more streamlined and abstracted. Still very crunchy, with lots of thrust-to-mass calculations to keep things fun.

Conquest of Paradise is about Polynesian tribes exploring and colonizing the South Pacific circa 500 AD. It's basically a 4X game -- lots of exploring the unknown, expanding your empire, battling your neighbors -- but with war canoes. Gameplay is fast and smooth. Really like this one.

Played our first game of Star Wars Destiny with Little B 10.9 tonight. It was surprisingly fun with just the core set, although I think FF could have done a much better job of explaining the rules. We had to google multiple things for clarification because the manual was unclear.

The local gaming shop in my neighborhood had a Marvel Champions event on Saturday. Basically they provided copies of the game for folks to play for free (but obviously not to keep). I was really expecting a bigger turnout but there were only 7 folks who showed up to play. I made the 8th but didn't actually play, I just watched and asked questions. They did a raffle for some play-mats and promo cards at the end. I definitely want this game! unfortunately I've purchased 5 games in the past 4 months and 3 of those were $200+ so I am definitely over my budget. :D Seems very much akin to Sentinels of the Multiverse with a few extra mechanics that add minimally to the complexity and you can customize your hero deck, which is the major difference. Hopefully in the next few months.

Played the first 3 quests of Sword and Sorcery: Immortal souls with a friend. I took Thorgar as the Cleric and my friend chose Laegon with the Bow. We crushed the first 2 quest pretty easily. The final monster in the second quest I took out in a single round of attack with the two handed hammer. :D Unfortunately we failed the third quest when we ran out of time. We didn't really waste any rounds so I am not sure how we can move faster but we will see.

Played a round of Dice Throne and one of Street Masters (solo) as well.

Introduced my family to the fun that is Pandemic recently. My wife really enjoyed being the quarantine specialist and sent a pic of her pawn and role card to a friend at the CDC. Looking forward to the On The Brink expansion coming this week.

And everyone at my in-laws enjoys Ticket to Ride.

My daughter loves Machi Koro so we started playing Machi Koro:Legacy this past weekend.

The first game was pretty basic for MK veterans but I'm looking forward to adding more options and seeing how it differs from standard MK.

Indeed, those two games have to rank among the very best there are in terms of pure gateway appeal and easing the process of introducing modern tabletop games to those unfamiliar with the hobby.

Wait until you get to play Pandemic: Legacy, though -- that'll really blow your socks off.

Impressions from a couple of Christmas acquisitions that we played over the break:

Dice Hospital -- A clever little engine builder about operating competing hospitals. The dice are your patients, with the number of pips indicating how healthy they are. Each round, your hospital becomes more capable as you add specialists and wards. Really good for families or as a gateway game, I think.

Minecraft: Builders and Biomes -- Much more creative and crunchy than I would have expected from a Minecraft tie-in. It's not a heavy game by any means, but this is definitely a Euro, with interlocking systems and multiple ways to score. You're moving around a simple map -- a grid -- mining resources, fighting mobs, and purchasing buildings. The most fun part is the resource bank: instead of just picking up little cubes from a pile, the cubes are big and chunky, and stacked into a larger 4x4x4 cube, which you gradually chip away each time you "mine" a resource. Points are scored when mobs are defeated, as each level of resource cubes is removed, and at the end via bonus cards that you may have picked up along the way.

If I have one criticism of Minecraft, it's that the theme isn't particularly well-realized. You never feel like you're building something Minecraft-style; you're just paying resources for a card that shows a Minecraft-looking building. In fact, I think that if you gave this overall design a few more wrinkles and wrapped it in a more "grown-up" theme, you would have a pretty well-received mid-weight Euro game.

On Friday I played Kraftwagen at a friend's house. It's a mid-weight Euro game with a really well-integrated theme: building and selling cars in the early years of the German auto industry.

The best part is the car market, where different buyers will prioritize different qualities (most advanced engine, best-looking body, largest team of service mechanics, etc.) when deciding which cars to buy. You have some control over which buyers appear, and in what order, essentially manipulating the market.

Really good overall. There's a bit of rules overhead, but it's all very intuitive because of the theme. Plenty of player interaction and it plays quickly -- easily under 90 minutes if you know the rules.

I've played Cryptid 3 times now with my wife and kids never all at once so I've only played with 3 players. Each time it has been interesting and fun. I look forward to getting back to the office to play with some grownup gamers. It is about as mechanically minimalistic as possible for a deduction game. I would also say thematically minimalistic as well, but that would require some kind of theme. It has about as much theme as checkers.

We've been all Terraforming Mars all the time for quite a long time now. But we picked up the new expansion, Turmoil, this past week, which kinda makes it worth talking about again. Basically, the new expansion adds a mirco worker placement side game to the main game in the same way Colonies added an alternate resource collection side game. Only Turmoil is, by its nature very nature, political side game and everyone is affected by the decision making processes and shifts in government; both those processes and shifts inside and outside of the collective players' control.

I didn't think I was going to like it very much, fearing king maker or failed control = waste dynamics. At the nearly $40 price tag, after Michigan taxes, I was wondering if it was money grab (Fryx seem to put a high price tag on IP vs components included to decide their pricing model) but I really enjoyed the way it changes the game. However, even after you become accustomed to the rules and dynamic, it truly is total additional subgame. The result is a three player game, using drafts and all of the expansions, with a reasonable flow settles in to a five hour long experience. That's a lot of time for a board game. It keeps me engaged. Not a lot of five hour long board games can say that. The box says it adds a half hour to the game length. The reality is it adds about an hour even after everyone at the table have internalize this whole separate game weaving in and out of their existing game. Still, it's a worthy addition if you enjoy Terraforming Mars... and Hellas and Elesium... and Venus Next... and Prelude... and Colonies... (and have already spent $180+ to date)

Up until Turmoil, we'd give a new player the starting corp, their 10 cards at no cost, and 1 of each resource, and throw them to the lions playing with all of the other expansions as if it were the basic game. The new players advantages were often enough to see them win and were always seeing them play a competitive game. I do not think I would do that with Turmoil. I think Turmoil would the be the tipping point away from enjoyment between a new player enjoying the game and walking away from a five plus hour experience thinking, "too much game, too much going on, and who wants to give half a day to that experience?"

Summary: A big thumbs up here but expect a crazy high amount of time as in initial outlay of effort to digest the rules and remember their impact on the greater game, and a maybe a 20 or 25% increase in time to your regular game and it only for experienced TM players who would look forward to playing the game more than one time in a session (not necessarily possible any more)

I think there was more discussion over in the solo thread but I got Marvel Champions: The Card Game and have really been enjoying it despite a rough intro. It arrived late in the afternoon on Dec. 31st. I opened it and started reading the rules and planned on doing a solo run through the next day. Then after dinner my son saw it and asked if we could try it. I explained I'd just glanced at the rules, needed a learning game and he said no problem we'd do it together. I replied it was New Years Eve and we shouldn't abandon Mom and your sister to play a game and to my surprise they both said they'd play too. Not that they aren't gaming friendly but wanting to learn a new game I didn't really peg them for was a real shock.

Long story short we slogged through a few hours of a learning game full of rulebook reading, half guesses and butchering several rules, most notably crippling how I played my own character of Iron Man. We paused the game and left it setup untouched for 3 days before I managed to convince them it was a horribly botched attempt and that we should start over now that we know what we're doing. Haven't gotten back to it with them but it did let me dig into the solo game which I've played about a dozen times now :)

The game is very playable solo... and I mean truly solo. I've played controlling a single hero every game and it's played very well, unlike similar games where you can play solo but have to or feel compelled to juggle 2 or more characters. From reading online and our brief, flawed 4 player game I do get the impression the game is simpler with one hero. Much of the game scales directly with the number of heroes... the villain might get 15 health per hero, the scheme he's trying to accomplish accrues 1 threat per hero per turn, etc. and that seems to balance well, but the catch is that when the villain takes his turn he deals out one of his encounter cards per hero. Some of these cards affect all heroes so in a solo game that impact is lessened. Worst of all is simply that playing multiple cards per turn means the villain runs through the deck faster with more heroes, and when you reshuffle the villain deck you add a token to the scheme that increases the amount of threat that builds up. I think I've only come close once or twice to running through the deck in my solo games while in our learning 4 player game we did so twice before stopping. Not a huge complaint at all, if nothing else it just means adding in a hero to my solo games might be a subtle way to increase the difficulty.

While it is a living card game the deck customization is fairly straightforward. You need to make a 40-50 card deck for each hero, but 15 of those cards are preset by the hero you choose. Iron Man has his dedicated 15 cards, so does Black Panther, etc. So roughly 1/4 of your deck building is already done. Next, you choose one of four attributes you'd like to specialize in: aggression, protection, justice or leadership. The remaining 25-35 cards in your deck will come from the one you've chosen and/or a pool of basic cards. There's no mixing of aggression and protection, you just deal with your one choice. The core set alone doesn't have a lot of room for customizing your deck but there is some. Expansions increase this pool of decisions but again, you're still limited to the one aspect you choose and that narrows the field a lot. Unlike other FFG games, they even give you as many copies of each card as you could possibly need... most cards allow for 3 copies in your deck and you're given 3 copies of those, or 1-2 for cards that only allow 1-2 copies. No need to buy multiple core sets!

The heroes all have slightly different mechanics so they feel and play unique. Customizing your deck expands on this... Aggressive Iron Man (my favorite so far) is different than Protection Iron Man, but Iron Man in general plays very differently than Spider Man.

The big decision each round is how to spend your cards. They all have a cost (0-4) in the top left corner while also showing a resource icon (almost always 1, rarely 2-3) in the bottom left corner. You discard resources equal to the cost to put that card in play. There are 3 kinds of resource, plus a wild, and sometimes there's a benefit for spending the right kind of resource but any resource can be used to put cards into play. So each round is a mechanically simple, but often difficult choice of what cards do you want vs. what cards should you spend.

The Core set comes with 3 villains that are roughly easy, standard and hard but they all play out differently besides just difficulty. The game comes with a built in difficulty setting for each villain so even the "easy" villain Rhino comes in normal and "hard" modes. You also get to mix in a side scheme that goes into each villains deck and they are also rated by difficulty. There are 5 side schemes to choose from so mixing them up with the 3 villains and 2 difficulty modes gives you a lot of options.

There are 3 expansions released so far, adding Captain America, Ms. Marvel on the hero side, and Green Goblin for the villains. The hero packs give you the new hero plus additional cards for each aspect to increase your deck building options (Protection and Leadership have more to work with right now) while the villain pack adds a new villain, 2 different scenarios to go with him, and a few new modular side schemes to mix in with the other villains.

The expansions seem to be hard to find but I got mine off Barnes and Noble for list price and free shipping. Looks like they're still available too.

I don't own Marvel Champions yet, trying to curtail my spending, but I am really looking forward to picking it up at some point. I have watched a live play through and several videos. The consensus seems to be 1 - 3 heroes with 2 being optimal and 1-2 players with 3 being doable and 4 players being way to cumbersome. While the core game is reasonably priced on Amazon the expansions are all priced ridiculously, however I have seen copies available on board gaming sites like Miniature Market for MSRP or below ($13 vs. $40). I also believe there are subscriptions services you can sign up for which guarantee you any expansion pack that releases for the MSRP. Look forward to hearing more impressions.

I got a couple learning games of On Mars in. I do see the beauty in this game. Pretty steep learning curve, but once you get through it, there is a lot to digest. I need a couple of more plays to get the informed verdict, but I think it will rate high on my list.

I'd really like to try this sometime. Gotta see if any of my heavy gamer friends picked up a copy.

Very late the party, I have finally played Five Tribes. I am not good at it -- I came in last in both of our games -- but I'm having a good time wrapping my head around the strategy. I can see why it's so well-regarded.

That said, my friend's copy is from the original print run, with the "slave" resource (replaced by fakirs in later editions). That was pretty jarring and uncomfortable on my first play. I'm surprised and disappointed that a game from 2014 would cavalierly include slave-trading. This is not a highly thematic or historical game, and they could easily have used a different name for that resource. By the second play I could pretty much ignore it (along with the rest of the theming), but still.

I had my first good board/card gaming weekend in a long time.

- Played a ton of Exploding Kittens and Love Letter with all the kids.
- My brother sent me a huge stack of his extra Star Wars Destiny cards and dice. Little B 10.10 and I sorted through all of them, created some new decks, and played two rounds. Her light side deck whipped my dark side deck both times, much to my chagrin.
- Ran through four games of Legendary Marvel, winning two and losing two. I’m finally starting to get a feel for the cadence of the game, which helps. Some of the schemes and Masterminds are crazy hard though, and I’m realizing how absolutely vital team composition really is.
- Played through the first mission of the Return to Hoth xpac for Imperial Assault. I won, but realized after than I had screwed up some of the enemy rules and had to play through it again. Second time was not quite as successful, but still very fun. I love the way the missions are structured through the app.
- We tried to play Clank!, but I don’t think Little B is quite ready for that one yet. She had a really hard time wrapping her head around the deck building aspect. Will have to try it again sometime.
- Played two Gloomhaven scenarios.

All in all, it was a great gaming weekend. Probably would have done more, but a friend convinced me to jump back into Diablo 3...which sucked up most of yesterday.

Even though I've had it for almost 2 years, this weekend I got Caverna to the table for the first time. None of the four players, myself included, had played it before but we had all played Agricola. Even so, we got a few rules wrong, one of which greatly increased the effectiveness of expeditions, so the one player who really went for that early destroyed everyone else. Still, I enjoyed it and hope to get it to the table again. Hopefully this time the game won't last quite as long (2.5 hours!).
