using an RTX card with an older CPU

Post by Greg Wak »

So my rig is about 4 yrs old or so. i7 4700, 16gb ram, Haswell chipset, 1080 gpu. It stil cruises through everything with the caveot that I haven't played any AAA graphic intensives gms in 4k. So if there is some 2080 or 2080ti great deal out there Im itching for it. Is it silly to pair that up with the older cpu? Would the cpu bottleneck most of the gain I would get? Card is expensive enough, but a stupid cpu switch requires the mb and memory upgrade as well.

My son's video card died a year or so ago. A relative gave me an RTX 2080, and my son got my card. My CPU is an i5 4670k, about the same age, and slower than yours. I have half the RAM. The card gave me a substantial gain. Is the rest of my system bottle-necking it? Absolutely, but there was enough of a gain to make it worthwhile, and I'll be ready to go if I can ever upgrade my CPU/RAM/mobo.

This is what I am facing at the moment. I have about a 5 year old gaming PC.

https://pcpartpicker.com/user/scoop20906/saved/rPkwrH
Intel Core i7-4770K 3.5 GHz Quad-Core Processor

MSI Z87-G45 Gaming ATX LGA1150 Motherboard

G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR3-1866 Memory

Seagate Barracuda 1 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

Samsung 840 EVO 500 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive

EVGA GeForce GTX 780 3 GB Dual Classified ACX Video Card

Corsair 500R Black ATX Mid Tower Case

Corsair Professional 850 W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply
Its been a great run but I am starting to notice it having trouble running new games like Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order. I just want to upgrade my GPU so I can play the new AAA games like Cyberpunk 2077 and I am considering a RTX 2070 Super but I'm concerned the rest of my components will bottleneck it. Unfortunately I'd have to do a full upgrade tho, new Motherboard, new RAM to DD4 and a new CPU and I just don't have the energy and money to do all that.

Should I get the RTX 2070 Super or is that overkill and I am better off getting a cheaper card? I'd appreciate any advice or help.

I'd go just the 2070 super, as the rest of your system seems quite capable. Worst case you get MoBo, CPU and RAM later. But I'd say the 780 is your bottleneck ATM. Cyberpunk will bring recent PC to their knees, I expect something like Crysis has been, were the computer to run it on Ultra was two years in the future.
Gaming? Nope, I'm into Bitwig.

Thanks, I think that is what I am going to do once I get my tax refund. I can't say how excited I am to upgrade again.

Are you thinking of upgrading, Daehawk?

No theres no money in the budget for things like that Im afraid. Maybe in 5 years when I pay off the mortgage.

Same as above. Your CPU will bottleneck it from its full potential, yes, but its bottlenecked potential is far, far above what you've got right now. You should see big improvements in games, far more than if you upgraded the CPU/mobo/RAM and kept the old video card.
