Re: Running
I had a goal of 292 runs this year (80% of the year) and, once I started getting close, 2000 miles. I'm at 281 runs and 1922 miles. My wife, though, is in NJ taking care of her mother leaving me as a single parent this week. I haven't worked out in a week. This is bad physically, statistically, and is hurting my stress levels. I really hope my wife can come back soon.

Re: Running
My running days ended completely when we had kids and my wife started working full time opposite my work hours. My last race was in 2015 and I've made no serious attempt to run in several years now. Even on those rare occasions that i might find some time, I'm usually in dire need of relaxation.stessier wrote: ↑Wed Dec 11, 2019 2:09 pm I had a goal of 292 runs this year (80% of the year) and, once I started getting close, 2000 miles. My gym at work has a kid center you can drop the kiddos off at while you work out. At $10/hour it's a no brainier.
A gym might not be the answer for everyone but I think I'd crack if I didn't get at least a few workouts* in per week.
*Just a few miles running and 15 minutes of weights.

Re: Running
For years I had a membership at LA Fitness and I think it was $15 per kid per month for access to the baby prison. You could drop them off up to two hours, but the hours available was pretty limited. The nearest LA Fitness is now over 30 minutes away, so we canceled that membership when we moved to the boonies a few years ago. Last year, they opened a Planet Fatness nearby, they are cheap but don't have a prison to incarcerate the kids while mommy and daddy are torturing themselves.

What about breaking out of work for an hour or so to get a run in? My afternoon runs break up the work day, and I’m actually much more productive after. Either way, good luck, Stessier.stessier wrote: ↑Wed Dec 11, 2019 2:09 pm I had a goal of 292 runs this year (80% of the year) and, once I started getting close, 2000 miles. At an average of 38.5 miles a week, 2K miles seems incredible to me. I’m pushing an annual mileage PR this year and hope to crack 1,600 miles (currently at 1,550). I can’t imagine fitting another 400 miles in there somewhere. Really impressive on your part!!

I'd love to do that, but I'm already getting in at 8:30 and leaving at 3:00 due to dropping off and picking up the kids. I'm working through lunch to compensate a bit and also using 2 hours of vacation time each day to cover the rest.Kurth wrote: ↑Fri Dec 13, 2019 2:04 amWhat about breaking out of work for an hour or so to get a run in? Fortunately, it looks like my wife will be back tomorrow. She'll have to go back for a bit after Christmas, but school doesn't start until 1/6, so we should be good.
And good job hitting a PR for mileage!!

My high for mileage in a year was 1300 and change. I could maybe shoot for 1500 one year, but can't even fathom 2000. Wow!
Last year, I crammed 45 miles in during the final week to meet my goal of 1000. This year, I'm already at 1028 with a few weeks to go. This will make it 6 of the last 7 years where I've met that goal. So I'm happy with that.

Re: Running
Not quite running related, but I sorta "just" noticed that my New Balance 990V4 I bought last year in August is no longer wearable. I've worn both outer edges to the point that both shoes are leaning outwards. As the shoes are $190 with tax, it was a pretty significant investment at the time. I have a couple backup pairs, but it was the first "premium" pair I bought. A little sentimental about it.
OTOH, my job at least makes me walk 10000 steps a day. Give or take 20%.

That's awesome, Baroquen! That's actually similar to my goal - Trying to average 1K miles a year over 10 years to get to 10,000 miles in ten years. I've been trying to run extra when possible to build in a little insurance (hence the 1,600 this year).Baroquen wrote: ↑Sat Dec 14, 2019 1:23 am My high for mileage in a year was 1300 and change. Re: Running
And success!
Runs: 296
Miles: 2000.00
Time: 298:20:03
If you do the math, that gives me an average speed of 8.95 minutes/mile exactly (8:57 min/mile). Weird that it came out exact - I planned the mileage but not the speed.
My average run was 6.7568 miles. I have to download all the data to do some more calculations because I'd bet the median was 5.75 miles.
Nice to be done. Now to rest for 12 hours before starting it all over again!

Congratulations Stessier!
My stats for the year:
Runs: 61
Miles: 116.1
Time: 22 hours
Avg pace: 11:37 minutes/mile
I started back in August where my first 5k took 39 minutes. Yesterday, 12/30, I ran it at 33:43 minutes.
I think I'll shoot for 520 miles in 2020. It should be doable.

Finished with 717 here. Womp womp. Not what I wanted, but with two months off for injury and another two very light for same, I'll take it. Finished the year with 1054 total miles including walking/cycling.

Only managed 146 miles this year despite intentions to get back in into running more heavily. My personal best was around 550 the year that I did my first half-mararthon. It would be nice to beat that in the coming year. Here's to a more productive 2020...

My end of year recap:
Goal: 1000 miles
Result:1100.1 miles (2nd best total ever)
2 marathons completed. 21 total marathons finished. 19 states visited.

Re: Running
Great job, everyone! This year I think I set a record of about 2000 refrigerator sprints. Unfortunately, that kind of locks me into a distance of about 10 yards.
A more disturbing record is the approximately 0 miles biked this year, down from a pre-child average of about 6000 miles per year. Mileage is hard when the bike stays mounted on the garage wall.
If we get a mild enough spring, I might try to get my son to start endurance training so we can run a 5K event we go to in the fall. We can level up together if we're able to do it regularly. That would be harder if we have to bring my 3 year old daughter along, but last year on a 2-mile event, she ran the first half mile without escort and seemed very determined until she just couldn't go anymore (and was crabby by the end not wanting to walk anymore). Or maybe she was just pissed because I stole her beer token.

Re: Running
I don't want to jinx anything, but I've run 30 miles so far in 2020, including the past four days in a row, and I have no foot/ankle pain. It's possible that I'm turning the corner after 11 months of this bullshit.
I got a foot brace that I've been wearing for part of the night which stretches the achilles and plantar fascia, and I think that's helped a bunch. We'll see if it holds when I start kicking the mileage back up. So far I've topped my runs at 6 miles and average more like 4.
Man, getting old sucks.

Re: Running
I started 10K training last week using the Runkeeper Pro training.
I'm not really aiming for a 10K, but I wanted something that would really build my cardio in prep for Spartan training starting in a couple of weeks. Last year I felt like my cardio was never really up to par, so this year I'm trying to run in parallel to keep that side of things strong.
So far so good. I went from sitting on my ass over the holidays to running 2 miles straight, so I'm happy with the program.

Re: Running
This is great! An unsolicited suggestion (you might already be following): If you've been dealing with injury issues, especially from running wear and tear, think about experimenting with upping your cadence. A while back, I was dealing with foot/ankle/knee pain. Tried physical therapy and stretching and icing and other stuff, but nothing really helped. Then someone suggested shortening my stride and increasing my turnover/cadence, and it was like night and day. I upped my regular cadence to the 180-190 range, and in a month, I saw a noticeable difference. I've been running with a high cadence now for almost two years, and I've been injury free ever since.Zaxxon wrote: ↑Mon Jan 13, 2020 9:33 pm I don't want to jinx anything, but I've run 30 miles so far in 2020, including the past four days in a row, and I have no foot/ankle pain. At first, it feels pretty strange, like you're taking way too many steps (like a duck paddling like hell under the water). But eventually, you get used to it, and it makes running feel a little more effortless - almost like you're floating. Anyway, that's been my experience.

My kids gave me a gift of new shoes for Christmas, bought with their own money. Jordan Air Max 200. The problem is that on three separate occasions I've had shin splints in my left leg, whereas I didn't with my previous running shoes. I think I'm going to have to go to a running shoe store and get properly fitted. I'll just use the Jordans for work.

Well so far my training is in about the same place it was at this time that year. It really is amazing how little running I did in the run up to the Ragnar. The race itself was like 10% of my mileage for the year.

Or to save a bit of money, you could try the Epic React flyknit 2 which seems like pretty much the direct ancestor. Just make sure you try them for size before you buy. I wear a 9.5 in every other running shoe, but for some reason with the Epic Flyknit 2 I need a 10. They are perfect and super comfy.Kurth wrote: ↑Fri Jan 24, 2020 3:36 amNice shoes, bur 100% not for running. What have you run in before? I wear the Flyknit 2 as my daily runner (every morning), since Nike totally botched the redesign of my beloved Vomeros. The Vomero 14 is not a Vomero except in name.
I alternate the Flyknit 2 a few times a week with an older pair of Vomeros I have (Vomero 12's). The flyknit 2's are firm yet give plenty of cusion, and are a "neutral" shoe.

Thanks for the recommendations guys. I won't be running in the short term though. I had laser lithotripsy surgery on Friday to take out a kidney stone. I actually scheduled a trip to the running store after the operation to get fitted for shoes. Oh, how optimistic I was! This was before I got introduced to pain that shouldn't be anywhere near a man's privates.

Ouch. Get yourself a new pair of sneakers as a recovery present!

Re: Running
Speaking of ouchies, I seem to have reaggravated my torn meniscus in my right knee. It's healing and not as painful as a few days ago, and I was able to borrow a pair of crutches from a friend that really helped. But no running anytime soon.

Re: Running
After 5 months of not running a single step I ran 5k Saturday and another 5k Sunday. Now I am thinking about taking another 5 months off. We'll see when the weather says it's ok to run. It was in the 70s this weekend, but there's a small chance of snow Wednesday.

Yeah, you wouldn't want to overdo it...coopasonic wrote:After 5 months of not running a single step I ran 5k Saturday and another 5k Sunday. Now I am thinking about taking another 5 months off. Re: Running
I *really* wish I didn't thoroughly hate running on the treadmill. I have a pretty nice one... and I hates it. Of course I also hate running in general, but I hate the treadmill more.

Re: Running
I get that. Well, hate might be strong, but dislike for sure. Running outside is just so much better. Seeing your progress rather than watching a clock is much more inspiring.
For January I managed 80 miles of running and 15.75 miles of swimming. I'm discovering swimming, at least the way I do it, burns way fewer calories than running. Or possibly I'm putting on pounds and pounds of muscles. Seems the calorie burn is the more likely of the two.

Re: Running
I did not expect that. In my head I thought swimming would be better and I googled to prove you wrong. I guess I don't need to worry about going to the pool anyway.According to statistics from the Mayo Clinic, an hour of light to moderate lap swimming will burn 423 calories, while an hour of running at 5 mph will burn 606 calories.
I do have to assume swimming is better on your joints. I'll still stick to plodding along the pavement... and hope Zaxxon doesn't make me to do any more damn trail runs with thousands of feet of elevation change.
