Re: Steam's Deals of the Day/Weekend/Midweek
No but it did increase my desire to play some of the games I already own. But I just got back into LotRO for a bit (friends restarted, their old characters are stuck on a defunct server w/ transfers broken; I last played in a timeframe I was able to move mine, so I was able to give them a little money (7 G, assuming that'll help at their levels -20-30) and some consumables they probably don't need).

Genesis Alpha One Deluxe Edition has a free to play weekend and is on sale for 50% off. I've had it on my Wishlist but I'm not sure why, so having a free weekend might jog my memory.

Absolutely fantastic game. If you also add Warhammer 1 you'll get access to a world domination mode with a different world map and probably twice as many races.

Gonna put my standard question here......if I was never able to grasp the gameplay of Civ or any Civ-like games, any reason to think this game is different?

Re: Steam's Deals of the Day/Weekend/Midweek
None of the DLC is necessary at all. You get an insane amount of content from the base game and free DLC. If you are a fan of the WH fantasy old world, you can get DLC for certain factions, lords and some mechanics.wonderpug wrote: ↑Fri May 29, 2020 11:12 amYou've both piqued my interest, but what's up with all this DLC? Necessary or superfluous?
The top DLC for WH2 is Curse of the Vampire Coast and Rise of the Tomb Kings. Warden and Paunch was released this week and I've already played both sides. These all add some new unique campaigns that differ from others. Prophet and Warlock is fun because you get the Skaven Lord Ikit Claw and his tactical nukes.
I didn't pick up any DLC at first though. But I did pretty quickly once I started playing.
The bottom line is the DLC is good when you have played a ton of the base game and are looking to mix it up a bit.
The strategic level of the game is pretty easy, but honestly if you couldn't grasp Civ, this may not be for you. The strategic layer plays more like Heroes of Might and Magic more than anything. You build and move armies around a massive map killing and conquering. You don't have to play the tactical (Total War) level at all if you don't want, but it's fun once you get the hang of it. I'm enjoying it more than any TW game I've played.

Re: Steam's Deals of the Day/Weekend/Midweek
There are three ways to play: A 'conquer the world' campaign, the Eye of the Vortex campaign (with story, objectives, cutscenes, etc), and a the grand campaign (which you get if you have both 1 and 2, and is basically a larger conquer the world campaign.) The Vortex campaign has a different story/starting location for each general.
Each of the cheaper DLC adds (usually) one or two new generals and a few new troops along with a new campaign.
Each of the higher priced DLC typically adds a completely new race with multiple new generals and new campaigns.
Generals usually bring a few unique troops, but the race's core gameplay remains the same. New races bring new gameplay styles. For example, the Skaven hit hard, but are very fragile. They have no fliers and no artillery. But at the same time, they have massive, massive numbers of troops that are cheaply bought and easily thrown away as cannon fodder. The Lizardmen, on the other hand, are very tough and have great healing and tons of huge monsters, but have smaller armies and some of their units can be hard to control (they can rampage.) They all add more gameplay and options, but there is a ton already built into the base game. Some of them have really interesting themes (see the trailers for Tomb Kings and Vampire Coast.) If you are going to want to be in it for the long haul, grab them while they're on sale. If you want to play a couple of matches and move on, you'd probably be fine with the default options. But read each one to see what they offer.

Last question....would just buying TW:W1 be good enough or do the updates to 2 make it that much better of a game?

That's what I'm looking at. Just curious if 2 is worth the extra $6 for someone new to the series.

Re: Steam's Deals of the Day/Weekend/Midweek
WH1 and 2 are comparable. The main difference is that each of them covers a different part of the world. The Warhammer world map is a very close analog for our own. The first game covers Europe and the Middle East. The second covers the Americas, Ulthuan (Atlantis), and Africa (all their analogs, of course.) With both you can play Mortal Empires which combines both maps. The biggest difference in the two is which races are available, although WH2 is a little more polished. If you were going to start with one and the polish wasn't the main deciding factor, I'd look at the races available in each and decide based on that.
