Protest Music 2020+

Post by Holman »

Desperate times call for desperate songs, or else simmering dirges or inspiring anthems or etc.

I've never had a very brilliant relationship with music, but even I've been able to rely on powerful songs to help me through the struggles. Now more than ever it seems like we could benefit from songs larger than individual despair.

Interpret as you will.

Here's my first contribution, something I already posted in another thread. This is the great Billy Bragg covering Taylor Swift and mashing up the text of her recent powerful anti-trump tweet into the later verses:

Much prefer my Nazis Nuremberged.

Here's a Drive-By Truckers song from just a few years ago that seems perfectly relevant today:

Much prefer my Nazis Nuremberged.

I've been listening to lots of Bad Religion lately. Seems very fitting for the current circumstance.

Some of my friends joked we'd get tons of great punk from Trump. That hasn't panned out but some of the older bands put out some good stuff that really captures the zeitgeist. The bottom is really appropriate for the last week.

Not directly related but this has been in my head with regard to our militarized police movements and now the military being called on/threatened by Donnie.

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

In the early hours of February 4, 1999, a 23-year-old Guinean immigrant named Amadou Diallo (born September 2, 1975) was shot and killed by four New York City Police Department plain-clothed officers—Sean Carroll, Richard Murphy, Edward McMellon, and Kenneth Boss. Carroll would later claim to have mistaken him for a rape suspect from one year earlier, though his claim was never confirmed by any objective evidence. The officers fired a combined total of 41 shots, 19 of which struck Diallo, outside his apartment at 1157 Wheeler Avenue in the Soundview section of the Bronx.

The four officers, who were part of the now-defunct Street Crimes Unit, were charged with second-degree murder and acquitted at trial in Albany, New York.[1] Diallo was unarmed and a firestorm of controversy erupted after the event, as the circumstances of the shooting prompted outrage both inside and outside of New York. Issues such as police brutality, racial profiling, and contagious shooting were central to the ensuing controversy.

If you like DBT's check out their album The Dirty South. It's their best one IMHO.

They still had Jason Isbell in the band at the time and he wrote and sang some fantastic songs on there.

The story behind his guitar tone is nuts all its own.
NEIL : Well actually my amp is a sort of custom assembly. It has may different elements and controls to it. That amp has a gadget that nobody else has got. It's unique...totally original, and I'm really happy with it. It's called a Whizzer, and it's on top of my Fender Deluxe Tweed, which is the backbone of my sound. The pots on my amp are motorized and linked to the Whizzer. I adjust my settings on the digital controls of the Whizzer, which sets of the motor which actually physically turns the pots, to set the position. This setting pushes a button that, once it's set off, turns all the dials on the amp to the desired setting. I've got four of them, so there's no interruption in the sound. My whole system is fairly complicated. I have an effects rack -- actually not a rack, it's a box full of effects. They're all very old: echoplex, analog delay, Mutron octave divider, a Boss flanger that must be from 1969. I start them all from a set of metal switches -- NASA quality stuff...I have some remotes to start them from a distance. I can't use the small Boss pedals. Each time it's the same thing: «Oh, we're sorry» and the whole thing smashes to bits...

Q : Could you have recorded Weld with equipment from the Sixties?

NEIL : No, not without the Whizzer, because it's the only way to have that immediate change in sound. The volume on the Deluxe goes up to 12. If you go from 12 to 10 and a half, suddenly the attack is different. At 12, the amp saturates completely and gives the sound after the attack. But at 10 and a half, the attack stays the same. So I have a button for just for that change of volume position. On a Deluxe, there's one tone button and two for the volume. The volume for the channel you're not using affects the channel you are using, even if you're not plugged into it, because of the amplification stage. Being able to control the channel I'm not using or to adjust the highs here and there -- that's the sort of thing I couldn't do without the Whizzer. It's technology that doesn't affect the sound, just the control of the sound.

Q : Where do you get your feedback? From the gain of the amp, or a pedal?

NEIL : The volume. There is no gain on the amp. And we don't use distortion pedals. Just the Fender Deluxe.

Skinny Puppy "Pro-Test"

Lyrics
Spoiler:
Hit me on the street while waiting to do nothing
Where within the space can anything feel certain?
Look into the future make out the word speak
Send in the spies to watch them

Creepy are the people unable to do something
Sitting on an armchair fenced in their creation
Look up to be there, anywhere is somewhere
Itchy past scratch the itch

Hit me in the streets

Feel about a nation
So precious is the freedom
Carousel the brass ring
Reach into a black mass
So it's corroded
So it's polluted
We all want some of it

Maybe all the people now left without no loving
Where with all the strength gone better see it coming
Get off the fence trip
Rip up the garbage
Make it up to the Earth, bitch

Hit me in the streets

Be a politician
Eroding all your freedoms
Down the rabbit hole cracks
Money markets fall
Through a looking glass
Time becomes too fast
All to benefit the rich

So keep eating from the apple
Inches from the center
Shaken to the core
Until it doesn't matter
No one to turn to
Nowhere to run to
Better the bomb to blow it
When darkness veils the world, four Warriors of Light shall come.

I did know that.

I'm currently working my way through Community for the first time, midway through Season 3. Seeing his Childish Gambino persona compared to his Troy Barnes persona can be a bit jarring sometimes.
