I haven't been listening to much I haven't already posted about here lately. But, this new track from Unleash the Archers is awesome and has me excited for their new album!

Jeph Jacques (author of my favorite webcomic for the past 17 years, Questionable Content) put out an instrumental metal album that is surprisingly good. You can stream the whole thing on Bandcamp here.

Is the "grab the air and pull it towards you numerous times" move just a standard metal/hard rock singer thing?

Lauren Hart is one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen. We caught Once Human a couple times on the last 70K, and they were fantastic. Watching a woman who looks like a damn supermodel absolutely tear up a stage with her death growls is truly something to behold.

Oooh, I like, I like. Gonna have to grab that off amazon. Reminds me a little of The Weakerthans, who I loved.

Paul Weller’s latest album On Sunset was released not that long ago. I’ve been rediscovering why I consider The Jam to be one of the greatest bands that ever existed as part of that.

The opening riff of this song is just the best thing I've ever heard. Is there some popular radio show or podcast that uses it as it's opening? Whenever I hear it I always associate it with an into....

Rush - Working Man

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

Working Man is featured in episodes of the television series My Name is Earl, That '70s Show and Supernatural, the 2011 film Goon, and a 2014 Walmart television advertisement.

It was also covered (check the link) in the series opener for a show called Transporter .

Here is an amateur's recording of the Walmart commercial

This appears to be Italian symphonic black metal with lyrics written in Latin about the graphic slaughter of the denizens of Middle Earth. What the hell am I listening to? Nice harpsichord though.

Nazgûl - Legio Draconorum Orkian

Also from Italy, some very polished symphonic black power metal. First time I've heard the Jew's harp in metal, and it's quite good.

Stormlord - Mare Nostrum

Really digging this lately. A little hard to categorize. A throwback homage to instrumental surf kinda music.
Band members are Dan Baird of The Georgia Satellites and Stan Lynch, the drummer from Tom Petty.

Wow... that harpsichord is also great, and a much larger component of that song. That sounds like a real symphony! Though I read it's still software instruments.

Also digging that Pallbearer track, it's got deep grooves and some crunchy riffs.

FGA doesn't always "hit", but when they do, they're really tough to beat. For the "King" album, they actually released all of the symphonic elements by themselves. They're good background music. :)

"The Fool" was my favorite song in 2016, and "Sugar" was my favorite last year.

They're also the band I've seen the most live. They are a ton of fun in person.

Ever wonder when a favorite band will release their next album, and you learn they did so just recently? This happened to me with Ladytron and Nightwish.

Image

Artist: Ladytron
Album: Ladytron
Genre: Darkwave
Overview: Though it's boring when an album is self-titled, here it signifies a return to form. This album retreats (partially) from the soft psychedlic pop of the previous album and brings back the the aliennating dissonance and sinister lyrics of the middle albums. It even gives a few nods to the cheesy syntho-bloops of the early albums.
Notable tracks: "Far from Home" is my favorite. "Deadzone" sounds like a sequel to earlier favorites such as "Predict the Day." "The Animals" has a pro-LGBT music video and lyrics criticizing the "woke."
Opinion: It's lengthy, listenable, and likeable. But it's not in the same league as Witching Hour and Velocifero. 5 out of 8.

Image

Artist: Nightwish
Album: HVMAN. :||: NATVRE. (or Human Nature if your Klingon is rusty)
Genre: Symphonic metal
Overview: This is a double album that continues the themes of the previous album, Endless Forms Most Beautiful. The first half is a group of 9 songs about being in touch with life, death, nature, and emotions. The second half is a 30-minute, 8-part, metal-free instrumental titled "All the Works of Nature Which Adorn the World."
Notable tracks: The upbeat "Music" and angry "Noise" (NSFW music video) are good openers that demonstrate the dichotomy of the album. The metal lullaby "Shoemaker" is destined for classic status with its epic beats, evocative lyrics, and Floor Jansen's chilling voice. "Endlessness" is interesting throughout its 7 minutes thanks to playfully innovative melodies and Marco Hietala's charismatic crooning. I like a few parts of "All the Works of Nature Which Adorn the World," but I don't think it belongs on a metal album.
Opinion: Good, though not as refreshing as the previous album which made me a fan of the band. I'm going to mostly ignore the second half of it. 6 out of 8.

I am in the minority in that I greatly prefered Nightwish as a symphonic/operatic power metal band to what they became after Wishmaster. I like at least one song from each album afterwards, but I find so much of it to be boring. Rage did the orchestral stuff so much better (and earlier) because it still sounded a lot like Rage (IMO). I need to give the new one another spin, but I listened to it on a walk and it was boring me to tears and I quickly switched to something else.
