Re: Community Appreciation Post
I can't exactly recall how to use these forum things. Still less confusing than Reddit I guess. I think my Twitter handle might still be AustinOO. (Or OOAustin) I appreciate y'all. This was a great place to learn about games and learn other perspectives. There was probably more willingness here to hear the other side of a debate more than most other online places I've visited.
I miss the creative outlet afforded by the WW games. Y'all we came up with some cool ideas. My son will talk about playing Mafia with his youth group or something and I have to resist regaling him with tales of twins, explody wolves, and triggered events. (And Lassr... Ugh Laser as Six...)

I see what you did there....
I can’t remember everyone I’ve met IRL. Had dinner with MHS, Tareeq, and Austin back in my NC days. Then met a few more folks when I lived in Florida, but can’t remember who all was there (though Austin was there again - I think he was following me around the country...). I also met the unnamed individual above’s brother a time or two; I can’t remember his forum name now, though, and I don’t think he has posted in many years.

Re: Community Appreciation Post
Wasn't there a bit of a kerfuffle after the forum moved toward censoring the posting of topless pics and there was all sorts of disagreements about moderation which led to Slambie and probably Simon and some others leaving the forum? I also remember a practical joke involving Simon and Kelric I think where Kelric was fake banned? We were a silly bunch back then. And if we're engaging in this sort of wool gathering we're pretty fucking old now.
Then there was the battle of Fucktard Ridge.

I honestly don't remember the nudity controversy. As I recall, we were pretty heavily constrained from day one due to Rip's business model (Rip hosted the servers up until the OOtage - another event that lost us a lot of people.) We did loosen the NSFW restrictions compared to Gone Gold, though.

Yeah the GG forums were a bit restrictive back then. Of course I'm not advocating to go full on beaver hunt on this forum but if this thing of ours survives to 2030 I say the the full monte and dark web transactions should be the norm!Blackhawk wrote: ↑Sat Jul 25, 2020 12:24 pmAnd Hooterloo. Yeah, those were great times and enjoyed talking and shooting with everyone! I think some good meetups eventually came out of it too.

I don't have many, and they aren't good ones, but these are all dated February 2004.
Spoiler:
We'd get a dozen or so people, agree on a game, and all play that game. Every session or two we'd go to the thread and post how we were doing, our impressions, our strategies, our thoughts. I remember doing Thief and Fallout, probably a few others, and it was a lot of fun. It was sort of a rolling, spoiler-packed community AAR.

In the case of Gone Gold, I could understand it. Rich's business required game companies, news sites, and even print magazines being able to point their entire audience to his site. He didn't want to have any reason for someone with an under-21 readership to hesitate to list his URL.$iljanus wrote: ↑Sat Jul 25, 2020 12:30 pmYeah the GG forums were a bit restrictive back then. As an aside, that's how I ended up here - a copy of either PC Gamer or Computer Gaming World had a link to GG, "The New Releases Site" and I typed it in. I haven't been able to get out since!

I remember that one NSFW thread I started and for a long time it was the highest used thread. Was even listed in the OO history page. Then everyone got old and became prudes and it went away and I stopped. But I dont think Ive ever posted a nude or topless pic. AFAIK.
BTW where is that OO history page gone? The one with all the members names and pics.

If I want to look at people in various states of undress, there are instructional videos that can be accessed, some for free and some for a nominal fee. No need for it here, I suppose.

I don't think I got too involved in the discussion about nudity. I'd just as soon not have it tho. If I want porn and nudity I know where to find it.

I played so, so much UT2k4 with you all, and still have fond memories of the tournament we ran that time (and not-so-fond memories of whoever it was who swept it by using a cheesy tactic on one particular map that there was no way around.) I played GW with the OO folks very briefly, plus WoW and LotRO.
And OO Magazine was awesome, but don't forget the original Gone Golders Magazine!

We were much younger back then. In 2004 I was 35. I remember playing UT2k4 with you guys some. I see my box of it from here too.
I keep thinking of trying LotR Online again. I was in beta in 2004 and talking to other players about switching from a 17" CRT to a flat screen and asking questions about them. Wife got me one for my birthday that May ...think the game released about that same time. Anyways the LotR free play seems very restrictive so I always end up not trying it again. I simply enjoyed playing a hobbit and fishing in the shire. And sometimes playing music...like Dust in the Wind on a lute at The Prancing Pony.

Re: Community Appreciation Post
You can't have both a gentlemen's club and a welcoming, inclusive, diverse community. I think the vast majority of us would prefer the latter. I'm as human as the next man, but gawking at women with other members of the community would add nothing to the experience for me. We still may not be particularly diverse, but that certainly wouldn't help.
As Blackhawk said, the world changed, and I can't believe it took so long. And it's obviously very much not done changing, and the change from decades past is still taking its time to infect some corners of society. But for the first time I can begin to answer the question, "How could people live in the world of 50/100/200/etc. years ago and think it was normal, and OK?"

Re: Community Appreciation Post
I think I missed out on most of the biggest OO gaming groups, though Mrs. Nym and I stuck with Cata-era WoW for a while.
I have great memories of the CIty of Heroes launch, though. With the avatar options, everyone really made an impression. I remember making friends with a guy who I don't think was a major OO contributor (I think he spent most time in an adjacent community?), but he put ton of thought into his characters and incorporated little RP details. Turned me on to Nick Cave as well. Don't recall what his name was.
And then there was Eve Online, back in 2005 when I got my wisdom teeth extracted. SkyLander (last posting in 2010) took a bunch of OO newbies under his wing and taught us many of the game's complex systems. I remember downloading a bunch of Klaus Schulze/Pete Namlook tracks and putting them in the game's music directory.

Oh, yes. I remember City of Heroes with the OO crew. I remember you, DocDarm, MrsDarm. I'd have to check through my screenshots to find the rest. I played Drumfire and Due Process, my attorney-turned-hero ("You have the right to remain silent. You have the right to have an attorney present during pummeling. You are entitled to Due Proccess!")
I only played for 30 days. I and one other person were hired to do the strategy guide for Gamespot, so I was playing 12-16 hours per day, playing for ten minutes, typing for five, playing for ten, typing for five. By the time I finished the guide I was utterly burned out on it, which sucks, as it was a really good game. The guide was published, a patch or two were released, and the guide was instantly outdated and irrelevant for anything but the maps. Guides like that just don't work for MMOs. But hey, Gamespot was paying good money for it! They didn't learn their lesson, either, as they turned right around and hired me to do Star Wars Galaxies (which, now that I think of it, I also played with OOers.)

I was in the OO group for lord of the rings for quite some time. I remember that I annoyed everyone because I found it infinitely amusing that my character in the game’s vernacular was a “man burglar”.Daehawk wrote: ↑Sat Jul 25, 2020 9:32 pm We were much younger back then. Yeah! Due Process is probably the hero I remember the best. I remember running through one of the indoor instances with you and 5 or 10 of the rest of the community, your macroed catchphrases playing as you used your Hulk-esque tank abilities. Hard to believe I have such vivid memories of so few play sessions... I doubt I played much longer than a month either, but it was a good month of obsessive play.Blackhawk wrote: ↑Sat Jul 25, 2020 10:15 pm Oh, yes. I remember City of Heroes with the OO crew. I still ask "Where's CoT in KR?" in general chat in other MMOs, but no one seems to get the reference or find it funny (surprisingly... lol). It was that game's "Where is Mankirk's [sic] wife?"

I remember you, DocDarm, MrsDarm. I'd have to check through my screenshots to find the rest. I played Drumfire and Due Process, my attorney-turned-hero ("You have the right to remain silent. You have the right to have an attorney present during pummeling. You are entitled to Due Proccess!"
I still ask "Where's CoT in KR?" in general chat in other MMOs, but no one seems to get the reference or find it funny (surprisingly... lol). It was that game's "Where is Mankirk's [sic] wife?"

Wow... that's not just a square jaw, those are polygons! Amazing how dated that looks, though it still doesn't look bad.
And no! Well, maybe they were there too. But the Circle of Thorns were on the rooftops in King's Row.

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

I missed out on a lot of that stuff. My ex-wife HATED when I would play any game, so she'd frequently find a reason to call me away from them. I could never play a game I couldn't pause or turn off immediately, so I never gravitated toward online games.

I discovered GG when looking for release date info for some game (MOO2? Diablo2? I don't remember).
Found OO sometime after GG went away.
My earliest gaming memory with you folks was a few rounds for WH40K: Dawn of War beta. Loved that game!
In recent years, I find myself in EBG a lot more often, even posting from time to time (it's been a rough few years, I shared some of it, got support and some helpful feedback, thanks!) and a fair bit of computer buying advice (thanks!).
Made it to one Octocon to meet some of you, that was pretty cool. Hope to make it again someday after the pandemic.
Anyhow, I never really found or attempted to click in any other online community. Just the occasional specific purpose visit to one site or another. Very glad this place is here, still going and likely to be around for the foreseeable future to continue hanging out at.

UT2K4 and Guild Wars are some of my best gaming memories. We put an insane amount of time into those two games and had an absolute blast. I'm pretty sure I still have in-game recordings of some of our UT tournaments filed away.Zaxxon wrote:How's about the UT2004 days? Guild Wars? OO Magazine? OONFL?
Wish I could remember where the wOOki wound up...
Like Blackhawk, I'm pretty sure that I started visiting GG after seeing it mentioned in PCGamer. I eventually got involved in the forum community, spent way too much time on someone's (Penguin something?) attempt at a persistent-world/MMORPG Neverwinter Nights server, transitioned to OO and GT when GG died, met Zaxxon and Jeff V when we spent an entire day marathon watching the extended editions of the whole LotR series at Zax's house (followed up another day by the first six Star Wars movies), then slowly faded into obscurity as more of a lurker when responsibilities of adulthood started getting in the way.
It's really crazy to think I've been a part of this community for 20 years, but it's been a lot of fun. Thank you all!
