Thanks!
JCC wrote: Sun Jul 19, 2020 9:19 pm I am in the minority in that I greatly prefered Nightwish as a symphonic/operatic power metal band to what they became after Wishmaster. I like at least one song from each album afterwards, but I find so much of it to be boring. Rage did the orchestral stuff so much better (and earlier) because it still sounded a lot like Rage (IMO). I need to give the new one another spin, but I listened to it on a walk and it was boring me to tears and I quickly switched to something else.
Another spin can make a difference. My first spin of Human Nature disappointed me as well.

Thanks for introducing me to Rage. I'm listening to Lingua Mortis now.

While I realize everyone's not interested in a streaming service, I've really appreciated Spotify's new release notifications and playlists. If someone I've listened to or follow has a new release, it will show up somewhere. The same for concerts, though I suspect this may require an artist opt-in and be promoter dependent. I'm not sure if these features are included in the free version also, but I presume they are.

Side A of the new Ensiferum didn't grab me at first listen but the back nine is pretty great.

That new Pallbearer track has continued to grow on me, it's amazing.

Cirith Ungol - Atom Smasher (1984): This is some great doomy heavy metal. I listened to and enjoyed their 2020 reunion release recently, but had never heard their original stuff. I like it, but the singer's sassy heavy metal... squeal? Wail? It's hard for me to take it seriously because it's been so heavily parodied since the 80s. It makes Strong Bad's Limozeen sound restrained.

Hyperion - Novus Ordo Seclorum (2016): This is some excellent death/melodic black. The bit about 04:00 in is amazing. Also love the solo at 05:00.

You know, it bothers me that I now automatically mentally visualize promotional text when I hear the bridge. I've seen too many lyric videos.

I'm still working my way slowly thru the 2020 SxSW download. Out of roughly 1,000 songs I've got 104 in the Keep pile, 303 Maybes, and 201 not yet auditioned.

This is probably my favorite symphonic metal track of all time. It's just so damn...epic (and very fitting for what's happening right now).

There was talk years ago about Turisas doing a musical theater production of "The Varangian Way" using songs from their first three albums. I can totally envision this as the final big cast ensemble number.

It's sad that Tursas has all but disappeared over the last few years. They were a brilliant band.

My pleasure! Rage is in the upper pantheon of my all time favorite bands. I will say after their mid 2000s work I haven't paid that much attention to them. But from the early 1990s through mid-2000s they are amazing. Always managing to tweak their sound and style (and lineup) every few albums. Singer/bassist Peavy is one of my all time favorites. My favorite album is probably The Missing Link (1993).

New Orden Ogan from their upcoming November release.

I don't know how I feel about them going going sci-fi for this album (reflected a little in the keyboards and some vocal processing on this song), but it seems like a logical theme for them to explore. I'm not expecting anything deep... it's power metal. They're sentimentalists. I already like it a lot at second listen.

Yeah, that song rocks.

Also, not the first time Orden Ogan has used vocal processing in a song - there's autotune in "We Are Pirates!" off their Easton Hope album.

31Knots remains my favourite band of the 2000s. They began as a more conventional (but excellent) math/indie rock band, but gradually transformed into sample-laden delightful weirdness. I honestly couldn't tell you whether I love their guitars, bass, or drums more.

They never formally broke up, but their three members moved apart after 2011's Trump Harm. Joe Haege relocated to Germany for several years and performed as part of Tu Fawning as well as releasing solo albums under Vin Blanc/White Wine which continued in a more keyboard/electronics-oriented direction. More recently, he underwent hand surgeries and returned to the U.S.

I really like this Fiona Apple song, but had not seen the music video until now. It has a lot more Zach Galifinakis than I had anticipated.

Man, Pyromania was such a great album. I loved Hysteria too, but they really buffed out all of the rough edges on that one, and I liked the rough edges.

Cirith Ungol - Stormbringer (2020--Heavy, Doom Metal)

This album, their first since 1991, keeps growing on me.

Mithotyn - From The Frozen Plains (1998--Folk, Black Metal)

Splitting up in 1999, key members would go on to form Falconer. While much of the songwriting is immediately reminiscent of Falconer (e.g. Upon Raging Waves, especially The Old Rover with its clean vocals) only with black metal elements, Mithotyn has a far harsher sound than its successor. Of course, it's a dramatically different band without Mathias Blad's stage-quality power metal vocals.
