It's a good thing Joe Kelly can only hit a window in his house when throwing a baseball because last night was terrible.

8 game suspension for Joe Kelly (who's appealing); one game suspension for Dave Roberts (who's serving it tonight).

I think he'll get it reduced but not removed but we'll see. I assume they are mostly mad because the teams emptied the benches without social distancing and not wearing masked.

I 100% agree it'll get reduced. I do wonder if they made an example of him beyond starting the bench clearing since he wasn't a Dodger when those teams met in the series, though.

5+ HOUR GAME. 13 innings with the runner on second and all. But the Dodgers win it and sweep the Astros. I thought this sh*t wasn't supposed to happen this year, geezus.

I think for the safety of the season MLB should implement the following procedures:

(1) since this season so far has been a disaster health / safety wise, it should be nullified and we should go back to the end of the 2019 season. All trades and contracts signed since then would be null and void;

(2) to help form safe bubbles, all starting pitchers should be put into a central 'bubble' and kept separate and tested. After all pitchers pass testing, starting pitchers should be distributed equally among the teams.

Excuse me, 4 rings. And these extraordinary times call for rational plans to provide a consistent product that will help MLB survive well into the future. I can't think of anything more impartial or balanced than what our lawyer friend has proposed. It makes no sense to stand in the way of progress.

Hey, I'm just thinking about public safety here. However that might impact one or more teams and/or any 2018 MVPs is secondary to making sure that everyone is safe and healthy.

I'm still optimistic MLB can get a full season done, but I feel like it's becoming less likely every day. Today's Brewers/Cardinals game has been postponed because of this:

I'm curious - why are you optimistic? I haven't studied the schedule - is there really enough off days to make up all these games? Or do you think if they "complete" the season, it will be because they learned to live with unequal games played and the playoffs will be on win percentage?

Apparently our new manager forgot the rules of the bullpen.

https://www.mercurynews.com/2020/07/30/ ... -concerns/
After five hitters had reached base to start the frame, Kapler finally went to the mound to pull the Giants’ struggling reliever. Rogers, however, wasn’t allowed to leave the game.

Kapler’s trip to the middle of the diamond marked the team’s second mound visit while Padres catcher Austin Hedges was at the plate as pitching coach Andrew Bailey had already gone out to see Rogers. Under MLB rules, a pitcher must remain in the game if he receives two mound visits during the same plate appearance, so Rogers was stuck watching Hedges bunt in a run on a botched fielder’s choice attempt from catcher Tyler Heineman.
Today's his birthday, so maybe he'll get a rulebook to read before tonight's game.

City of Chicago just announced that they will begin enforcing Cubs night game parking permits restrictions starting Saturday. SMH.

Maybe the the cardboard cutouts will be parking cardboard cars.

Are they seeing a lot of increased traffic or something? The handful of people on the rooftops can't really be causing that much crowding, right?

My guess is if they don't enforce it they can't make permit holders pay. So enforce it and get permit money plus any tickets.

I mean the rooftops are at social-distanced capacity. 25-50% maybe? And only patio/sidewalk bars are open. Wishful thinking if I'm being generous.

So Cespedes doesn't show up for his game today, no one knows where he is, then he declares he's opting out of the season.
Yoenis Cespedes has opted out of the rest of the 2020 MLB season, ending a hectic stretch Sunday in which the Mets superstar’s whereabouts were unknown.

Cespedes, 34, did not show up for the Mets’ 4-0 loss in Atlanta and the team initially wasn’t sure of the slugger’s status when they couldn’t get in touch with him before the game.

“He’s healthy and he’s safe,” GM Brodie Van Wagenen told reporters. “He’s decided to opt out of the remainder of the season for COVID-related reasons.”

Red Sox pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez out for the (mini) season due to COVID-related heart issues.

He contracted it prior to the season, so this isn't a new case, but he has heart complications related to COVID. Kind of scary.

They should just can the season. It's just dumb at this point. And I hope nobody ever signs Cespedes to another contract. What a coward.

And to be clear I mean how he just didn't show up. And how it looked like it's tied to him not starting every game. I have no issues with someone opting out for health reasons. Just don't be a dick about it.

I dunno, I think the best scenario is one where they go 50-10 and then lose in the first round to a team that went 25-35.

Among the 7 positives for the Cardinals' players are Yadi Molina and Paul DeJong. Cubs are supposed to start a series in St. Louis on Friday - I'm guessing it's not going to happen.

Apparently some of the Cardinals players went to a casino.

That's just ridiculous. I can kind of see how some folks 'just don't care' but when you are risking millions of dollars for other people, you can't act like a friggin' moron. I guess these players just thought they were magical or some shit. I'd suspend them for 10 games if I were Manfred and they can get actual proof. Keep in mind they get paid under quarantine but not under suspension.

MLB to begin to strictly enforce protocols.

"Major League Baseball is cracking down on coronavirus safety protocols, mandating that players and staff wear face coverings at all times, including in the dugouts and bullpens, except for players on the field of play." They could be hit with suspensions or bans if they don't.

One would have thought this would have been done on, say, day one.

As Sean Doolittle from the Nationals put it before the season started (with me putting some parts in bold):
I do think it brings to mind kind of where we’re at in our response to this as a country. Like we’re trying to bring baseball back during a pandemic that’s killed 130,000 people. We’re way worse off as a country than we were in March when we shut this thing down. Look at where other developed countries are in their response to this. We haven’t done any of the things that other countries have done to bring sports back. Sports are like the reward of a functioning society. And we’re trying to just bring it back, even though we’ve taken none of the steps to flatten the curve, whatever you want to say. We did flatten the curve a little bit, but we didn’t use that time to do anything productive. We just opened back up for Memorial Day. We decided we’re done with it. If there aren’t sports, it’s going to be because people are not wearing masks, because the response to this has been so politicized. We need help from the general public. If they want to watch baseball, please wear a mask, social distance, keep washing your hands. We can’t just have virus fatigue and keep thinking, ‘Well, it’s been four months, we’re over it, this has been enough time, right? We’ve waited long enough, shouldn’t sports come back now?’ No, there are things we have to do in order to bring this stuff back. And now you want to bring fans back? Is that safe? I don’t know. I’m not a public health expert, but we should probably defer to them on some of these issues. So I don’t know if it’s safe or not. I really don’t know. But that doesn’t seem like something that … I don’t know if that feels like a good idea or not. I don’t know.

Could we just invite Trump to throw out a first pitch at a Nationals game, and while he's distracted swap in Sean Doolittle as president? Trump could stay on as a Nationals pitcher.

I've read many tweets and interviews with Doolittle remarking on various social issues and I think a swap would be great! And we'd be willing to even give Trump to the Red Sox to help your bullpen out...
