No one is likely to bite on this personal favorite, but Wim Wenders' Until the End of the World. You should watch the 4:47 version (see the Criterion release for the best way to get this in the US). The film uses the most amazing selection of alternative artists to create a near future (from the perspective of 1991) soundtrack.

Halloween. John Carpenter's score is amazing, and it was the horror movie which initially started the killer not dying trope.

Watchmen

Lots of clock related themes and imagery.

People who read the novel basically knew what was going to happen towards the end but for those who came into the movie without foreknowledge:

the "heroes" completely fail to stop the nuclear devastation of multiple major cities, but it turns out the bad guy was right the whole time. kill millions to save billions.
