Apple Event 09/15/2020

Post by Isgrimnur »

CNBC
Apple on Tuesday announced a bunch of new hardware and some software. Here are the biggest announcements:
  • Apple Watch Series 6
  • The Apple Watch SE
  • The new 8th-generation iPad
  • The new iPad Air
  • Fitness+ workout services
  • Apple One service bundles
It also said that iOS 14, its new iPhone software, will launch on Wednesday with lots of new features such as widgets, a new way to organize your home screen, security enhancements and more.

Of note: Apple did not announce new iPhones. Those are expected at a future launch, perhaps next month.
...
Apple has announced its long-rumored services bundle, Apple One. It comes in three tiers with different services in each tier:

Individual: Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade and iCloud storage, at $14.95 a month.
Family: The same services for up to five family members, at $19.95 a month.
Premier: The same services plus Apple News+ and Apple Fitness+, announced today, for $29.95 a month.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Still no interest in an Apple watch and my hand-me-down iPhone 7 Plus is still perfectly adequate.

We have a free year of AppleTV thanks to the wife's iphone purchase earlier this year. We enjoyed For All Mankind but haven't returned since finishing that series. I have absolutely no interest in paying for it and certainly won't pony up for Apple One.

iOS 14 is compatible with these devices.

iPhone 11
iPhone 11 Pro
iPhone 11 Pro Max
iPhone XS
iPhone XS Max
iPhone XR
iPhone X
iPhone 8
iPhone 8 Plus
iPhone 7
iPhone 7 Plus
iPhone 6s
iPhone 6s Plus
iPhone SE (1st generation)
iPhone SE (2nd generation)
iPod touch (7th generation)
unchanged from last time. say what one will about Apple (and there is a lot to say...) but my 5S still gets security updates, seven years from launch. seems unlikely Google will do that, ever.

I bitch about this regularly, and get bitched at when I tell our users that I can't let them use email on their Android devices any longer because the carrier's refuse to update their devices. It's terrible. I have test devices that stopped getting updates only 2 years after purchase.

Yeah, two years is typically the case for Android phones. The Pixel series does get updates for 3 years, at least.

I'm at almost 3.5 years on my two Samsung S8+ phones (one personal, one work).

Aside from blue tinted items, this was a pretty dull event.

OK, I admit I had a mild nerdgasm during the unveiling of the A14 processor but that was about it. I'm surprised they didn't have the new iPad Air ready to purchase, maybe there's a delay with those processors in general, or they are being saved for the new iPhones.

Still getting updates? I'm impressed. Any non-Pixel Android phone I ever owned before this one (Motorola Droid series, and then a couple of LG G#'s) definitely stopped getting updates after 2 years.

Yep. They get them at different times, but usually within a week or two of each other.
