Johnny Nash, singer of ‘I Can See Clearly Now,’ dies at 80

Always loved that song.

Nash, who had been in declining health, died of natural causes at home in Houston, the city of his birth, his son, Johnny Nash Jr., told The Associated Press. He was 80.

Margaret Nolan death: ‘Beyond iconic’ Goldfinger Bond girl dies aged 76

Margaret Nolan, the actor and artist known for her appearance in the 1964 James Bond film Goldfinger, has died at the age of 76.

In Goldfinger, Nolan appeared in the title sequence and famous poster painted entirely in gold, also playing the character of Dink in the movie.

James Randi, the magician who escaped from jail cells, underwater coffins and straitjackets before becoming a scientific skeptic bent on debunking those who peddle in the paranormal and supernatural, has died. He was 92.

Randi died Tuesday "due to age-related causes," according to a post on the James Randi Educational Foundation website.

I actually spoke to James Randi once through email - in the early days of the internet. I'd sent a question regarding some paranormal thing I'd seen on a TV show and wanted to know if he'd heard of it. I was surprised to get a response directly from him and to indicate that he hadn't but he'd look into it. He always seemed (to me) like he was a class act. RIP good sir.

I just saw this on his FB page. Fuck 2020. I know he was old and sick for a long while but damn, he was one of my favorite humans. In the past, I've donated to JREF and I really hope that charity continues.

Goddammit. He was one of the people that (through his writings, along with Sagan and Penn & Teller) helped me make the transition from pagan to skeptical atheist more than a decade ago. I had a lot of respect for him.

Conchata Ferrell

Conchata Ferrell, a three-time Emmy nominee who appeared in more than 200 episodes of Two and a Half Men and was a regular on L.A. Law‘s sixth season, died Monday at Sherman Oaks Hospital of complications following a cardiac arrest. She was 77. She died peacefully surrounded by family.

Ferrell probably is best known for her role as no-nonsense housekeeper Berta on the hit CBS comedy Two and a Half Men. The role earned her a pair of Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series Emmy nominations in 2005 and 2007.

Sean Connery's death got me thinking and looking up who died this year in the world of music and Hollywood. So many celebrity deaths this year and some very big names and long time stars from back when too. All this time and now gone. RIP to one and all.

Billy Joe Shaver

Billy Joe Shaver, whom Willie Nelson once called the greatest living Texas songwriter, died this morning [Oct 28] following a massive stroke at Ascension Providence Hospital in Waco, reports Rolling Stone. He was 81.

Shaver, who took a bad fall last month and struggled with a bout of COVID-19 over the summer, had spent much of the past few months at his home in Lorena, just south of Waco. He continued to write songs, and was beginning to write his second memoir. Even as he stayed in isolation, his songs made their way through the world.

Jerry Jeff Walker

Country music singer Jerry Jeff Walker, the man behind "Mr. Bojangles," died Friday after a battle with throat cancer. He was 78.

"He was at home until an hour before his passing," his wife of 46 years, Susan Walker, told the Austin American-Statesman. "He went very peacefully, which we were extremely grateful for."

Born Ronald Clyde Crosby in New York in 1942, Walker cut his teeth in the folk music scene of Greenwich Village in the '60s. After spending a night in a New Orleans drunk tank in the mid-60s, Walker wrote "Mr. Bojangles," which would go on to become a hit and attract several covers by other famous artists including Bob Dylan, Harry Belafonte and Sammy Davis Jr.

Except that someone did replace Bob. They've stopped the daytime shows because the format is giving them problems.
Jeopardy didn't really ever require an audience but Alex had been doing it so long they had decided to close it down once he passed.

Not in my eyes. Drew is SO deadpan and emotionless its disgusting. Wish they'd never hired him. He is awful at it. Yet it continues with no life in it.

Lets Make a Deal has a good host but he is no Monty.

I think if a game show has a long standing host and they leave for whatever reason the show should just give up.

I tried watching the new version and found it almost unwatchable to the point of feeling it was rather juvenile. Sometimes old ideas should just stay old ideas and not be revived. It worked then because it was a different era.

Like many Canadians, I grew up watching him on Hockey Night in Canada with only an inkling of how good a player he was.

My wife's parents are each one of nine and only three of the 30+ aunt/uncles/married aunts/uncles have passed before she met me. The youngest sibling on her mother's side died unexpectedly on 10/30, the first of those nine siblings, via heart attack. On Sunday, my mother's partner and wife of 25 years died at 68 after years of suffering from Alzheimer's.

2020. What a year.

Patrick Quinn, co-creator of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, dies

R.I.P. Diagnosed at 30 dead at 37. Now all 3 that started the IBC are gone.

Along with Peter Frates and Anthony Senerchia, who both also died from the disease, Quinn is credited by the association with co-creating the 2014 challenge that became a viral sensation and helped support research and treatment of ALS.

2020. What a year.

Delayed reply, but it really has been. My condolences. In the past 12 months, my wife lost her grandmother, and I lost two grandparents and two great uncles. And my cat. Only one was directly attibutable to Covid, but it made the rest all the more challenging. Some funerals were skipped. Others were capped at a small number of attendees and felt unreal. I don't mean to make it a score card; some have endured far worse... and most of the family we lost had lived long lives. It's just so tough when you're hit with so many losses at once. It feels like a generation has been wiped out. Similar happened to the other side of the family several years ago. I find it silly to "blame the year" for its horrible events. But it definitely hasn't been my favourite.

80% or 8 in 10 who have died to COVID were age 65 and older. So ya it really has taken a generation.
