Cleaner, also known as Cleen and Clear Vision during different phases of the project, is a Haujobb side project. This release, Solaris, came out in 2000. I picked it up at a used CD shop on a family roadtrip to Ottawa. I had no knowledge of the group; I just bought it because of the Metropolis Records logo on the back. This track was a favourite, though I haven't heard it in years and it doesn't seem to be available on streaming platforms:

I forgot to call it "a box of pure malevolent evil, a purveyor of
insidious insanity, an eldritch manifestation that would make Bill

I finally got around to playing the new Killing Joke. And by "new", I mean 2003. I remember hearing about the new record, but I guess I never bothered listening to it. I think I thought it was bad for some reason. But no, this is very much guitar-heavy, Killing-Joke-Sounding Killing Joke. It's not 1980 post-punk Requiem Killing Joke, unequivocally the best Killing Joke, but it is a successor to 1994, ambiguously industrial-rock/metal Exorcism KIlling Joke, also a very good Killing Joke. Even though it's very heavy in the late-90s to mid-2000s alternative sense, it retains a haunting and timeless post-punk core that elevates it above the muck of that era.

well if you think the 1980 album is so good, listen to the late 70s tracks https://boomkat.com/products/the-malicious-singles - yes, i am partial to their reggae side

and i would recommend checking out the last few albums (especially Absolute Dissent) - after Paul Raven died, Youth returned as bassist/producer, restoring the band to the original lineup and releasing a series of very-good-to-excellent records in the 2010s. i particularly enjoy the four hour dub version set that Youth assembled and compiled

and i finally listened the other week to the Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin symphonic versions that Jaz did with the London Philharmonic. not a Led Zep fan, but the arrangements were good.

No idea what it is about this time of year, but The Sword is delivering the goods on this crisp October afternoon.

I really wish they'd release another album like this one and Apocryphon. Then I remember they were released 10 and 8 years ago and I wonder WTF has happened.

Takes me back to Grade 10 and I always scheduled so I didn't have a First Hour so I walked to school. There was this stand of trees in the middle of a cul-de-sac on the way where I would have a seat and a puff. I used to day dream about becoming a Working Man back then...

I'd heard Nekrogoblikon a couple times but didn't get into them until SP posted their cover of Chop Suey. Their most recent album has such an enjoyably contradictory sound. It's recognizable melodeath married with electronic pop and general silliness.

I don't know much of Rumahoy's story, but at limited listens it's hard not to dismiss them as a mediocre Alestorm knockoff that's a little more crude, a little more annoyingly meta. Though sometimes, as in the case of tongue-in-cheek copycat song/cover Stolen Treasure that's obviously intentional lol. But really, I think the world needs more poppy pirate metal, not less. Captain Yarrface's guttural vocals are basic, but I find them endearing and they certainly evoke pirateness. (He kind of sounds like Strong Mad.) Before knowing who he was, I remember him coming on stage at last year's Alestorm concert and supposedly downing a whole bottle of gin in one go. I would think that would kill you if real, but he's a large man with a potentially high alcohol tolerance so I don't really know.

Forest Party - I really like what I presume is synth pan flute.

Netflix and Yarr - Obligatory ballad that's more than the sum of its parts... at first I thought it was trite. By the end I was singing along.

French Canadian folk metal. The English is a bit rough, making the lyrics a little incoherent at times, but it's endearing.

Sami Hinkka of Ensiferum has a solo EP out under the name ssSHhh. It's pretty good, and sounds very little like his main band at all. It's industrial metal, poppy with some interesting instrumentation and female vocals on a couple tracks. (Complete with unnuanced lyrics.) It's in the vein of Pain or perhaps Die Krupps's catchier, more synth-heavy stuff.

Weight Of The World is the catchiest track, but I think the most interesting one is iConsume with it's funk guitar line.

I was wondering if you heard the re-recording:

I don't understand how this was written (and recorded) in 1986 by a bunch of teenagers. It's bonkers. This was so far off my radar at that point (I was a kid), but to hear it now is amazing.
