Damn it, Jon Lovitz is alive!

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

The last Civil War widow has died

Who knew that a widow of a Civil War veteran was still around 155 years after the war ended? Helen Jackson never talked about her status, because of the enormous age difference. In 1936, she was 17 years old and married Union veteran James Bolin. He was 93 at the time.

Rest in peace, Hooks.
Marion Ramsey, an actress and singer who appeared in the 1978 hit Broadway show Eubie! but is best known for her portrayal of the sweet, squeaky-voiced Officer Laverne Hooks in the Police Academy franchise, died today in her Los Angeles home. She was 73.

Neil Sheehan dies at 84.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Neil Sheehan, a reporter and Pulitzer Prize-winning author who broke the story of the Pentagon Papers for The New York Times and who chronicled the deception at the heart of the Vietnam War in his epic book about the conflict, died Thursday. He was 84.

Sheehan died of complications from Parkinson’s disease, said his daughter, Catherine Sheehan Bruno.

His account of the Vietnam War, “A Bright Shining Lie: John Paul Vann and America in Vietnam,” took him 15 years to write. The 1988 book won the Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction.
I read A Bright Shining Lie, really opened my eyes at the time.

Filmmaker Michael Apted has died at age 79.

He did some mainstream drama and television, but he's best known for the 7 Up documentary series, which began in 1964 and interviewed 14 British children from all classes and regions of the country. There continued to be a new installment (following the same 14 people) every seven years until 2019's 63 Up.

I've seen most of the XX Up installments. It's fascinating to see whole lives documented together and in parallel, especially since it took place with an approach and (largely) in a world where being one of these documentary subjects did not make you a celebrity.

Brilliant, brilliant book, and a fascinating approach (following the career of a true believer in the American cause) to the history of the Vietnam War.

Siegfried and Roy Magician Siegfried Fischbacher Dead at 81

Just a few months after Roy.
Siegfried Fischbacher, one half of German-American magic duo Siegfried and Roy, has died at the age of 81.

Fischbacher died Wednesday at his home in Las Vegas after succumbing to pancreatic cancer.

A malignant tumor was initially removed from Fischbacher in a 12-hour operation but it was found to have already spread in his body.

Fischbacher was released from the hospital at his own request and returned to his Las Vegas home where he was cared for by two nurses before his death.

Fischbacher's cancer diagnosis was reported just days before his death. He had reportedly been unable to see any friends or members of his family due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Grammy-winning music producer Phil Spector dies of natural causes

Actually thought he'd already died in prison.
Music producer and convicted murderer Phil Spector died of natural causes on Saturday, according to a statement released by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
An official cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner for the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office at a later date.

Phil Spector, the famed ‘Wall of Sound’ producer and architect of some of pop music’s most enduring songs whose legacy was marred by a murder conviction, has died at the age of 80.

He was a dick, but a pioneer in music.

I was sad to discover that Tim Smith of English progressive punk/art pop band Cardiacs died at the age of 59 on July 21st of last year following his second heart attack. He'd been very ill since 2008. I didn't know of them until several years ago, but their 2005 DVD recording of their 1983 track Jibber and Twitch touched me deeply and has become one of my favourite songs.

Mira Furlan has passed away at the age of 65.

Another member of Babylon 5 lost relatively early. :(

Well thats a shock. Had no idea she was not well. She always seemed so healthy and vibrant. She continues the trend of Babylon 5 stars to die young. Ill always remember her from Babylon 5 and Lost. Seems she knew it was coming. Rest well Mira. Thanks for the memories. Sad. She was born just a few months after my wife. Bless them both.
