The fact that their reaction to the fear is to buckle and vote against impeachment solely on the basis of that fear (or using fear as an excuse), that's pretty damned relevant.
Exactly. As Colbert put it earlier this week:

"The GOP: We don't negotiate with terrorists!

...we just give them whatever they want."
I think the point is that we shouldn’t underestimate how scared some of these people are of their own constituents. That’s a terrible dynamic and one that’s a huge obstacle to good, rational governance.

I also think the point is that for the few Republicans willing to go against the screams and the threats emanating from their home district, they’re deserving of at least some small measure of respect.

Definitely doesn’t absolve them of culpability for getting us to this terrible place in history, but should still be acknowledged.

I think the downside of all of this is that we're going to see a lot fewer "Angry passenger has hissy fit on an airplane" videos once all of these domestic terrorists are on the no-fly list.

That's certainly a point, but I wouldn't call it the point. These folks are our national leadership, and many of those whining now are culpable for bringing us to this point (of course, some more than others, but the entire GOP caucus is extremely culpable). It does suck that they are receiving death threats, and those threats should be run down and prosecuted to the fullest extent. But that's neither new (someone ask AOC or Barack Obama how long they've been receiving threats) nor an excuse. If you can't take the heat, don't take the job. Our nation's future is quite literally at stake. This is a storm the beaches moment. A 'four score and seven years ago.' Step up or sit down.

I understand that that sounds harsh. It is harsh. But come on.

Also, please don't tell me that you believe death threats are the main (or even a major) obstacle to good, rational governance. That would be, to put it charitably, an extreme mulligan to the GOP (especially, but also to the Dems) leadership.

At least there appear to be some consequences for being an evil goon. The best outcome is he goes broke, his whole brood is impoverished, and he and multiple family members end up in Federal prison. The first two are plausibly going to happen. That's pretty good if not entirely satisfying.

I doubt they end up broke or impoverished. They may lot be able to live the lavish lifestyles they pretended to previously, but they'll have enough protected assets and income potential (they're willing to do anything for money) to live comfortably.

@kaitlancollins

The legal team is disintegrating before it’s even been formed. Trump has told people, “Talk to Dershowitz.”

Dershowitz says POTUS hasn't asked him and indicates he's not inclined to do it.

"I'm not an actor, I'm a lawyer, and this will be a show trial," he told me. "My plan is to keep defending the First Amendment in the marketplace of ideas."

How dare Biden not take action as president before the 20th! His inability to lead this nation through the last four years has really hurt all of us.

These chuckleheads are going to spend the next decade yowling ineffectually at the moon and derailing as much as they can, with no other goal than to continue to deepen the divide Trump ripped wide open.

This type of thinking has been common in the the R base for years. When Obama was first elected I was at a breakfast meeting with my then boss who was complaining about how Obama has tanked the economy. At that point Obama had literally only been in office for 7 days. When I mentioned that the economy was bad well before Obama took office he just dismissed it. They see only what they want to see.

I think the "inaction" she's decrying is the lack of a full-scale senate investigation into Hunter's laptop, Biden's membership in the Chinese Communist Party, and Hillary's cannibalism. Her articles of impeachment are going to be a doozy.

Agreed and the degree to which her own party shuts her down is going to be very telling as to which direction the republican party is going to head over the next couple of years. If they let her run wild and actually gain traction then the party is lost.

I read somewhere else that it's helpful to think of these two new QAnon reps as what they actually are: actors.

They weren't elected to actually create policy (although their votes will push bad policy along) or do anything to legitimately help their constituents. Their primary function is to act as wind-up "OUTRAGE!" machines. Wind them up and point them at the nearest camera to say the lines and create soundbites of whatever batshit GOP talking point is top of mind that day.

I expect that they will continue to gain an outsized portion of the media spotlight (they're both exceedingly good at being attention whores) while the rest of the GOP will mostly just try to ignore them rather than actively speaking out against them. I doubt they necessarily gain any traction, but we'll always hear exactly what their monumentally stupid take is on any given topic for the next few years.

Perhaps, but that doesn't mean the Feds aren't coming for them.

'Dead men can’t pass shit laws': Queens Proud Boy busted with ammo stockpile
A far-right extremist arrested for stockpiling thousands of rounds of ammo inside his Middle Village home encouraged the murder of U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock and liberal politicians throughout “target-rich” New York, federal prosecutors said Wednesday.

Eduard Florea, a 40-year-old software engineer, was charged with being a convicted felon in possession of ammunition after FBI agents searched his home Tuesday and Wednesday. The authorities converged on his house at 76th Avenue near Elliot Avenue in an armored car suited for battle.

Authorities seized 1,000 rounds of rifle ammunition, 2,000 rounds of shotgun ammo, 75 “military-style” combat knives, two hatchets and two swords from the home, according to a criminal complaint. Florea has a past weapons charge is barred from possessing ammunition.

A magistrate judge denied bail at Florea’s arraignment in Brooklyn federal court Wednesday.

“Mr. Florea is a significant danger to the community and is a flight risk,” said U.S. Magistrate Judge Sanket Bulsara. “I think it’s evident in the statements he posted during and after and before Jan. 5 and 6.”

Florea, a self-described Proud Boy, used the social media platform Parler to threaten violence against Warnock and other Democrats the day before the attack on the U.S. Capitol Jan. 6, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Francsico Navarro.

Florea did not travel to Washington D.C. for the far-right riot, but cheered on the insurrection and pledged to continue the attack in and around Queens, Navarro said.

People seem to be saying this sort of thing as often as Susan Collins believes Trump had learned his lesson this time. How many "the party is lost" flags need to be planted for it to take hold?

I mean ... Trump was a big damn flag ... and then there were probably a dozen more easily seen flags for the last four years, from naked power grabs to extreme partisanship and refusal to see the house in flames around them. From my perspective, the GOP is lost and has become the party of unreason.

The closest historical allegory I can think of for the actions of the GOP right now is how Europe moved into the Dark Ages.
