1974 Mustang II, brown with tan vinyl top. It was made of bondo and duct tape. Sold it for $100.
1979 (?) Datsun 710, green. Sold it.
1982 Ford Escort, orange. This was my first new car. Totaled it.

1994 Saturn SC-2, turquoise. Traded it.

If you count the wifemobiles that I've shared over the years you'd have to add two more Escorts and a Subaru.
Add to my list:

2017 Mazda MX5 Miata, red. Traded the '04 Miata for it.

And Wife now has a 2010 Honda Fit that we will most likely replace in the next 2-3 years.

1974 Plymouth Barracuda – in 1981 three of us chipped in and paid like $1000, car was beat to hell, had no rear windshield, but the engine was rock solid, fixed it up over a year and drove it around together for a while, had a blast.
late 70’s early 80’s AMC Eagle or the like - after actually getting my license, family car, was green with a wood panel, ugly as hell but reliable and as sturdy as a tank
1979 Chevy Camaro – Used, bought in Hawaii in 1986 drove it for about 3 years
1982 Mazda RX-7 – Used, also bought in Hawaii around 1989, driver door would only open half the time and you had to climb in and out through the window or passenger side
1990 Chevy Cavalier Z24 – Was my girlfriend turned wife’s car, she upgraded to a Toyota Avalon and I got the hand me down
1995 Chevy Camaro Z28 – First brand new car, got a speeding ticket doing about 130 MPH the first night I owned it, thought for sure I was going to lose my license, cop never showed to court, TWICE
2003 Toyota Solara – New, great car, still own it and drive it, with over 200K miles
2005 Dodge Durango Limited – New, still runs well, about 140K miles, just gave it to my sister to use as an extra family car
2016 Jaguar XJL – Bought it in 2018 slightly used for the wife, awesome car, shame they are out of production, I would have bought another
2019 Genesis G90 – Slightly used purchased at the beginning of this year with 11K miles, another awesome car, fantastic to drive, little known gem

1974 Pontiac Grandville Broughham. The most luxury car ever.
1976 AMC Matador Station Wagon, Totalled.
1990 Chevy Cavalier

Next car is unlikely to be another Nissan after a recent disappointing service experience. Service is what got me into them in the first place.

Feeling inspired to update my list. I've owned three more new cars since I last posted in 2009, including the G37 that I mentioned was tempting me in the previous post

1989 Pontiac Sunbird
2005 Acura RSX
2010 Infiniti G37x coupe
2015 Acura MDX
2018 Audi Q7 Prestige

And I'm currently in the market for a truck so that we can tow a larger camper. Unfortunately, the truck market is totally screwed right now, with obscenely inflated used prices and a likely 6+ month wait for a new factory order that may lack some options due to parts being unavailable.

The Saturn was my brothers, but he bought another car just before I got my license, so the Saturn became mine. I drove that until the summer of 2004, when it needed to have the transmission replaced. I ended up getting my escort from CarMax, and I'm still driving it now. I hope it will last for a couple more years, but I finally paid it off and now I'm convinced it will break down at any moment.

2004 was the year we were hit by 4 different hurricanes. I pushed the Saturn under a tree that I was convinced was going to get knocked down...and of course not even a damn limb fell off the tree. I ended up selling it for $200. :x
I can only add 1 more car to this list since 2009. A 2012 Ford Fiesta.

I hate it. But it's paid off, and I hate car payments even more than I hate this pile of crap. Also, my wife's vehicle is even older and is next in line to be replaced.

Nissan screwed us royally. They had an extended warranty on the Rogue CVT transmission in certain model years because they were having issues. It failed on a Rogue with about 100K miles on it. The warranty extension was to 120K. They claimed the transfer case failed and killed the transmission. They wouldn't cover it. They wanted $6000-8000 to fix it. We ended up buying a used transmission and the guy told me it wasn't the first time he heard them avoid the repair. Never again.

Hm, I guess I missed this the first time around:

1977 Chevy Concours
1996 Honda Del Sol
2008 Chrysler 300
2008 Mazda 3
2017 Honda Accord Hybrid
2017 Honda Accord Hybrid (the first got totalled so I bought another of the same car)
2018 Honda Clarity

I absolutely love the Clarity and given that my commute is ~2 miles I plan to drive it for the next 10 years at least. It will be the last car I purchase with an ICE although with my commute I never use it. My last fill up was over a year ago.

That's not what I want to hear. Nissan was on my radar for my next car in the next few years. Maybe BEVs will come down enough to put them on the radar.

FWIW Nissan had a rough patch where their reliability ratings slipped quite a bit especially compared to other Japanese manufacturers. I had major problems with two new car purchases from them. They've improved quite a bit since then but I *personally* wouldn't give them business again out of principle how they treated us.

Wow, that's rather surprising. Usually they are sensitive to that sort of thing. My Altima was diagnosed with a failed head gasket, the day after the warranty expired (naturally). But since I made my appointment before then, they let it slide...about $7000 in repairs avoided.

My recent episode was a failed part on the air conditioner. The dealer could not pin-point the problem, one part was $350, the other $550. I had them try the cheaper one....to no effect. I took the car to a local mechanic chain, and they fixed it for $300.

If that's not enough reason, Nissan really isn't competitive in the space of the cars we're looking into next.

I should add that service is increasingly the profit center for dealers as it's now difficult for them to make bucket loads of profit from the sale of the vehicle. So maybe a hard stance when it comes to service is a symptom of that.

It's time to play What's...That...Leak?

I noticed that Wife's Fit is staining the driveway, and overlapping mini-puddles look like it's been doing so for a couple of weeks at least. Today I gave a fresh puddle a sniff test. It's not oily and it doesn't have an odor, but it's not water or it wouldn't be leaving stains.

She took it to the dealership to replace a recalled driveshaft a few weeks ago. The timing's suspicious, so I'm thinking they maybe broke a seal or something. First I gotta figure out what's leaking.

My history is pretty thin.
  1. 1988 Nissan 200SX
    • Red 2-door sports sedan with a 4-cylinder engine
    • Rear-wheel drive, automatic
    • 9 years old when I got it
    • A fun car for a young guy to tool around in, completely impractical for anyone but a single person
    • It was killed in winter by sliding down a hill into a curb, destroying a rim (worth more than the car to replace)
  2. 1995 Nissan Altima SE
    • Beige 4-door sedan with 4-cylinder engine
    • Front-wheel drive, automatic
    • 7 years old when I got it
    • Worked as a good family car after I got married
    • Killed by someone running a stop sign, destroying the back end
  3. 2008 Chevy Aveo
    • Orange 2-door sedan with a 4-cylinder engine
    • Front-wheel drive standard
    • Came with my wife, had to use it for a while before I got a new car
    • I hated this thing with a passion; I barely fit in the driver's seat and think I still have a dent in my shin from it
    • Killed by a serpentine belt repair that exceeded the value of the car
  4. 2006 Nissan XTerra
    • Seafoam Green 4-door SUV with a 6-cylinder engine
    • Front-wheel drive automatic, 4WD switch
    • Bought as a "hauling" vehicle and used little, too expensive for us to keep it on the road usefully
    • Killed by a electrical work that exceeded the value of the vehicle (mouse-chewed)
  5. 2014 Nissan Juke Nismo
    • Black 4-door crossover with 4-cylinder turbo engine
    • Front-wheel drive standard
    • My first new new car and it's fun to drive
    • Still running at 140,000 miles

Jesus you guys trade cars a lot.

88 Nissan Sentra I owned for less then a month then a 2006 Toyota Corolla. I still own the Corolla and the uglier and older it gets the better I like it. I reckon I'll own it until I die, or until I have an accident, or die in an accident, or until I can afford to buy a house and a garage with a Tesla.

Got a call from the dealer today offering to swap out my 2019 Rogue for a 2021 and dropping payments by at least $50/mo. We just finished refinancing the house (under my wife's name, as I've been a bum for 16 months now) and it really is unlikely that Nissan would do that deal under my name. Wife is looking forward to paying the thing off some day, so resetting the loan to day 1 wasn't all that appealing.

One of my HS classmates had an older car with an enormous back seat. That car was called "the pipe jet" for similar reasons.
Jesus you guys trade cars a lot.
Maybe, although for most of my cars I drove them for well over 100K miles before trading them. I used to have a fairly long commute so put a lot of miles on my commuter cars. The two exceptions to that were the 1977 Aster and the 2012 Odyssey.

The Astre (the Pontiac version of the Chevy Vega) was, charitably, not reliable. My mom got it for me as my first car, and bought it from a used car lot run by the boyfriend of my step-father's niece. When my aunt offered to sell me her 1972 Skylark (in 1985 or 1986) for $500 I jumped at the chance. An 18-year-old boy going from a tiny little 4-cylinder (at peak performance) Astre to a V8 350ci 4-barrel Skylark? What could possibly go wrong?

This Astre is not mine, but looks roughly like it.

The Odyssey was my wife's daily driver. We traded it in when the engine become irreparable.

I had major problems with two new car purchases from them. They've improved quite a bit since then but I *personally* wouldn't give them business again out of principle how they treated us.
The thing is, the attentiveness of their service department was always a plus, if something didn't work right, they'd directly fix it, and usually find a way to make it a warranty repair. This did not happen when my air conditioner took a dump. First of all, they lamented it was too bad it failed nanoseconds after the warranty expired. Then they could only narrow it down to two things: a blower motor (at $450) and a capacitor ($550). So what's a broke-ass unemployed bum to do? I gambled on the cheaper option. Naturally, that wasn't the problem.

Took it to a rising chain of auto repair joints (Mike More Miles), they replaced the capacitor for $350 (and 3 hours less than the dealer said it would take) and now it works fine. They will get my service business from now on, and the loyalty bond is largely broken.

What's a little suspect on their part is that typically you can diagnose a blown capacitor with a multimeter. Maybe this capacitor is magical or inaccessible but if not it shouldn't have been a roll of the dice decision.

1980 Toyota Cressida
- I was never on the title but I started driving it right before getting married in 1990. Decent enough car when the brakes worked but it kept chewing up master cylinders. By the mid 90s it was really showing its age (especially since it parked on the street). Perfect timing as the water pump died right about when we were ready to get our next car.
1996 Dodge Grand Caravan - we bought it when we had our first kid and I started driving it. I grew to hate this car because of the constant issues with the electrical system and the doors.
1990 Honda Civic - it had been my wife's car but when we moved my commute became the longer one and she started driving the van. Sold it to a friend in 2005 because he wanted to give his daughter a car to take off to college.
2004 Honda Civic - Second verse same as the first. Gave it to my daughter for college use in 2016
2006 Honda Civic - "Inherited" it from my mother in law after I gave away the 2004 Civic. I loved both of the prior Civics but somehow I've never really liked this one. The seating position feels off no matter what I do. We gave it to our son earlier this month to take to his first job after college.

We still own a Honda Odyssey but that has been my wife's car for its whole life. As of right now it looks like I'll be back in the States next summer and in the market for a car. Honda Civic? Probably not since I'll want a BEV.

My first car was an AMC Javelin that my father described as “baby shit brown” as he tossed me the keys on my 16th birthday.

It had a desert only setting on the AC, and it could do 0 to 60 in about 3 months.
