Keyboard and windows all screwy

Post by Daehawk »

Apologies ahead of time Im typing on a virtual keyboard with my thumbs on a 7" tablet. ..lots of typos I wont fix..

I was playi g swtor when I hit n for my companion sheet and nothing happens. I hit m for map and the quest stuff opens. I hit escape to open the menu and Im in windows looking at an now open power setti gs. Nothing is working right.

I thought it might be just kb and mouse but not sure. The pc is totally unusable. Ive ran malwarebytes and ccleaner...nothing. Its as if Ll my control setti gs are scrambled. In the bbs I click a link and it opens a new tab in ff. I cant then look in the tab beczuer it wont open...just keeps opening more on link clicks. The only way around is right click to open links.

I cznt type on the board or google help or abything...totally unusable. The power was out early but dont think that was it as Ive been using it for hours since. I dont know if its hardware, software, or malicious software.

First thoughts:
  • A stuck key
  • A driver/firmware hiccup in they keyboard
  • A wonky USB port
  • Some piece of hardware in the case going wonky
For the stuck key, tap on all of the modifier keys (alt, ctrl, shift, Windows, etc) to make sure they're loose.
For the USB port, try a different one
For the driver/firmware, uninstall, delete the associated folders, and reinstall.

In any case, I'd suggest, should it happen again, go here. It will tell you if there is any keyboard input coming through Windows (whether it is coming from the keyboard itself or not.) That may at least help you narrow it down.

Did you get your keyboard language set to some non-English layout?

Will need testing to confirm hypothesis.

I thought maybe I did. I used shift - 2 and got the @ symbol so knew it was english and not UK english. I was also in a game when it started so didn't see how some key combos may have done it. I also keep it on game mode so windows keys are disabled.

Happened again. Was posting on oo and it just quit . I unplugged the kb and checked all keys to be sure none were stuck then plugged it into a different usb port. Still borked. So I turned power off to wait a couple min and see if that helped. Hit power and nothing. No power at all...no beeps no lights no fan....completely dead.

Ive wiggled czbles and checked seatings. Dead. Leads me to think mobo or somethi g was failing to start with. Its been on for nearly 10 years. Theres no smells or smome.....just dead.

So now I have walls and a ceiling to look at. Guess Im done.

GPU 39c idle with fans off

CPU 34c

Cleaned it all when this video card arrived. It wouldn't fit in my newer 10 year old Stormscout case and had to dig out my giant old 1999 case and put the pc in it. Left out the mechanical hard drives and dvd recorder.

Do you have enough power for the card and everything else?

Corsair 850wHX

Card is a GTX 970 Asus STRIX

Im still thinking you or some other OO'r was right when they said it was a stuck key ...perhaps. You'd think if it was stuck that key would repeat forever when checked on notepad..but nope. SO then again its prob the system somehow...gah who knows. I know I will replace this keyboard when Im able.

Have you considered properly and thoroughly cleaning your keyboard? Because given your snacking proclivities, chances are you have a vein of pickled, extra-spicy, buffalo-flavoured murk that probably ought to be cleansed. ;)

hahahaha! You guys. I did a full tear down in Feb 2018 and cleaned and rebuilt it. I posted pics of the entire process. I could use a new cleanup I guess. But Im in a mind to fully replace it. I dont want another over priced Razer product. I want bright glowy keys and thats about it for my requirements.

Corsair keyboards are nice and sturdy and aren't overly flashy. The one I have has an aluminum body with red lighting.

If you're after a budget-priced glowy keyboard, the EVGA Z12 RGB Gaming Keyboard is typically available for under $30. Amazon Warehouse currently has a couple of 'Used - Like New' versions for $18.63 if you need to keep costs as low as possible.

The Corsairs are kind of expensive. The EVGA ones look neat. I can remember buying replacement keyboards in the 90s with no lights and such in Electronics Boutique for $11.

Might grab a EVGA or something next month.

Eh, they're not that expensive in relation to some of other similar keyboards from as Razer and Logitech. In fact, in terms of build quality, I find them to be a good bang for the buck for what you're getting.

I'm using a Steelseries right now, but I still think that Corsair has some of the best, most solid keyboard on the market.

If you have any other keyboard and mouse in the house, plug those in instead and use them for a while, will find out soon if it happens again or not.

And if you don't have extra, you should be able to get a keyboard/mouse combo from any place for under $15. target, wallmart, etc.
Its always good to have an extra of those, just in case.
