Nichelle Nichols, Lieutenant Uhura on ‘Star Trek,’ Dies at 89

She will be missed - not only was she a great actress, she had a certain poise and personality that was powerful and unique. She always blew me away when I saw her in interviews and as herself. She was the first black woman in a leading TV role, was half of the first interracial kiss on TV, was a spokesperson and promoter of NASA, and just an impressive individual.

Yeah, I know, it was mentioned in the other thread. Star Trek alums get their own thread.

I was just thinking last night about how few TOS actors are left. We're down the the Captain and the kids (Takei and Koenig.)

I posted in the other thread. But yes she was an amazing woman in life and career. She held the hopes and dreams for many children. From all the videos Ive seen of her at conventions she was a very sweet lady. She had her time and lived it well it seems. Bless her. She reminded me of my mother for some reason. Bless her heart she was a good person and a wonderful actress. Ill miss her being on this planet with me.

A few years ago she was a guest at GenCon. I didn’t stand in line to meet her, but the cart taking her through the halls almost gave me an up close encounter. Narrowly missed clipping me as it scooted down the hall.

RIP, and thanks for everything she did increasing the visibility of black women in science. She opened so many doors.

I didn't know she'd had an affair with Roddenberry and broke it off when she found out he was boinking Majel Barret at the same time (while he was married to somebody else).

When I saw the kiss between her and Shatner I never gave it a second thought. I didn't know it was a big deal. It wouldn't be until years later that I heard about all the controversy.

RIP. Another piece of my childhood gone. 89 is a good long trek, but the good ones you want to hang onto even longer and she was a really good one. Godspeed into the final frontier.
