RIP Olivia Newton-John

Post by McNutt »

Dead at 73.

I was just talking about her to my son yesterday. We were listening to a song from Grease. She had a great voice and I had a huge crush on her as a kid.

Damn.

Count me among the ones who had crushes. I crushed hard in Xanadu.

Rest in Peace!

It's a college football record 61 bowl appearances.
It's 34 bowl victories.

It's 15 National Championships.

At some places they play football. At Alabama we live it.

She was hot. My wife hated her. Another hot celeb from my childhood gone. I was always afraid her breast cancer would kill her. Im guessing thats what it was. Says her sister died of brain cancer a few years ago. RIP

Rest in peace Olivia.

I'm pretty certain she wanted to get physical with me, so you guys may need to curb your enthusiasm.

I too fantasized about getting physical with her as a teen.

I was just talking about her this past weekend when a video from Grease for "You're the one that I want" was playing. We were wondering how old she was now.

73, too young. RIP.

She might have been my first crush or maybe it was Sheena Easton.

Regardless, Olivia Newton John just always seemed like a wholesome woman.

RIP

I remember watching Grease as a kid with my parents (I was probably 6) and all I can wonder now is, what the hell were they thinking??!

Either way, as someone squarely in the MTV generation, I have very distinct memories of the video for Physical, which I suppose is her legacy for me. If you haven't seen it recently...man..the 80s were a crazy, crazy time.

Regardless, I know she did so much more and was an advocate for cancer and various other charities; she seemed like a genuinely good person.

RIP

I saw Grease with my dad and step mom in a theater. I remember going in not being happy because the name sounded silly but it turned out I loved it even if I was 9 years old. I even got the 8-track for the music. My wife didn't like her and I think it was because she was cozy with Andy Gibb who my wife had a thing for. Jealousy is such a stupid emotion.

Yeah this one really sucks. Add my name to the list of young boys who were totally in love with her. I mean damn - think about trying to resist this little white outfit as a kid in the 80s:

Grease was always a favorite movie/soundtrack growing up. And I wound up marrying a woman literally named after her. I remember when I was dating my wife riding around listening to Olivia Newton-John's Greatest Hits CD over and over.

She was a treasure.

I remember her from when I was in the Air Force. A buddy of mine had an album or two of hers. As soon as I saw that face I was in love.

She was one of the acts that pushed me towards punk rock back in the day. I suppose she deserves credit in a back-hand way? The years have softened my criticism of her and others, but I do appreciate the struggle she's had to endure over the years.

I don't believe that the sentiment "Xanadu never really did it for me" is all that controversial.
Roger Ebert, 1 September 1980 wrote:"Xanadu" is a mushy and limp musical fantasy, so insubstantial it keeps evaporating before our eyes. It's one of those rare movies in which every scene seems to be the final scene; it's all ends and no beginnings, right up to its actual end, which is a cheat.

There are, however, a few - a very few reasons to see "Xanadu," which I list herewith: (1) Olivia Newton-John is a great-looking woman, brimming with high spirits, (2) Gene Kelly has a few good moments, (3) the sound track includes "Magic," if you haven't heard it enough already on the radio, and (4) it's not as bad as "Can't Stop the Music."

It is pretty bad, though.

Re-watched ‘Grease’ the other night with the kids. ONJ was 30 playing a high school kid!

First thing one of my kids said was ‘how old are these people?!’ :P

Actress that played Rizzo was 35 or 36 (and looked 40 IMO).

Watch the Porky's movies (well, only if you're a masochist). Most of the "kids" in that look closer to 40 than they do 17. Sidenote: without Porky's we would never have had A Christmas Story though. Same director/writer behind both, but they would only let him do A Christmas Story if he made Porky's 2.

Saw Porkys in the theater with my dad and step mom when I was 12. A bit went over my head but it was fun anyways.

I've never seen Grease. Have seen bits and pieces over the years but never the whole thing at once.
