ID this snake

Post by Unagi »

Can anyone tell me what kind of snake this is? Seen in a suburb of Chicago, but may be an escaped pet.

I've searched for half an hour and I can't really find anything like it.

Certainly isn't a garder.

Pretty certain it's not a breed of Gopher snake. Or Bull snake.
Nor does it really look like Hognose.

Yeah, hard to say. Or diamond shaped.

I'm leaning toward a Corn Snake... but man, I've been looking at various species of various snakes - and really none of them have that light 'banded' thing going along with such clear dark spots.

The head looks a lot like a corn snake.

I honestly thought this would be simple - and it's not.

I killed one of those by accident thinking it was a copperhead. I was really pissed at myself when I found out it was a corn snake.

Huh. Doesn't look like anything I'm finding for that area. You may be right on the 'pet' angle.

Not remotely.

The head is all kinds of wrong, and then it also doesn't have any banded-ness at all.

Yeah, I had looked at a number of the hognose - but really - it just didn't seem to have that pattern at all.

I'm leaning more Corn Snake.

Hognose snakes around here look nothing like that. More like a small olive drab coloring.

I have to agree with isg. I was going to post before but work got in the way. That is a hognose snake. They vary widely in color but if you look at the head and the pattern there, that is strong clue.

Need a new pic. Head and eyes would help. Also where in the world is the snake located?

It could be an escaped pet snake, but the picture was from a suburb of Chicago... So, think Wisconsin/Michigan if you want, but the escaped pet angle can take it a lot of ways.

After long and careful study I will cautiously identify it as the eastern hog nosed snake.

a LENS snapshot on my phone says Hognose also as the #1 suggested identification.

Google Fox snake images. Some are pretty close -- and they are indigenous to the area.

There's not a ton of snakes in the Chicago area. It's not a gardner or water snake. Corn snakes are similar, but their coloring is more on the bronze palate. Fox snakes have a variety of coloring and patterns similar to what you saw.

And we don't know the ambient light color when it was taken. The colors - as we're seeing them - could be off. I've seen storms, for instance, that made everything an intense yellow-green.
