"All right, mechwarrior." Leraje tells our prisoner after coming back, clapping Xwraith on the shoulder. "My direct subordinate here..." he adds with a sly grin. "Will escort you to the hangar, get you set up with quarters and one of our Hunchbacks."

Xwraith shoots Leraje a dirty look.

"Hey, if you ever want a leadership position, you have to learn to lead." Leraje adds with a shrug.

Xwraith frowns. "I never said I wanted a leadership position."

Leraje grins. "Yeah, well, sometimes the leadership position wants you. Now get to it."

---

"A Hunchback?" Lucy asks Xwraith as the two mechwarriors walk towards the Thunderball's outer hangar door, the Overlord-class dropship looming menacingly over the surrounding terrain. "I am partial to the Hunchback IIC design myself, it is an excellent ambush mech."

Xwraith giggles, an uncharacteristic reaction for the forty-two year old mechwarrior, looking around at a salvage crew walking a flatbed truck loaded with busted-up mechs towards the nearby Jumbo. "She thinks she's getting a clan mech." she says, laughing and pointing a thumb towards Lucy. The salvage crew doesn't laugh, not understanding the context of the joke. Plus, most of our techs tend to think of the mechwarriors as weirdos. The sentiment is usually reciprocated, but the two groups work together well enough.

"No, no, it's just a regular Hunchback. Well, we upgraded it a little, so it's better than the original 4G; and even better than the 5M, we stuck some extra ammo in there so you don't run out after five seconds." our mechwarrior explains. "But if you think you're getting jump jets and twin ultra-20s, you're sadly mistaken."

Lucy looks crestfallen. "I see."

Xwraith claps her on the shoulder. "Look on the bright side, kid, we're almost done with our contract here anyway, we'll be gone soon enough. Now, let's go meet your tech team. But before you do... " Xwraith fixed Lucy with a pointed stare. "... I'm watching you. Remember that."

The distribution hub itself is quite well-defended. Our recon patrols identify multiple stars of light and medium mechs, supported by ground attack tanks (including some that appear to have been salvaged from the local planetary militia). There are also two mixed heavy/assault mech stars.

Trying to hit the facility all on our own would be... inadvisable - we don't have the capability to take down that kind of force concentration. But what we can do is raise enough of a ruckus that we pull most of the defenders away. A well-disciplined Inner Sphere force would never... well, they'd be less likely to leave a strategic objective to go chase down some sensor contacts. But our liaison suggests that, if we issue a challenge while calling the genetic quality of the mechwarriors stationed at the distribution hub into question, they might take it personally.

So, we bring Gamma and Beta lance (Wolf/Hellbringer, TheMix/Mad Dog, Backwash/Griffin, 9B/Archer; Zenn7/Awesome, Siljanus/Mackie, Atrophy/Annihilator, CJ/Victor), backed up by a short lance of heavy tanks - two Manticores and the Schrek PPC Carrier. The liaison tells us he has arranged for a lance of heavy tanks operated by the local resistance fighters to participate in this diversionary attack as well.

TheMix's Mad Dog was having some trouble with one of its LRM magazines, so it's coming in a little short on LRMs, but is in pretty good shape otherwise. One of Atrophy's LBX autocannons still hasn't been repaired, but three LBX/10s is still a pretty good number of LBX/10s.

Gamma and the tanks will attract attention, with Beta moving in once the clanners have committed to the engagement. All of this should give El Guapo's Alpha Lance time to move in on the distribution hub and take it down.

Round 1:
Spoiler:
Image
The local resistance guys actually show up this time, but get detected by a light clan patrol. One of the clanners, a fast hovercraft, peels off into the distance, but the rest take the opportunity to swarm the slow, ponderous Kurita tanks while our mechs and tanks are still out of range. The guerilla guys actually get a few good hits in - a Hoplite has its left arm (and most of its left torso section) blown off after being "contacted" by a solid LRM salvo, while a Thorn is basically dismembered by multiple internal ammo explosions.

However, two of the LRM Carriers get blasted to bits, while the Manticore is forced to cover the withdrawal of the third.

"Stupid bastards are always either too early or too late." TheMix muses.

Round 2:
Spoiler:
Image
The guerilla Manticore's turret is not-so-surgically removed by weapons fire from the various clanners as we don't quite make it into weapons range.

Round 3:
Spoiler:
Image
Our mechs advance to maximum weapons range, exchanging a little fire with the clanner's long-range units. A Talon brushes TheMix's right arm with a PPC shot while Wolf plants a PPC shot on the clanner Crab, almost completely degrading its left arm armor.

Round 4:
Spoiler:
Image
TheMix steps behind a few rocks, zeroing in on the Talon that's been sending PPCs his way and fires the Mad Dog's pulse lasers, adding some LRMs for good measure - the Talon rocks under multiple impacts, but its armor holds.

Round 5:
Spoiler:
Image
"Back up, lance. Reinforcements are almost here." Wolf tells everyone as the clanner charge picks up steam, their hovertanks and light mechs moving forward.

Round 6:
Spoiler:
Image
It's always a relief when our assault lance shows up. Siljanus opens up with the Mackie's PPCs, blasting through the armor on what must be a salvaged Galleon tank (having no idea why a clan force would be using one of the lowest-end Inner Sphere vehicles); the light tank stops moving and begins emitting large clouds of black smoke instead.

Atrophy helps work on the damaged Crab, blasting it with a couple of LBX pellets - it's left arm looks a little sluggish and throws out sparks, indicating actuator damage. Zenn7 zaps it as well, particle streams crackling through the left torso armor, while CJ adds a gauss slug to the center of mass.

Wolf runs south, immobilizing a localized ECM source - a Zephyr hovertank - by melting through its drive and lift fans with the Hellbringer's lasers. A substantial amount of firepower is directed at our mech, but mostly goes wide, with only a few shots hitting. Still, the Hellbringer's leg armor turns yellow.

Round 7:
Spoiler:
Image
It's less of a relief when two stars of clan vehicles and another mech star show up to pincer our force. In fact, it's not a relief at all. Our tankers, who have fallen behind the mechs slightly, voice their displeasure.

"Right, that's enough of that." Zenn7 transmits. "All units fall back on Beta's position and withdraw. Alpha Lance will have to make do with the time we've given them."

"We definitely got their attention." TheMix comments, ducking down as lasers come in from all corners, firing pulse lasers of his own back at a Hussar, nearly cutting off its left arm.

Our Schrek gets a clan transport chopper zipping in to unload some infantry next to it - the gunnery crew wastes no time in frying two of the troopers as they zipline down. This is a distraction however, as a clan Jenner (although it's mass reads a good amount heavier) zips up and unloads streak SRMs into our tank, blasting away enough treads that it gets mired in the ground and is no longer able to move.

Zenn7 switches targets, blasting away at a mech identified as a Night Hawk. Both of its arms are fried by the Awesome's PPCs, which should drop its firepower a good amount.

Siljanus, meanwhile, targets the Crab again, knocking it down to the ground with another pair of PPC shots. CJ hops down into a small depression where a "Lightning" hovertank has attempted to hide from our assault mech, but one of our Manticores has already gotten to it, blasting through the skirt with an SRM salvo and immobilizing it.

Round 8:
Spoiler:
Image
As we pull back, the light clan units close in. Siljanus targets a Talon, firing just the two PPCs to conserve heat - one of them connects with the right arm, disabling the PPC there. Not quite as good as a mech kill, but every time you take one of the extended-range PPCs the clanners have out of play, that's a good thing. CJ scores a glancing headshot on the same mech, carving out a canyon on the top of its head and giving the mechwarrior a good scare.

9B backs her Archer up, firing LRMs at an approaching Zephyr to cover TheMix as he retreats north - half the salvo strikes true, but it's enough - the hovertank sends a cloud of metal chunks spraying out the back and carves a ditch in the ground before grinding to a stop. TheMix takes a few shots, including an armor breach, but no critical damage and returns fire, breaching armor on a Hussar. Not that that's particularly hard, given that it's an ultra-fast light recon mech, but still.

Round 9:
Spoiler:
Image
As our retreat continues, a pursuing helicopter gets a little too close to Atrophy's Annihilator and gets completely shredded by the mech's LBX autocannons.

Round 10:
Spoiler:
Image
"Hey, look at that, they even got a few assault mechs coming after us, now Alpha is going to have a really easy time." TheMix comments.

"Too bad we're not." Wolf retorts.

Siljanus takes out one of the pursuing hovertanks with a well-placed PPC that shears off its left drive fan, causing it to circle around crazily before mashing into a nearby rock. The Night Hawk has been continuing to plink away at us with its large laser, so Zenn7, conserving heat, places only two PPC blasts into its torso - with previously registered engine damage, the loss of a torso section forces a shutdown, taking the mech out of action.

Backwash has nothing better to shoot at, so fries a couple of clan infantry searching through our Schrek's wreckage, hopefully allowing the tank's crew to clear the battlefield while the clanners are paying attention to the mechs.

Round 11:
Spoiler:
Image
"All right, everyone, leapfrog and disengage." Zenn7 transmits, sending a few PPC blasts at a pursuing Crab. Its right arm droops, while heat readings spike and a green mist sprays out from its right torso - likely a destroyed heat sink. A gauss rifle shot from CJ to the center of mass nearly comes out the back, knocking a rear armor plate loose, while Wolf fries the mech's left arm with another PPC shot. The loss of both arms leaves the Crab with a single medium and a single small laser - pretty minimal armament.

Backwash and Siljanus disable another pursuing Zephyr hovertank, and then we're in the clear.

"All right, Alpha. We've bought you an extra two minutes." Zenn7 sends over long-range comms. "Good luck."

---

Lucy and Xwraith monitor the action in real time in our Overlord.

"Quite the cowardly trick." Lucy comments. "But effective."

"Yeah." Xwraith replies. "At the end of the day, we're just here to do the job and get paid. If fighting Star League quality assault mechs isn't part of the contract, there's no reason for us to do it."

Lucy's face wrinkles. "How do you sleep at night, when you fight for money, rather than an actual worthwhile cause?"

Xwraith shrugs, smirking. "Just fine, on top of my giant pile of money."

"Plus, it's not just for money. We're a team, we look out for each other. We even used to have... " the mechwarrior pauses. "... well, never mind. You'll hear about that later. Suffice it to say that even if you are loyal to a cause, or a nation, or a principle... you're not going to get your loyalty returned. Not in the Inner Sphere. Maybe out there in clan space, it's different, but I doubt it." Xwraith scoffs. "Your codex said you fought in two Trials of Position. What was the second one for?"

Lucy frowns, looking down on the floor. "I don't want to talk about it."

Xwraith smirks. "I thought not."

---

Alpha Lance is about to hit the distribution depot. Thanks to Beta and Gamma lance's efforts, it will be some time before that swarm of clan mechs and tanks gets back there, leaving it only moderately defended - a lance of hovertanks and a heavy mech lance - three Black Knights, an Exterminator and a Sentinel. No front-line stuff, thankfully, but the heavies will be a mouthful. And a few automatic stationary turrets, but those don't really count. Except the quad medium laser, we'll want to watch out for that.

What did El Guapo bring for the attack?
[] Two Chaparral Arrow IV artillery vehicles
- No TAG capability, but artillery will be useful to take out stationary targets.
[] Two Meteor-class conventional fighters, with fuel-air bombs
- Non-zero risk of them getting shot down on the way in and out, but if they can drop their bombs, that distribution center is going bye-bye
[] Pair of hovertanks
- A little extra all around firepower

Also, battle armor or infantry support is available for this mission:
[] Use Waddles to deploy minefields along the base approach
-Hovercraft won't be affected, but maybe that heavy mech star could use a little less leg armor
[] Crew-served field guns
-Kind of fragile if the clanners decide to shoot at them, but can do some damage too
[] Standard battle armor
-A little on the short-range side, but could be useful in keeping hovertanks off of Alpha

Make sure to paint "Hindenburg" and "Hindenburg II" on the fighters. That should satisfy his need for blimps.

Blimps! hehehe.... Yeah, good with the Meteor fighters.

Not so good with the standard battle armor. Let them do minefields. The gift that can keep on giving after we leave if it doesn't fully do the job now.

I agree with that.

And the relabeling will have to do until the company commander develops some goddamn foresight about the future of war.

"Beta-Lead to Alpha-Lead. Be advised, you have approximately three minutes before overwhelming forces close in on your position." Zenn7 tells El Guapo.

"No problem. We'll have it done and be out in two." El Guapo replies.

Our last target - a regional distribution hub. Defended by a lot more, but we have drawn off most of the defenders, at the cost of losing a tank. Alpha Lance is El Guapo/Dire Wolf, Cylus/Grasshopper, Thud/Hunchback and Isgrimnur/Penetrator. Backing them up are two Meteor-class fighters and two squads of battle armor.

The remaining defenders are a full star of Zephyr hovertanks, three Black Knights, an Exterminator and a Sentinel. They're no joke certainly, but we don't have to take them down, just the buildings they're guarding. A little bit of a time limit there - if we don't hurry it up, we're going to have an assault star and a swarm of hovercraft/light mechs breathing down our necks.

Round 1:
Spoiler:
Image
El Guapo waddles the Dire Wolf forward, opening up at long range and targeting a Black Knight that crests a hill. LRMs and LBX rounds fly out following lasers, melting and chipping armor away from the 75-ton mech. The return fire isn't too effective, lasers going every which way but at our mechs.

Our aircraft waste no time delivering their ordnance. One takes a PPC to the tail, smoke and metal chunks emerging from the back of the aircraft. And then the thermobaric warheads go off - first the little mist and then a conflagration as the flammable compound ignites.

Ronud 2:
Spoiler:
Image
With the number of sensor contacts reduced by about 50%, our mechs continue their advance. El Guapo and Isgrimnur target the lead Black Knight as autocannon rounds and laser blasts spray harmlessly against our Dire Wolf. Lasers cut into the Black Knight's armor, followed by LBX pellets - one incredibly lucky pellet follows a laser and slices through the main connecting strut between the 75-tonner's torso and hip, snapping the leg off and sending the heavy mech to the ground. That does enable it to avoid Cylus' lasers and most LRMs, though.

Our damaged Meteor takes a few more hits, but the aero jock manages to keep the fighter in the air and fly off, starting the return trip back to our dropships.

Round 3:
Spoiler:
Image
Our "lighter" mechs advance, absorbing a little PPC fire from the Black Knights over the hill - the downed one hasn't quite given up yet, so Cylus helps him along by directing the Grasshopper's medium lasers at its head, removing it.

Round 4:
Spoiler:
Image
We direct our firepower at the next Black Knight, melting and cutting more armor with our lasers. Isgrimnur brushes one of the Penetrator's large lasers across the enemy mech's head - the armor holds, but barely.

Round 5:
Spoiler:
Image
Cylus moves up the hill as the Black Knight falls back, taking advantage of Isgrimnur's previous head shot to run the Grasshopper's up the heavier mech's torso. The remaining armor and structure of the Black Knight's cockpit melts and it drops to the ground.

"This is Mechwarrior Lutz of Clan Nova Cat. We have no chance to defeat your force, and I humbly request hegira." comes the transmission over the general frequency.

El Guapo huffs. "Told you I'd get it done in two."

Yeah, does "hegira" mean that their compatriots have to acknowledge our victory and sit there while we take the salvage? Because if that's not a 100% guarantee, I am inclined to scoot before they arrive.

Yeah, if we can get them to formally acknowledge that the two Black Knights are now ours by virtue of victory in combat, they'll stand by and let us take them. They might not, though and tell us to go pound sand, and then we'll have to scoot.

Agreed. Gotta try for the loot and the salvage was won in battle so that should be somewhat honorable. If they refuse then we should wipe out as many as we can on the way out.

"Sucks having to leave those Black Knights behind." Xwraith states, monitoring the battle with Lucy from the Thunderball's command deck.

She smirks. "Perhaps you could challenge them to a trial of possession. It seems that your mechwarriors may be up to the task."

The idea very quickly makes it up the chain of command and then back down to El Guapo.

---

"Clan forces, this is Captain Patrick Allain of the First Octopus Overlords. I uh... challenge you for posession of the two Black Knight chassis that my forces have just destroyed. " El Guapo begins cringing slightly - it still sounds kind of stupid to declare your objective and what you'll be fighting with ahead of time, but at this point they already know. "And any additional salvage generated as part of the process." El Guapo continues, getting into it a little bit. "To make it fair, I only intend to use my Dire Wolf."

"This is Star Commander Maria - very well, Spheroid. We will fight augmented, in battlemechs. My force, you have already seen - Black Knight, Exterminator, Sentinel. Additionally... " El Guapo thinks he detects a sly tone somewhere in there. "... you must defeat us before the our reinforcements arrive, or you will have forfeited the challenge."

"If you say so." El Guapo replies. "All other units, cease fire."

"Well bargained and done, Spheroid." the Nova Cat star leader replies.

Our Dire Wolf moves up, a PPC shot from the Black Knight melting some torso armor. In return, the LBX autocannon barks, sending pellets clustering around the heavy mech's head, sparks flying out as external sensors and components are damaged.

Round 2:
Spoiler:
Image
Ultra autocannon rounds and LRMs throw up dirt around El Guapo while our mechwarrior continues firing at the Black Knight - a laser melts a good amount of armor from the left arm, a salvo of LRMs clusters around the heavy mech's foot, while LBX pellets continue pinging away near the head. The clan mech rocks but remains upright.

Round 3:
Spoiler:
Image
The Black Knight catches a break as its little Sentinel buddy runs forward, and is able to score a PPC hit on El Guapo's right leg, frying some armor. El Guapo opts to target the Sentinel, figuring a quick kill is just what the doctor ordered - pulse lasers lash out and breach armor in multiple places along the "medium" mech's right side (the Sentinel is a medium mech in the sense that it's 40 tons so it's officially classified that way). One laser makes its way across the Sentinel's head, while a generous application of LBX pellets causes its right arm to sag and stop moving.

Round 4:
Spoiler:
Image
The Sentinel moves to take cover behind a slight rise, pinging a few autocannon rounds off El Guapo's left leg. El Guapo returns fire with large and pulse lasers, adding some more LBX pellets for good measure - the Sentinel stumbles as its torso is shredded, then a pair of secondary explosions send the autocannon "arm" and whatever was left of the other arm flying.

"That's one down." El Guapo comments.

Round 5:
Spoiler:
Image
The Exterminator is the next "victim" - it moves up on El Guapo's right flank, intending to split our mechwarrior's attention from the Black Knight. Not unreasonable - the heavy mech is able to cut some armor off our Dire Wolf with its laser array, but the Exterminator loses a lot more from El Guapo's lasers and constantly-barking LBX autocannon, staggering a bit and spoiling its aim.

Round 6:
Spoiler:
Image
"All right, time for the fat guy tuba song." El Guapo says with a smirk, running out of the woods to intercept the jumping Exterminator. The Black Knight makes an effort to stop our mech, but it's a 100-ton assault mech and its armor just doesn't deplete that fast. Meanwhile, the Exterminator registers multiple armor breaches, a head shot and some actuator damage, before its left leg is more or less ripped off - in fact, the shoulder-mounted LRM launcher above said leg throws sparks and gets knocked out of alignment, hanging loose as the Exterminator topples and stops moving.

"Next." El Guapo continues his running commentary.

Round 7:
Spoiler:
Image
The two remaining mechs close in on each other, El Guapo exploiting earlier damage to hit weak spots in the Black Knight's armor. A laser brushes the rest of the armor off the head, while LBX pellets cut through exposed internal structure, knocking the enemy mechwarrior out, causing the left arm to go limp and puncturing both the engine shielding and gyro housing.

The enemy mechwarrior's defiant last act is to focus all his firepower on the Dire Wolf's right torso. It pays off, and El Guapo cringes - the neurofeedback is painful enough that it causes white spots to appear in the mechwarrior's vision as the mech's right arm goes flying off and some of the LBX ammo blows. It also takes him a few seconds to realize that he's actually floating through the air, a parachute gently fluttering above his ejection seat.

"Slag it, that hurts." he calls out over the general frequency. "Can we call it a draw?"

"Aff, mechwarrior." comes a pained reply from the mechwarrior in the Exterminator. "I believe you have melted my superior officer, as his life signs are at zero."

With this facility destroyed, that completes the terms of our contract. The liaison confirms this, congratulating us on a job well done and queues up a comms request for payment transfer authorization (to be transmitted from our jumpship to the nearest HPG as soon as we get to a system that has a friendly one). Our dropships burn for the zenith jump point, unchallenged, dock with our jumpship, then everyone's guts get turned upside down as the jumpship violates the laws of physics to displace itself by twenty light years in an instant.

El Guapo pays a visit to Zenn7's quarters, a compression bandage and an icepack still around our mechwarrior's head, expecting to get chewed out for the excessive repairs that will be needed to the Dire Wolf after that ammo explosion. Walking in, he is hit by a sweltering wave of heat.

"Geez, are you all right, Major?" he asks Zenn7. The slightly older mechwarrior appears to be shivering, despite the fact that it must be 30C in his quarters.

"Yes, yes. Close the door before you let all the warmth out." Zenn7 responds, irritated.

El Guapo frowns. "You weren't out on the bridge as usual during the jump. We had to do 'jump-shot' without you."

Zenn7 sighs. "Yeah. I don't usually get transit disorientation syndrome, but I must have spent half a day in here, puking."

El Guapo continues frowning. "You better see a doctor about that, Major. People don't usually 'pick it up' without something having changed internally."

Zenn7 shrugs. "Nah, I just haven't gotten enough time in my mech recently. Anyway... " he looks up from his desk. "... let's talk about repairs for rare or hard-to-acquire requipment..."

"What do you mean, 'recommend against it?'" Zenn7 asks, his jaw clenched.

"I would recommend against operating a battlemech until you've had a full neural scan." the doctor replies, probably for the third time. It took a lot of harassment for his subordinates and another half-day puking session, but Zenn7 finally decided that they may have a point. "My theory at this point is that you're suffering from some kind of neurological decay."

"How?" Zenn7 asks.

The doctor shrugs. "Probably strapping yourself into a sweaty chair above a fusion reactor while wearing a heavy helmet that constantly zaps your brain with electric current doesn't help, especially when you do it for forty-plus years in a row."

Zenn7 smirks. "I suppose not." He sighs. "Do they have the medical equipment on Outreach or am I going to have to travel all the way to Terra or New Avalon?"

"Outreach will be fine." the doctor replies.

---

"To be honest, though, that new Awesome just isn't the same as the old one." Zenn7 begins, waving around a bottle of Timbiqui Dark. "It's been four years and I still can't get the ass groove right, the helmet never fits like the old one, the throttle always sticks a little too much... it's almost like I left a part of myself back on Zoetermeer." he adds, in an almost inaudible mutter.

The command staff, seated around the company commander's office - Freyland, Leraje, El Guapo, Lich and Wolf look at each other uncomfortably.

The mechwarrior scoffs. "No idea what I'm going to do with myself if I'm not driving a mech, though."

Leraje smirks. "You can buy yourself an island, a yacht and a nice house with your retirement payout."

Zenn7 shrugs. "If I wanted to do that I could have done it before the clans showed up. Hell, I could have done it before the war of '39. I'm the last one of the original crew." he begins. "I know you guys will do just fine if I retire... I just didn't want to. But with this melting brain issue... " he trails off.

"Don't worry, Major." Leraje states, the other mechwarriors nodding in agreement. "We'll keep the flag flying even if you have to hang up the neurohelmet. We're no Gray Death Legion, but we'll do all right."

---

[AN: As you folks may have noticed, updates have slowed considerably over relatively recent time - a far cry from "once a day". It's a combination of several issues, including changes at work, taking on other creative projects and "mechwarrior endgame syndrome" - the actual tactical component of the game isn't quite as challenging with a collection of ultra-elite badasses driving top-of-the-line mechs. As such, I'm going to take a sabbatical for a few months, during which time I hope to make some updates to contract and storyline creation, and maybe upgrade the bot a little.]

This has been amazing, as always. The only thing that even comes CLOSE is the XCOM Brutesquad AAR's we had on here. Take your time and refresh. Hell, I'd consider this more than I bargained for and would be fine with the closing out of this storyline! Thank you for letting us be a part of your world for a while!

Brain melting... huh... of all the ways I thought I'd go, that one definitely never crossed my mind. Unless it was melted by a laser penetrating my cockpit... heh.

Well, the company will be fine, the old crew got these guys up to speed on the basics and they've really come into their own now. They don't really need me any more.

What the hell will I do now though? Thought I'd be in that cockpit til I finally met my match and died. Must be what the clanners feel like when they don't die in battle maybe.

Brrr... it's only 32 degrees (C) in here... <turns up the heat to 35>... <drifts to the long sleep> ...

Thanks again Nick, been a hell of a run! Look forward to whatever else you might share with us. :)

I hear that combat blimps don't use the same neural interface as mechs.
