The Coming War - Trump vs. Desantis

Post by Grifman »

Maybe Desantis is not going to challenge Trump, but all the signs are there. I’m not certain why, unless he is expecting Trump’s legal problems to weigh him down:

Just to be OO picky, we already have an active DeSantis thread. All this seems to belong there.

How have I lived 49 years and never heard or read the words ‘cunt’ and ‘voice’ together?!

Just when I think I’ve seen it all, this ol world throws a bone to me and puts a wry smile on this curmudgeon’s face.

You need to watch The Boys. That particular word is, apparently, a universal adjective.

At least if you want to sound like Butcher.

I'm increasingly of the view that DeSantis won't run (and that the Republican primary "field") will just be Trump plus one Never Trump Republican who will be ignored / trounced. DeSantis can't challenge Trump without being willing to say that Trump is wrong about something, and I don't think he'll be willing to say that.

Not to be picky, but this is not about DeSantis - this is about Trump vs. Dessntis, which 1) ought to be obvious from the thread title and 2) is a totally different topic.

Trump going scorched earth:

It would be interesting to see DeSantis fire back. I don’t think he would lay down for Trump as people like Rubio and Cruz did.

He's in a very delicate spot. He has to woo Trump's voters and never alienate them. He might attract some big-money funders who have Trump fatigue, but he can't win anything without Trump's base of voters. His only option is to be the obvious substitute if Trump dies or slips into a coma or goes to prison.

This will be the whole story of the 2024 GOP primary (if they even have one): Cruz, DeSantis, Rubio, etc will all be running against each other for that back-up slot.

If the actuarial table catches up to Trump, I hope it’s the day after the deadline to put a different candidate on the ballot.

DeSantis is definitely going to challenge Trump now. He crushed it and so many Trump supported candidates lost, revealing weakness. I still don’t think he can win, but the prospects are tantalizing. I guarantee that if DeSantis wins, Trump takes his marbles and runs third party just to spite the Republican Party. Enough ultra MAGA’s go with him to guarantee a Democratic victory. And lower down ticket it is going to be a mess. Does a candidate support DeSantis or do ledge loyalty to Trump to keep the fringe? It would be so appropriate if TFG ended up destroying the Republican Party, as they had been warned of so many times.

If the Democrats insist on Biden again in 2024 I think DeSantis is a much more difficult opponent than Trump. I think Biden defeats Trump easily but Biden running in a recession against DeSantis? That's a 1984 Reagan sized win. But if you're right and Trump runs as a independent all bets are off.

Insist? Biden just led the Party to a most unexpected victory! Nobody can challenge him now. Assuming his health holds out and he still wants the job, it's his.

You and I usually agree on a lot of things but I have to differ her. Lead? He mostly just got out of the way - he didn’t do a lot of campaigning or stumping for candidates that I can remember, especially in toss up districts. And I am someone who likes Biden.

Yeah almost every campaign elbowed Biden out and he is still deeply unpopular. In contrast, campaigns welcomed Obama where possible. It was pretty well reported as such at least. The exit polls were really, really bad for Biden. It actually invites an uncomfortable conversation for 2024.

It's also way too early to know how this is going to shake out. The early night Florida scare aside there were a lot of surprises that need to be processed through.

Where the war for Trump/DeSantis goes - this is still a no win situation for the GOP (and all of us). The establishment lining up with DeSantis gives Trump a club to beat the bushes to get the base whipped up. The GOP has been prepared to think this whole mid-term was rigged. Especially with all the tight races. I expect that'll be the go to turn. So it is great and all to see the infighting because conventional wisdom says it'll weaken them all but it also could lead to more chaos and political violence.

Given how much the GOP has been emulating Putin, Trump might just slip and fall out of a window before that happens.

Oh, he'll run again alright. He is already blaming the election denier candidates rather than his endorsements. He got the second most votes of any candidate in history and he will continue the grift until he keels over.

His endorsements were "We have 80 wins and 4 losses" and here I am thinking even as the GOP may control both houses the election deniers lost and I feel safe for the next two years, at least today.
