South Korea with the Extra Time Goal to get through to the knockout stages. Wow.

I was able to switch over to the Uruguay/Ghana match and see the news spread too.

Sucks to not have control over your own destiny when you're winning 2-0.

Maybe Uruguay should have scored in the tournament before their last game.

Not that I have any sympathy for Uruguay after how some of their players confronted the referee after the final whistle.

I have no real love for the Swiss, but I was very happy to see them beat Serbia today and knock Serbia out of the tournament. Ever since the collapse of Yugoslavia and the horrible, genocidal shit the Serbs were engaged in, they’ve always been on my list of countries not to root for. And to watch them get frustrated and get chippy with the Swiss players (and the ref) once they realized they were on the way out . . . Good riddance!

To answer anyone who has the same question as me after seeing that, the answer is: "heat related deaths". Which seems obvious now, but until I read the article, I kept seeing that number thrown out and wondering "but...but...HOW?! That many slips and falls on construction sites?!?" Nay.

Bummed about the U.S. exist today, but, like everyone else seems to be, optimistic about the future for the USMNT.

And, the silver lining: Now I can unabashedly root for England! :)

Looks like they will have a tilt with Brazil in the next round.

England? No, if they get past Senegal tomorrow (hopeful), they'll face the winner of France v. Poland in the Quarterfinals. The first time England could meet Brazil is in the Finals. They're on different sides of the bracket.

Sure is. But not that much of a relief since they still have to face France. Watching Mbape and the French side today, I'm not all that confident in England's chances. Mbape is special.

Tough way for Japan to go out this morning. I really thought they had some good opportunities during OT, but their PKs seemed especially weak to me. Think the moment just got to them?

I'm sure the English can commiserate with their historic penalty futility.

Some really poor PKs. I think the stutter step is used too much.

This was a big match up for our household which is 1/4 Croatian and 1/4 Japanese. (Also 1/4 English so we have some experience with good news/bad news games after 2018)

Looking like Brazil next for Croatia which is going to be a heck of a challenge. Brazil in top form in the first half against Korea.

Dunno if anyone watched the NCAA Women's Championship (College Cup) last night, but it was amazing. High level soccer and extremely dramatic.

The first time a team has come from 2-nil to win, and did it with both goals after the 80 minute mark (and there's no stoppage time in College). Game tying goal came with 16 seconds left, and winner in 2nd OT period with less than 4 minutes remaining.

That was a hell of a finish, from 100' onward. And I say that not only because half my family is Croatian.

It drives me nuts that Fox's World Cup highlights on YouTube are only five minutes long (presumably this a contractual obligation - they are literally between 4:55-5:00 each). It's not enough nearly time for the build-up, replays, and commentator analysis. For comparison, NBC's highlight reels for Premier League games are usually 12-15 minutes, occasionally longer when the game warrants it.

Love the last minute equalizer from the Netherlands, but rooting for Argentina here. Both for Messi, and because I'd like to have one non European team in the semis.

Which also could be Morocco tomorrow, but I'm assuming that Portugal will win.

I picked a helluva day to sit down and watch the World Cup for the first time.
And in banks across the world
Christians, Moslems, Hindus, Jews
And every other race, creed, colour, tint or hue
Get down on their knees and pray
The raccoon and the groundhog neatly
Make up bags of change
But the monkey in the corner
Well he's slowly drifting out of range
