Re: Winter 2022-23 is coming
Broke out the snow shovel for the first time this year -- Jan 25 beats the old record of Jan 15 for the latest I've ever done so.
More is expected Sunday.
I'm still hoping I can continue to manage without a snowblower until my son grows into the role (when I was his age, that was a primary income stream!)

That's way more than the couple of inches we got today...more than we had all year.

Re: Winter 2022-23 is coming
We've still only had 6" or so all year, and that was in small increments. I haven't even used the shovel, never mind the snowblower. Right now it's raining (again) and the temperature is creeping up to a forecast high of 52 for tomorrow. In New England, in January. We've had 21 precipitation days out of 25 so far this month.

We've been in a similar weather pattern.Kraken wrote: ↑Wed Jan 25, 2023 10:29 pm We've still only had 6" or so all year, and that was in small increments. 1/2 inch of sleet, 21 degrees and a day to go of the same.

No snow here in the Portland Metro area, but it sure is cold for these parts. Yesterday woke up to 29 degrees, and today it was 24 and tomorrow morning is supposed to be 26. That's approaching Boston weather!

Out of curiosity, what are your electricity rates? We ballooned to 24 cents per kw here with Eversource in Connecticut, just for the supply charge. Another 12 cents for delivery.
I’m ready to move from here but don’t know where to go.

That's kind of annoying seeing as how we were in FL visiting my family in Jacksonville over Christmas, and your temps were in the 30s and 40s. Not what we were expecting!

According to my wife, who takes care of the bills, it is 8 cents per kwh for the first 1000 kwh, then 9 cents.

Christmas was the worse cold snap we've had this winter. Very unusual to get it that early.

Still 21 degrees out and it's raining like crazy. Good thing I had groceries delivered this morning.

Forecast tonight is -7. This morning was pretty busy, it seems a lot of people don't want their little darlings walking to school when it's cold. I expect even more so tomorrow.

Looks like we're going to get a brief Arctic blast on Saturday. Otherwise, it's 30s and 40s all the way with no precipitation to speak of. Which is good since we're already setting record high heating bills despite relatively mild weather. Thanks, Putin.

Re: Winter 2022-23 is coming
Another round of freezing rain will move in tonight and Tuesday, and again Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Accumulating ice is likely to continue overnight across much of North and Central Texas with worsening road conditions through Wednesday. There will be periodic breaks with the precipitation, so it will not be continuous.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

The temperature at my level is 21 degrees. The temperature at 1000 feet or more is above freezing. That's you you get freezing rain and ice buildup.

Yup, just saw on the national news that temps are really going down in the northeast too. Minus six in Boston with a wind chill of twenty-nine below.

Re: Winter 2022-23 is coming
My car radio said -40 windchill, but you know how meteorologists like to one-up each other. 40 mph wind gusts in below-zero temps are going to be frelling cold however you measure it. We'll both stay indoors all day Saturday, shoveling dollar bills into our furnace. This is just going to be a 36-hour cold snap, but it might be enough to kill off my already-tired 5-year-old car battery.

Our 108-year-old house has plenty of tiny holes. Let's just say that it never has stale air.

Re: Winter 2022-23 is coming
Let's just say my 65 year old house is hostile to the spread of COVID. Until this year the heating bills were small and the AC bill was tolerable. Between spending days at at home, rather than work and "wage inflation", that is no longer the case even as we've had mild a summer and winter. I'm beginning to adjust my winter thermostat down, which is easier to do as I try to stay more active and am giving off more personal heat. Of course I post this on a day where we are sub 10 and that outdoor walk isn't going to happen today.

It's proper winter here today: -26C with a wind chill of -41C. -40 is, of course, the point where it doesn't matter whether you're using Celsius or Freedom units.

Re: Winter 2022-23 is coming
We just got our latest blast of winter. Right around noon the early morning clouds had cleared away and we were approaching 80F. Then the front hit, the wind started gusting, the rain started up and in the next two hours the temp dropped almost twenty degrees. Luckily we aren't forecasted to get too cold tonight, just 58F, but tomorrow will be windy again with the temps barely reaching seventy.
I'm bummed because I've been in the pool each day this week as the solar heater was finally getting the temp back up. Yesterday in fact it got to 81F. Now I'll be back waiting for the sunshine and the wind to drop. Ah, first Florida problems!

Re: Winter 2022-23 is coming
January was our fourth-warmest on record (150 years). Tomorrow could be the coldest day in 40 years. It's a blast from the past.
The wind is quite unpleasant today, but the temp is still a balmy 20 degrees. It could fall another 30 degrees overnight.

I'm about to curse things, but if this February spring continues, I'ma start doing spring yard maintenance, hacking back trees and shrugs and maybe even start working on maintenance on the garage. I don't remember ever hitting the 50s in February much less flirting with the 60s around here. I start my walks with a sweatjacket and half way through am wearing it around my waist. In February.

Re: Winter 2022-23 is coming
My bedroom heater died during the night last night. Heard it shut off and smelled a terrible burned metal smell. It would not show any life today when I got up. So both them are dead now. Had them years. Me and my wife got them. I had to roll the bigger one from the living room to this pc / bedroom. Guess I can make do without one in there until next winter. Ill have to buy one though when I was hoping to have some money. Not sure when the best time of year to buy one is..summer or wait until cold weather and hope theres a sale.
These were only like $15 or $16 or $18..cant recall which it was. But were the cheapest and felt the best when I tested them. Put out good heat with a good little fan. Looking at Walmart online I dont see the exact looking one but one very close and perhaps by the same company for $25. I knew they weren't as cheap as they were. Shame. Usually small cheap ones dont put out much heat like these did. I knew this one wouldn't make it to next winter but was hoping it would last me this season. Oh well.

It's gone multiple personalities here. Two weeks ago it was April. This week it was late February. Next week so far look like March.
Still I'll take it. Last week inclusive, this has been the most mild February I think I've ever seen. Farmers gonna hate it, I think. No heavy snow and no March thaw suggests to me early planting/growing season is not going to go well. At least I live in temperate swamp, so drought is not a thing.

Re: Winter 2022-23 is coming
Our January was the warmest on record. The brief but intense cold snap that started February will probably prevent it from setting a record, but it's been quite mild. And we've had a grand total of 8" of snow all year. 'Course, that can still change...but there's no indication that it will.LordMortis wrote: ↑Sun Feb 19, 2023 7:40 amIt's gone multiple personalities here. Two weeks ago it was April.
