I just listened to an interview on the Brain Science Podcast with Sander Van Der Linden who has been researching how misinformation and conspiracies spread from a social psychology point of view. If you really want to hear more about that, you could listen to the podcast or find his book somewhere.
The fun part, though, is that he created some video games demonstrating the process, and apparently there is some evidence that people who've played them develop a little better sense of how misinformation works and how to recognize it.
They're fairly short. I tried two of the three. You can try them yourself if you'd like.

Re: Misinformation Theory
When I was in the service they made us take a class on how rumors and such change. Someone would get a statement and tell it to someone else who would tell it to some else and so forth. By it got to the last person the statement had changed so much as to be unrecognizable.
It was very entertaining and taught us all a valuable lesson.

The Telephone Game
We had this taught to us in grade school.
We all remember the game of telephone from when we were kids. Someone starts off the game by whispering a simple phrase into the next person's ear, and it gets passed down a chain of people as one repeats and whispers that phrase into the ear of the next person.
