Re: O, the weather outside is...
Read a story a couple days ago about some of the 300k who left FL last year. Net immigration is still robust, but a good fraction of those people are rethinking their decisions and some old-timers are getting fed up due to rapidly rising costs (esp. for housing and insurance, if you can get it), increasingly devastating weather (on topic!), and political polarization. The story said that car insurance is 50% higher than the national average. A friend who lives there just switched from GEICO, which raised her rate for an old RAV-4 to $800 per six months. She was preening because she bounced to Progressive for $600. I pay GEICO $325 every six months for full coverage on two cars. Her claims record is spotless, and mine isn't.

Re: O, the weather outside is...
Yes, house insurance has become really insane because of the probability of getting hurricane damage has increased so much in the state. Luckily I have the same house insurer since we built the house 40 years ago and they've been very nice about the rates which have not increased very much. We have had to have replaced the roof a couple of times but it's been reasonable. The last time we did it we got a 30-year roof so hopefully it will not be an issue for quite a while.
Car insurance of course has gone up like everything in Florida and my wife actually went and negotiated with them to fiddle to get a little bit lower rates but I don't think that's going to last for long.
Will be holding on to our house insurance for as long as we can with this carrier as we have replacement value insurance, which means anything we lose gets replaced at what it would cost now to buy a new one of them not the original price prorated.
With this new hurricane projection report from Colorado State university, I expect we will be seeing some news stories in the next few days about the possibility of more home insurers either coming into the state or leaving the state.

We had it hail on the house twice today. It was 80 degrees here yesterday and 57 degrees today.
Many areas of California are dealing with skyrocketing home insurance rates because of the threat of wildfires. But many rural homeowners with acreage have been having that problem for years.

A late-season Nor'easter made yesterday very wet and windy and is going to keep bitch-slapping us for a couple more days. They got snow in the hinterlands and I even saw traces of that here. Hoping spring will start when it moves out. It was a mild winter but I'm looking forward to griping about being hot.

Rainy turns to snowy this morning. I guess I'm not likely going outside to get steps in again. Not sure when I got so spoiled. I guess when I started conceding that I could get my steps in essentially skankin' in my basement. Whoda' thunk my late teens would come back in my early 50s in such a pathetic way? My 18 year old self would point and laugh and tell a friend.

Been away in catskill ny all week. Brought supplies to grill outside so of course it rained all week except yesterday when rain turned to snow.
Then woke this morning with multiple texts asking if we were ok. Turns out NJ got hit with a 4.8 earthquake this morning.
Thankfully our house and pup are fine. Looks like our town didn't get hit too bad.
My moms house about 8 mikes away shook as did my sons girlfriends house and job. Coincidentally she lives in upstate NY about 45 minutes west of where we were.
Heading home now though.

Got home then around 6pm or so got hit with an aftetshock that woke me up. Nothing damaged but our pupper freaked out a bit for a minute then went back to not caring pretty quickly.
Apparently thete is a 1% chance of getting 2 more over 5 in the next week and a much higher chance of 10 or so level 3 hits.
Gonna be a fun week.

Footage of the tornado that blew through St. John's county earlier this afternoon, near World Golf Village.
Early estimations based off radar values suggest this is an EF-2 tornado with max winds of 110 mph. Storm survey expected tomorrow.

Oklahoma town ravaged by second tornado in two months
The northeastern town of Barnsdall, Oklahoma (pop. 1000) suffered its second tornado strike of the year late Monday, May 6. Aerial imagery on Tuesday morning showed widespread destruction in Barnsdall, and at least one person was killed.
Located in Osage County (which is coextensive with the Osage Nation), Barnsdall had been struck on April 1 by an EF1 tornado on the Enhanced Fujita Scale that damaged several dozen structures. Monday’s twister was stronger and more destructive. The Associated Press reported that at least 30 to 40 homes were damaged or destroyed, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

I shoveled snow twice this past winter, and twice the winter before. When I was growing up, our winter income as kids was shoveling snow, usually about 3 times per week.
It's 80 degrees now and I'm in a pool of sweat after mowing the weeds (half done, beer break). Mother's Day is Sunday, the unofficial start of the safe gardening period although much has grown already.

Finally beautiful here in Portland, OR, after 10 days of near constant rain and high 40s, low 50s temps.
Lots of sunshine today and an extremely pleasant 65 degrees. Even got me off the treadmill and outside for an extended run. Of course, we appear to be getting just one day of Spring before we head right into Summer with temps in the upper 80s the next several days . . .
But I'm enjoying today!

Weather's been unremarkable here. A bit cooler than usual -- when's the last time you heard of a season being cooler than average? I'm not complaining, although I would like to turn the heat off. Still getting into the 40s at night.

Well theres tornadoes all over the place here and the surrounding areas. North Alabama, Georgia....All of TN. They just keep coming and building up. Saw 3 or 4 already confirmed tornadoes. Stuff is torn up everywhere. Nothing bad right where I am right now...most the worst seems about 50 miles south of me going from west to east.

Seems most is over here. I was not able to sleep so still up. Guess Ill just stay up.
Nothing bad until a half hour ago when the 2nd part roared through. Went from a light rain to super wind and heavy rain and lots of lightning. Blew my front screen door wide open and back and hit the house. As I was tying it securely and getting rain blew on me lightning struck really close. Bout made me jump out of my shoes. Power was out here 5 seconds..but others around my area are not so lucky..2000 without power in my county and 18,000 in the next one over.
Seems..as happens a lot when bad weather is due...that it all split north and south of me.

Northern lights could be visible across U.S. on Friday night
A strong geomagnetic storm is expected Friday night. NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a G4 (Severe) Geomagnetic Watch for the first time since 2005, meaning the northern lights, or aurora borealis, could be visible for much of the northern United States on Friday night and early Saturday morning.
It may be visible low on the horizon further south, from Southern California east across the Southern U.S.

'Extreme' solar storms cook up sweet Mother's Day auroras for Moms everywhere
Want to save all the calories from Mother's Day brunch? You may still be able to "sweeten" the holiday with a view of the ramped-up northern lights again tonight (May 12)!
Plasma from a powerful solar eruption called a coronal mass ejection (CME) slammed into Earth on Friday (May 10), sparking an intense geomagnetic storm. One of the effects was a supercharged northern lights display, which provided skywatchers in much of the U.S. and other regions around the world with absolutely mesmerizing aurora views over the weekend.
"The aurora may become visible over much of the northern half of the country, and maybe as far south as Alabama and northern California," officials with NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) wrote in a weekend update, adding that "severe and extreme" geomagnetic storms were likely again Sunday night.
And the show could continue tonight; another CME launched from the super sunspot region AR3664 is expected to approach Earth by midday. The result could be more rounds of severe to extreme geomagnetic storms — G4 to G5 on the space weather scale devised by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) — into the evening and perhaps into Monday (May 13).
"It takes an extraordinary CME to produce G5 conditions," Bill Murtagh, program coordinator for NOAA's SWPC, told Space.com in a phone interview. "We're expecting a decent impact from the CME tomorrow [Sunday]. It was just a little bit further from the limb [edge] of the sun, but still good enough that it should give us a good hit. And if everything couples right, we could certainly see the sky lit up again."

Re: O, the weather outside is...
So far, 2024 is our 11th rainiest year since reliable records began in 1857. It's rained on 16 of the past 18 weekends. It's supposed to clear this afternoon, but of course the world is too soggy to do any yard work.
