Just finished Monarch and enjoyed it although the time jumps confused the hell out of me in the beginning.
Definitely hope for Season 2.
This got great reviews, and I started watching with high expectations, and really didn’t like it. I thought it was going to be a story about Monarch tracking down Titans and figuring out how to deal with them, but it was nothing like that. The leads are supposedly young adults (one even had two children) but they act like emo teens, and I don’t really care about them and find them unlikable. Way too much angst and family/relationship drama, and too little monsters. I’m half at through and thinking about stopping wasting my time.

I read Dark Matter a couple months ago and it's a really book. That trailer looks like they're doing very book-faithful version of the story, but they gave away pretty much the whole plot in the trailer. There's still one big twist left that immediately comes to mind, but a lot of surprises that are revealed slowly in the book and blatantly stated in that trailer. Odd decision

Re-watch incoming, I guess. Severance S2 date Jan 17, 2025 announced
Severance season two will debut globally on Apple TV+ with the first episode on Jan. 17, 2025, followed by one episode every Friday through March 21, 2025. The return will mark two and a half years since the show first premiered in February 2022.

Still have a few weeks left on my Apple TV subscription I got from getting a new iPad a while ago. I started watching the new Time Bandits series and it's only helping me make up my mind that Taika Waititi is either coasting on past successes right now, or his first few successes were flukes. It's just not very good.

I redeemed the 3-month (plus a week, since they stacked it with the 1-week free trial) free subscription from Twitch today. Are there any particularly good shows/films that I should check out?

Ted Lasso (of course), Severance (absolute must see), Silo. Those are my top 3.

I would add Slow Horses to the list of shows to watch on Apple TV+. 3 seasons out now, and the 4th just about to drop. Gary Oldman is fantastic in it, but then again, when isn't he?

Yes, yes, Slow Horses is bloody amazing. Severance and Slow Horses are worth the subscription by themselves.

Also, just caught up on Time Bandits and I'm enjoying so far.

For All Mankind is fantastic and I'm really surprised it hasn't gotten more attention. Before I started watching, someone described it to me as a show that could be a prequel to The Expanse...pretty interesting description given the same realistic, gritty tone and where the story goes during season 4. The next (final?) season Canton come soon enough, but apparently it just started filming this summer.

Too many to list IMO, so will just list a few below. They have some SERIOUSLY highly rated content on there. If you are into sci-fi, from Wired magazine (and I happen to agree with them, they are the new HBO in terms of amazing new, interesting creative content):

"Around here we have a theory that Apple TV+ is the new HBO. At the same time, we also wonder among ourselves whether it’s the new Syfy. After opening with a bang in 2019 with For All Mankind, it has released a steady drumbeat of trippy, spacey, timey-wimey prestige shows, from Foundation to Severance. In early 2024, it released Constellation, an eight-part thriller about an astronaut (Noomi Rapace) who returns to Earth after a disaster in space to find things are very off. Brain-bending and tense, it’s the kind of sci-fi that sucks you in."

Ted Lasso (all seasons except the final one) is amazing (series)
Severance (series)
Black Bird (series)
Servant (m night shamalamadingdong) got great reviews, but the acting/writing killed it for me personally - very dark (literally and figuratively). (series)
Currently watching "Sunny" right now, which is great so far (series)
Coda (won all kinds of awards) (movie)
Masters of the Air gets very good reviews, but I didn't like it at all (again, writing/acting). (series)
Remake of Presumed Innocent with Jake G (series, have not watched it)
Killers of the Flower Moon (also won tons of awards) (movie)
Foundation (loved the early seasons, but it turned a little soap opery after a few - still worth it imo) (series)
Schmigadoon! I have no idea why I liked this...probably because I absolutely love and will watch anything with Keegan Michael Key in it. (series)
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (Gojiraaaaaaa, haven't watched it myself) (series)
If you like anything Peanuts, this is your place! They have a metric crap ton of old and brand new Peanuts stuff. I assume they bought the rights a while back.
Greyhound (Tom Hanks, fasntastic military thriller) (movie)
Finch (also Tom Hanks, but sci fi) (movie)
On the Rocks (movie)

Thanks for all the recommendations. I've added a bunch of them to my play list, as well as some others that looked interesting when I was browsing the catalogue. Realistically I won't make much of a dent in the list given that I don't really binge anything - I'm good for maybe an hour or two a day at most - but if there is still a lot of good stuff I want to get to come November, I might re-up the subscription.

A lot of these are movies, not shows, FWIW. Edited my list to indicate.

Should I actively avoid the final season of Ted Lasso?

my god, I'm only a handful of episodes into this show and it's lifted my heart, and that's not a small task these days.

IIRC it was a contentious issue around these parts, with someone pretty upset with my take on that. Watch it, obviously, YMMV, but for me personally, it was just another example of a beloved show turning into something completely different in its last season. Maybe a case of milking a good thing too much, or "don't know how to end these great storylines" or cultural changes of the time. It felt to me like "we are contractually obligated for another season, but we are out of good ideas". Could have also been during the writer's strike? That would actually explain a lot.

‘Time Bandits’ Canceled By Apple TV+ After 1 Season
Despite the nostalgia factor and mostly favorable reviews (78% on Rotten Tomatoes), Time Bandits, created by Jemaine Clement, Iain Morris and Taika Waititi, did not attract large enough audience and was not able to crack Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming rankings.

Raad that.
Not happy but thankfully I can't remember how it ended or if it ended on a cliffhanger so it won't affect me too much.

On another note, I just finished See.
I like the idea of the show but it did seem to drag a lot.
Still can't wrap my head around how well they adapted to blindness over 500 years. I don't think it's long enough for evolution to have helped unless the virus itself took away sight and gave other abilities like echo location which a lot seemed to have.
Even the fighting seemed too easy but over time it seemed like there were people a lot better at it and there were plenty of near misses so it wasn't a sure thing.
Spoiler:
The sighted group of Jerermerel bothered me a lot. Yes they didn't have many people in the first compound but they showed at least one other group and both groups had modern firearms. I don't see how they couldn't have held off Edo Vass, or anyone else, if they wanted to. ESPECIALLY since their first compound looked like it was only accessible by bridge which gives them a perfect choke point.heck, they probably could have taken over at some point.

I'm also not a fan of the queens arm knives. I know everyone is being but surely someone would have felt them by now.
Also, I dint see how they would have ever left her alone enough. She should have had multiple guards on her.
Also, also, her killing Paris made ZERO sense to me. She was the main person helping her own baby. Seems short sighted and she gained nothing except angering her enemies even more.
Overall I liked. They could always have a spin off but it at least ended without a major cliffhanger.

Yes! My wife and I really like the show too. And I like that Vince's detective is a pretty good guy. Abrasive, sure, but he has a good heart and isn't tortured by alcoholism or anything like that. The sardonic humor is also right up our alley.

So I got three months free about to expire if I don't activate it. Assuming they don't demand payment info to take my free three months, I'll be signing up. What should I load up and watch for three months? Keeping in mind I've never had such things before. Gimme a bunch of recommendations.

Edit NVM I see like five posts above me the exact same question.

Severance

Then watch Severance.

Finally, round things out by watching Severance.

Honorable mention to Ted Lasso, which is a close second to Severance.

Silo’s good too.

But yeah….Severance.

Ya know, I’ve been meaning to watch that after listening to a great review of it on NPR. The whole concept of “how do you fire a secret agent?” seems intriguing.

But watch Severance first. :D

Slow Horses has been mentioned.

edit: oops, pisser of carpets beat me to it.

Foundation I like, but the last season really jumped the shark for me. Although if you go into it expecting a faithful adaptation of the source material, you're going to think it jumped the shark after the first 10 minutes of the first episode. If they'd named it something other than Foundation and claimed it was based on Asimov's book, it would have been better received, methinks.

Ted Lasso would be the first thing I'd watch. It's funny and uplifting and wonderfully written.
Silo is pretty good.
Bad Monkey has been quite good (though you have to like Vince Vaughn).
Masters of the Air is highly recommended if you liked shows like Band of Brothers or The Pacific
Hijack was pretty good. Not fantastic but pretty good.
