I suffered through TRAP last night, and my God I feel like M. Night Shyamalan personally came to my house, slapped me in the face, and called me an idiot in front of my wife and kids. His utter disdain for the audience's intelligence in this film is almost unbelievable.

Disclaimer - I'm not an M. Night hater. I think he's made one, possibly two excellent films, a few very good films, and some very bad films. This is one of the latter.

This is not a "check your brain at the door, ha ha" movie. This is a "remove your brain from your skull, smash it with a hammer, and then completely forget how reality works" film. You will be asked to believe in multiple insane coincidences, decisions that absolutely nobody in their right mind would make, circumstances that would make zero sense in real life, and the idea that everybody in the world is being the absolute worst at their job on the exact same day.

My kids enjoyed it, but they're not yet old enough to realize that none of this movie made any sense whatsoever.

Overall it doesn't work. But I have to admit to thinking Josh Hartnett did a good job with what he was given. He was the only thing in that movie that actually made sense/was fun to watch. At the end, they were dropping plot inconsistencies like they were hot plates though.

M. Night writes stories that should be 30 minutes each. Tops. He can't handle long form storytelling for shit.

Also, that he's giving both his daughters film opportunities/singing careers (which they both really, really suck at) annoys the crap out of me. I hate that level of blatant nepotism.

I agree, Josh Hartnett really salvaged the only glimmer of positivity in the movie. I won't call him a saving grace because he could not save it for me, but he at least made it watchable.

Just watched Gemini Man, the movie where Will Smith faces off against his younger cloned self. And man.... that de-aging just isn't there yet. What you get is just a creepy fascimile that doesn't allow for emotions or facial expressions, and when they do try to inject facial expressions into it towards the end, it just looks and feels so fake.

I watched it in a hotel room while on a business trip and immediately prayed the people at the front desk weren't aware that I watched it. I was hoping they thought I watched porn or something else more intelligent instead.

I think the best part in the movie is the motorcycle chase. Everything else about it is just not good.

I recently watched Jaws on Netflix. I've seen various scenes from the Jaws movies, but I don't remember ever watching Jaws from beginning to end, so I consider this my first viewing.

And wow, is it ever good! There's something timeless about Steven Spielberg's movies.

The one complaint I have is that I was annoyed by Quint's endless shouting and singing. But his monologue about his past experience with sharks was fantastic; I wish they made a movie inspired by that alone.

It's a surprisingly brutal and gory movie for its PG rating. The last kill the shark made is especially harrowing; I can't help but replay it in my mind.

See if you can find Duel to stream. It was Spielberg’s first real movie, I believe. And you can see where he figured out how Jaws should work.

Nic Cage vs Jaws though. Sounds like an improv prompt.

I liked it as well. But I went ahead knowing it wasn't a "war movie". That being said, I have a coworker who sees it as a political film and she absolutely hates it. That she saw her "side" in the film as the villains should be a warning to her though.
Yeah. The movie goes as far as possible to avoid assigning an ideology to anyone we see fighting (which is probably the point of the fanciful Texas/California alliance), but it does present callous Americans willing to do callous and vicious violence.

If you feel like the callousness is calling you out, well...
Yeah, that alliance felt really forced and unrealistic and it stands out more with not explaining what's going on.
Also, unless I missed it, how did they even get from there to the White House?

Watched High Road to China with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. Not a great movie but a good one. Ive often thought of it over the years since seeing it the first time. Its an 83 movie so I was 14 but I dont recall it in theaters. I think I rented it years later. Honestly it felt like a tv movie.

My buddy and I jokingly call Tubi "The Streaming Service of Requirement." It's like the Room of Requirement from Harry Potter, but instead of tangible things it serves up the movies you need and can't find anywhere else.

Shaun of the Dead. I finally saw this. And after all of the hype and great things I heard about it I was disappointed. I didn't like it at all. His dead beat friend was just annoying. Their accents made it difficult to understand. Their entire reaction to everything around them annoyed me. I mean why would they act like that? I suppose it was to be funny but I think I smiled twice during the whole movie. I just didn't like it.

And because it was so bad ive now marked off seeing The World's End.

Family went to see The Wild Robot over the weekend. The kids have all read the books, and we've been looking forward to it since it first came out. While there are some differences from the books, in particular there are new characters and missing characters, it kept closely to the spirit of the first book. A good one for kids (and adults who have not completely shut their emotions down).

I've actually only seen parts of Iron Giant, but I think Wild Robot skews more goofy than what I remember of Iron Giant. It still has some emotional depth and sacrifices, but it also has a family of possums who, when they play dead, announce what they died from ("I have sepsis!").

Wow. That is surprising. I just re-watched it recently. I thought it held up very well. Still brilliantly done. There are so many little subtle touches. The dialogue alone was worth the price of admission.

I will say that I was a lot less impressed with The World's End. But Hot Fuzz was also brilliant.

An appt description, I think. Tubi has lots of older stuff not found anywhere else. :D It often feels like browsing an old video rental store. It's the only service I've come across that feels this way.

I’ll have to check Tubi out.

I've been on a classic movie run and trying to dedicate some time watching old movies I’ve never seen. Many times I’m with a group of people and they say, “wow, you’ve never seen… “.

I grab what I can from the library’s Blue-Ray collection because the amount of extra material and commentary interests me the most.

My wife and I just finished Seven Samurai last night and I’m ready to dig into the extras disc today. I also watched Cool Hand Luke and Ghandi for the first time last week.

I've been on a Turner Classic Movies kick this week. I just finished Point Blank (1967), which I consider to be one of Lee Marvin's best films.

I've also queued up recordings for a few classic monster films from their Halloween lineup: Dracula, The Wolfman, Frankenstein, and Bride of Frankenstein.

I watched The Breakfast Club last night. I think its the only John Hughes film from the 80s I didn't watch. Saw all the others. Not sure if I would have enjoyed it more as a teen or something but I found it alright. Kinda dragged as its in one room really. But I liked it. Didn't hate it.
