Forest Whitaker is:
Spoiler:
Saw Gerrera
The warrior — seen in the Rogue One trailer asking, “If you continue to fight, what will you become?” — was actually first seen in season 5 of The Clone Wars animated series, when he was a young man on the planet Onderon, unleashing guerilla combat on the droid army of Separatists who took over his world.

You figure that they'll release the Director's Cut on Blu Ray eventually, right? Unless the Disney execs worry that everyone would think it was better.

Vader is Star Wars. He is the ultimate movie villain and iconic to the brand. I read an article recently that I'll try and find to link. Basically the premise was that Vader is the biggest cash cow for SW. He is the only character to appear in every movie in some form(albeit just his helmet In the last one which still made it into the marketing). Other characters come and go and the actors age. Vader is eternal. They mentioned Bubba Fett to. He was a side character of little meaning but they released his action figure prior to the movie and everyone went bananas over him. They have been building him up ever since (he is an awesome bit of character design). Vader being in this movie means a truck load of extra merchandising, even if it is only a cameo.

Vader has certainly captivated my daughter (just shy of 7). We've been watching Star Wars: Rebels together, and she keeps insisting on watching the episode with Vader in it.

Odd.
I seem to recall C3PO and R2D2 in all 7 movies. :pop:

Latest news I heard was that Vader was going to be in it more than a cameo, that he'd have a bigger role. Makes me wonder if that's what the reshooting was all about. Maybe Disney weren't happy with the small cameo.

My understanding of the buzz is that the director (Gareth Edwards) basically made a war movie set in the Star Wars universe. Which sounds awesome to me, but that the studio viewed it as "too dark" for a Star Wars movie (where most of the battle scenes are people firing blasters and missing and whatnot).

Darth Vader is in
Yesterday, we found out for sure that Darth Vader is coming back for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Now we know he has his voice back.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that 85 year-old James Earl Jones will be reprising his role as the most ominous voice in the galaxy.

Meanwhile, the now 80 year-old David Prowse will not be returning as the man inside the suit - instead he's replaced, to use EW's words, by "a variety of large-framed performers".

My memory is that Chewbacca was in all of the movies but my memory of 1,2, and 3 is fuzzy at best.

Also way back when before Jedi came out and the rumors were of nine movies, Lucas had said Star Wars was the tale of the droids. But he has also been a pathological changer of all things Star Wars.

Yeah, from what I remember, a small cameo during the scenes on Kaskyyyk.

No John Williams on the spin-offs:
When the first spinoff movie drops on December 16, 2016, however, you may be in for a shock, as John Williams will not score Star Wars: Rogue One.
...
But as revealed on an episode of French radio program, Radio Classique’s Culture Club, Alexandre Desplat will handle the score for director Gareth Edwards’ (Godzilla) upcoming turn around that far, far away galaxy.
...
There has been talk for a while that the 83-year-old composer will continue to score the Episode movies, like The Force Awakens, but leave the standalone movies to franchise newcomers. If nothing else, this will be one way to truly establish these films as their own unique entity, as something different within the larger Star Wars framework.
...
[Alexandre Desplat is] very, very talented in his own right, and has worked on tons of high profile films, including both parts of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Zero Dark Thirty, and Unbroken, among many others. Just recently, he won an Academy Award for his work on Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, in a category where he actually competed against himself. His score for the Benedict Cumberbatch-starring The Imitation Game was also nominated. The guy had a solid year.

Thats fine by me. I love Williams and for the normal Star Wars movies he is perfect. But hearing his stuff to me its Star Wars...the Luke Leia Han Star Wars. I think a fresh sound for the stand alones is the right way to go.

That looks about 110% awesome.

If the trailer reflects the movie, it could be the kind of fill-in-the-rebellion story I've been waiting for since about 1978.

Man, I hope this movie is great. It certainly looks like it could be great. The shots in this are incredible - I love the shots of the AT-ATs and the Star Destroyer - they just make the universe feel so real somehow.

I mainly worry that the studio is going to tinker with this too much to try to shoehorn in some levity.

Also, Forrest Whittaker is the goddamn man.
