Daehawk wrote:Rip didn't you play the first two Merc games? Mechwarrior 2 Mercenaries and Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries. Both were great.
Played them all, I even played the game before it came to computers.
Ahh... A late bloomer I see...
I was playing even before it WAS BattleTech..
I think I still have parts of this somewhere... It came with 2 AWESOME mini's.. 2 plastic, articulated mechs.. I think they were about 2 inches tall (plus plenty of cardboard ones)
At MechCon tonight, developer Piranha Games announced that MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries will release in December 2018.
It was also announced that the game will have full mod support integrated with the Steam Workshop and up to four-player co-op.
It's been 17 years since MechWarrior 4, making this one hotly anticipated. Piranha told us that MechWarrior Online fans have been waiting for a campaign experience, and that they want this game to fill that role.
In the campaign, you will take command of a mercenary crew, picking randomized missions across different planets while also following a main quest line as you improve your team.

In BattleTech / MechForce (Amiga) jumpjets made you travel slow terrain faster, spot enemies out of line of sight and charge on top of other Mechs. It was useful there.
MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is deeply obsessed with the fantasy of piloting a giant 100-ton suit of mechanized armor. It doesn't just revel in the blistering thuds as volleys of short-range missiles catch your shoulder, but all the little minutiae that makes MechWarrior a universe you want to submerge yourself in. Each mission kicks off with a lengthy scene as your mech is slowly brought online and prepared for battle. It's a contemplative prelude to the chaos that will erupt the moment I step out from my dropship and onto the battlefield. I love it.
It's that fantasy that draws hundreds of people to Vancouver each year for Piranha Games annual MechCon. It's a celebration of everything mech, with the tabletop game, MechWarrior Online, and sister games like Harebrained Scheme's BattleTech coming together under one roof. While the main event of MechCon is usually the world championship MechWarrior Online tournament, this year Piranha is also showing off a playable demo of MechWarrior 5. It's a significantly more fleshed out build than what I played back in June, and it's a ton of fun.
I love how they gave the guy in the video almost unlimited ammo (999 shots for the AC/20?) and what looks like infinite armor, yet he still almost got killed walking away from a bunch of mechs shooting him in the back.

20 minutes of game play. The player who is our view doesn't seem that good even with the fancy hardware set up. Misses so much with beams.

I dunno. He did okay. He didn't seem mystified by the game mechanics. The things that stood out to me were a lack of torso-twisting (though you saw it on everything else, his Mech looked like he locked it so it wouldn't twist) and that plunging through 10-story buildings didn't slow or damage his Mech at all. I like destruction, but I prefer to have it spiced with a little consequence.
IIRC, though, in previous games you'd just run into an obstruction and suffer no harm - so I guess I'm nitpicking. The gold isn't shiny enough.
I look forward to playing and think it's cool that it can be multiplayer. I hope there are single-player only options, or it won't be for me.

I'd love to see what was in the upper right of the screen during the battles, but apparently it was more important that I be able to see some guy staring at a screen for the entire time. </rant>

You could watch the upper-right corner of the screen shown in the upper-right corner of the screen...

Heh, probably the fancy hardware setup is what makes him miss so much. If I had to aim that precisely with two joysticks, I'd miss all the time too.

I found myself thinking, "SWEEP THE LEG, JOHNNY! That's some good salvage, there!" Been playing too much BattleTech, I suppose.

I still fire up Mech Warrior Online and play a few hours every month or so.

I like the narrative in that video - "Save the farm!"
OK, so we only smashed like 60% of your structures and scorched or trampled nearly all of your crops, mission accomplished?

This made me laugh. My thought was, "Man, if that's corn out there, I hope they brought some butter and a movie, because that entire field is about to be poppin' soon..."

Discussing random level generation, and balancing it so it doesn't destroy players.
It has been officially announced that Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries will now be releasing on December 10th 2019 exclusively on the Epic Games Store.
Community Pre-order pilots will be able to access the Closed Beta to access practice missions in November, prior to the game’s full launch.
Our partnership with Epic Games store allows us the opportunity to make sure MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries meets our internal goal of creating the best MechWarrior game possible.
Fans looking to obtain refunds from their pre-order of any tier are able to do so by September 1st. Pre-order refunds of any tier will be refunded in full. Additionally, those seeking refunds will be able to keep all bonus MechWarrior Online content from the Standard, Collector and Ultimate Editions of the pre-order, which amount to $100, $180, and $300 dollars worth of in-game currency and content for MechWarrior Online including all bonus items like XP, premium time, badges, decals, cockpit items and more, depending on which pre-order tier purchased.
However, refunded pre-orders will forfeit their access to the full game and be unable to participate in the upcoming closed beta for MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, now scheduled for November as well as lose the exclusive MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries DLC items.

It's disappointing to be sure. I'm pretty suspicious of the epic store with its Chinese ties (and bitter about Phoenix Point going there, which reminds me, is that ever coming out? That'd make the second kickstarter I backed that came out with no product at all), but, let's be honest, all my personal info has probably leaked out already (at least two credit checks were done on me using Equifax in the last two decades, so I'm basically hosed as far as personal info security goes). I don't have a dog in the race since I skipped the pre-order, and this gives me a good excuse to wait a year for a couple of patches and DLC (if actual content) to polish the experience up. We'll see how long I can hold out once it actually comes out, Mechwarrior is on my list of "weak spots" (along with X-Com and Descent: Freespace).

It doesn't matter to me. I'm still getting Ubi games off of Uplay, EA from Origin, older games from GoG, various games on Steam, Bethesda games on Bethesda. I don't have any issue with Epic, and still hope it forces Valve to up their game a little.

When I got a game ...same. I use each service to play the stuff I used to get. Well when I did play the stuff I used to get.

I've never really liked Epic as a company (serial dickhead Cliff Bleszinski probably has something to do with that), their aggressive tactics to get some marketshare are annoying, and feature-wise the Epic Store is light years behind Steam. That said, if you're a gamer that enjoys free stuff, EGS gives away a lot of not terrible games you just have to click to add to your account.
All that to say: yeah, once you give in and install it, it's a slight inconvenience that gives you free things.

Yeah, Clff Bleszinski is annoying.
I find the exclusives annoying, too, but to be honest, I don't think there was any other avenue they could have pursued to seriously compete with Steam. Valve has the market so locked down that there aren't many openings.
Hopefully they'll catch up on the features. Steam really is light years ahead, but they've also got a ~15 year head start.
