Re: Whatcha drinking?
Most NEIPAs are unfiltered and therefore cloudy, but filtering one doesn't make it into something else. The defining characteristic is using fruity, juicy hops such as Citra. This particular beer had a very faint haze, not quite transparent.

Re: Whatcha drinking?
Some brewers would argue that filtering does make it into something else, apparently. I've just been doing some searching on non-hazy IPAs that also would qualify as NE or juicy, and there do appear to be a few out there, but they're very rare.
FWIW, Beer Advocate indicates that Stardust is an American IPA, not an NEIPA. The reviews seems to concur, noting specifically how it is a nice contrast to many of the NE/hazy/juicy IPAs out there.

Re: Whatcha drinking?
With wine you can have filtered or unfiltered without changing the type of wine. I assume the same with beer. I would also assume however that the wine/beer would have differing aspects and would age differently because of that, not that you age beer.

Re: Whatcha drinking?
Can you have a filtered hefeweizen? Isn't part of the definition of hefeweizen that it is unfiltered? Filtering it would likely change both the taste and mouthfeel, making it a different kind of beer.

Re: Whatcha drinking?
My bad, then. I called it a NEIPA because that's what Lamplighter (in Cambridge MA) mostly brews. It was a pretty average beer, anyway, and not one I'll buy again.ImLawBoy wrote: ↑Fri Jan 29, 2021 3:55 pm FWIW, Beer Advocate indicates that Stardust is an American IPA, not an NEIPA. Would recommend. Pretty smooth, slightly sweet - definitely benefits from whatever magic occurs after slapping it in the rum cask.

Saw this vodka in the store yesterday. The gun bottle was almost as long as my arm. Wanted over $200 for it hehaha. I chuckled and kept walking.

What whiskey is it that is super sweet?. I mean cough medicine sweet. I got some in the 90s and it was like syrup and knocked me on my butt. Ive thought all these years it was Southern Comfort...thats the name my mind associates with it. But I got a small travel taster bottle to be sure and no..that was just plain like all whiskey.

Re: Whatcha drinking?
I've bought East by Northwest (Untold Brewing, Scituate MA) four or five times now and will keep on doing it. It strikes a nice balance of bitter, piney west coast IPA with a touch of haze and juice, probably from the Mosaic hops. This is one that NEIPA fans and traditionalists should be able to agree on.

Southern Comfort is a whisky liqueur. I don't think you'll find a straight whisky that is sweeter than it.Daehawk wrote: ↑Fri Feb 05, 2021 12:46 am What whiskey is it that is super sweet?. Ive heard that name but dont think so. My mind is still saying Southern Comfort. The travel bottle seemed like normal whisky . The memory of the old one was as if it had 5 cups of sugar in it. I drank too much and it hit me really hard. I remember thinking Id have to watch that stuff if I ever got it again...but never got it again. Maybe it was a sub type of it and they dont make that one now or something.

I always associated sweet whisky with SoCo and Jim Beam, but it's been ages since I've had either of them, so I can't really confirm.

Re: Whatcha drinking?
There's Stillhouse flavoured Whiskey. I've had the Chocolate Mint and Spiced Cherry versions, and if left too long in the container, they get too sweet. It's like the alcohol evaporates over time and leaves the sugar.

Re: Whatcha drinking?
Southern Host is the generic version of Southern Comfort but it is 100 proof.
I drank a pint of that with three friends in Grade 12 and then we thought it was a good idea to drink a fifth of it afterwards.
We went to buy some weed and I got kicked out of the weed guy's house because he raised Shar Peis and they were cracking me the fuck up. I kept tugging on their extra skin and trying to wrassle with them.
Then my friends made me go home but I remember getting kicked out of a porno shop on the way.
Maybe you drank Southern Host?

Re: Whatcha drinking?
I've never consumed a whisky and immediately thought, "oh wow, that's really sweet". Instead, I'm overwhelmed with the wkisky-ness and then eventually pick up on the other random flavors that are part of however it was made or whatever magic happened in the barrel. I'm hard pressed to imagine any whisky where that's your first impression. I will bet my life you had a Drambuie mini.
I guess it's Rusty Nails tonight, so thanks for that.
Also, by tonight, I mean right now.

Re: Whatcha drinking?
I've never considered Southern Comfort whiskey. The sweetness was appealing to my teenage palate (definitely a gateway booze). Like all sweet liquors; get sick on it once and that's it. I can't drink brandy either, nor other cordials, schnapps, or the like. A neighbor was handing out tiny bottles of Fireball (cinnamon whiskey) during Trick-or-Treat, that'll stay on the top of my fridge until end of times, probably, unless some visitor is inclined to drink it.

Re: Whatcha drinking?
Jewel had my recent staple, Goose Island IPA, on sale for $12/15 but I had to buy 2. They also had a $15 rebate if I bought a 12 of Guinness products for $13 and a particular brand of corned beef, at least $15.01 in price. Which could be hard, since that brand of corned beef is also on sale by itself for 25% off. And it's rather early to be buying for Corned Beef and Cabbage Day, still 11 days off.
So I decided to treat myself to a DYO 11-pack at Binny's. Why 11? Well, one of the choices was Oscar Blues DIPA. They don't often have DIPAs in the DYO rack, and when they do they are often weaklings. This one is a respectable 8.2% and is very reminiscent of Lagunitas Lil' Somethin' Extra. Quite grapefruity (all citra hops), and having just squeezed a lemon into some food I'm cooking, the lingering smell on my hands really accentuates the citrus.
FTR, they had 2 cans in the rack, I bought them both. That's why 11. 12 beers, 11 different kinds.

Re: Whatcha drinking?
Fancy Papers Hazy IPA by Cigar City Brewing, Tampa, FL. A lot of the "beers I don't recall having before" in the DYO rack were hazy beers. The can claims hints of mango and tangerine...I get mango. The color resembles yeast-infected urine, and it has a light feel to it. Nice summer beer, I imagine. Next week might not yet be summer, but it'll be warm enough to enjoy a beer on the patio, if not around the fire pit. 6.5% ABV.

Re: Whatcha drinking?
Low alcohol session Lager, not a fan. Maybe if it was 100 degrees outside but I am not sure even then. Really citrusy and effervescent almost.
But this is a good one. Your typical tasty 7% +/- West Coast IPA.
Dust Bowl is a brewery in Central California with restaurants in Manteca off I-5 and in Monterey near Fishermans Wharf. I do highly recommend most of what I have tried from them. I have no idea how wide they distribute though.

Re: Whatcha drinking?
For the past year or more, my emergency backup beer has been Long Trail Vermont IPA. I recently switched to Otter Creek Bonus Stage, because it's a little more Vermonty. Plus, Space Invaders.
Otter Creek really stepped up their game after Long Trail bought them some years ago.

Hazy River NEIPA by New Holland Brewing Co., Holland, MI. Mosaic funk was a put-off, at only 5.9% ABV, it was suffering without reward.
Great Lake IPA by Great Lakes Brewing, Cleveland, OH. This is delicious beer. Great for summer, it goes well with the unreasonably warm late winter day. 6.5% ABV is the baseline of reasonable.

Hophazardly American IPA by Begyle Brewing Co., Chicago. I still call bullshit on the style, but like everything else I've had from this brewery, the beer is excellent. A little citrusy, a little mangoey. 7% ABV is above average for those of its ilk.

Re: Whatcha drinking?
No Brainer IPA by Victory Brewing Co., Downingtown, PA. The interesting thing about this beer is the presence of a hop variety I've not heard of before, mandarina. The label claimed notes of mandarian orange, but being blended with citra, azacca and centennial hops, the result was an undefined, muted citrus flavor. 6.8% ABV, over all it's a pleasant beer, if unremarkable.

8% ABV. Nice, big, frothy head. Yes, that's what SHE said. Love it. Mildly bitter. Thinking I like these "hazy" things. Had Dogfish Head's Hazy-O, but like this better.

Nu Juice by Southern Tier Brewing Co., Lakewood, NY. Been awhile since I had a Southern Tier beer, no fault of theirs since they've always been pretty competent. This is a flavorful beer almost reminiscent of a DIPA, but for the miserably low ABV of 6.0%. If you feel the need to pound a case of something, this is a good candidate.

In solidarity with those who are about to be snowpocalypsed, today's beer iis Mountain Standard IPA by Odell Brewing Co., Ft. Collins, CO. A little bit hazy, this urine-colored beer lacks depth of flavor (maybe being brewed in the thin air is to blame). At 6.5% ABV, it's the beer equivalent of snow run-off, something you Colorado folks are going to be very familiar with soon.

Sipping on tequila for the first time instead of just drinking it as a shooter with salt and lime. Got a big box of the little liquor bottles de-catering aircraft and finally took my stockpile home. This is Patron Silver which I believe is just a step above Jose Cuervo. I am surprised by how much I am enjoying this. For someone that is use to drinking bourbon and scotch neat, this is almost refreshing. It has fruity and citrusy aromas and flavor. It is light with little backend burn on the palate. I am shocked how much I liked it as I thought I would dump it after one sip.
